Hi B.. My son is now seven but he used to have the same problem. The doctors recommended making sure that my son was getting enough potassium like in bananas and drinking enough water. My son mostly had those problems on hot summer days when he had been out running and playing. I used to just give him some tylenol before he went to bed on those nights because i knew it was gonna happen.

Hello B.!! I just had a recent problem with my 3 year old. Come to find out she pulled a muscle. Just to let you know every ped that I talk to told me that a child should not even begin complaining about growing pains until they are at least 5 to 6 years old. I would go see your family doc. Good luck too you.

its funny i didnt know that there was such a thing as growing pains i always thought my son was doing it for attention when he said his legs hurt cuz my grandma watches him and constantly says it. if it is a real thing i always vote for motrin it fixes everything, or maybe a warm bath with epson salt, since that is a muscle relaxer, or a lotion massage.

I too heard growing pains are a myth. But every time my son hit a growing spurt, he would get restless and his legs would hurt. After a warm bath I would massage his legs, back and arms for about 30 minutes. I would give him 1/2 dose of Advil before bedtime. Also bananas will help.

If she's had more activity that day have her stretch after she's done playing.

I have a three years old with the same problem. All the doctors tell me to do is give her tylenol, motrin and massage her legs.. There is nothing they can really do about growing pains just try to get to ease up to where she can rest.
I know it just breaks your heart, mine to but thank goodness it only happens evert once in awhile now.

I've found that potassium does help some with that. Try adding extra banana to your daughter's diet. Good luck!

I had growing pains when I was a child and my 4 year old daughter has them as well. One thing my mom did for me was to give me tylenol and then take me for a ride in the car I have no idea why but it was the only way I could go to sleep also as I got older I found that putting something cold on them helped ease the pain. With my daughter I give her tylenol and massage her legs. I either lay in bed with her or we sit in the chair together and turn on the radio and I sing to her. She loves music and it is soothing to her. I also talk to her about things that she really likes both the talking and singing help get heir mind off of the pain so they can relax and that is key in getting the pain to subside. Good luck!

My grandmother always told us to stretch our legs by putting our hands against a wall & lean forward in a way that it would stretch our calves. While I was pregnant I was having a lot of pain in my legs & it really helped when I did those stretches then also.

Someone else on this network responded to a similar problem by putting a bar of Zest soap under the sheets near the foot of the bed. They said it worked! I might try that next time my 8 y.o. complains. :)

I usually have them drink more fluids (water & milk) throughout the day and do some stretching before bed. Massaging the legs at bedtime seems to help as well. Giving a bit of Children's Tylenol is a good idea.

I'm sure others will have some ideas too. Good luck and I hope it subsides soon.

I recently read that growing pains are a myth. Usually nighttime pains are caused by lots of activity during the day and the actual growing of bones and muscles has nothing to do with the pain. If this is happening nightly, I would take her to the doctor!

Lots of Fluid during the day. Bananas help big time w/ cramping. Warm bath at night followed by stretching and use some lotion to massage her legs. I would give her the new 8 hour Advil so it will last most of the night. This should all help IF it's growing pains. Those don't last forever of course...if this goes on for a while longer I would see your doc to make sure it's just growing pains (or just give them a call) They really should come and go w/ her spurts not be constant.
