My hubby and I just bought our first home and everything is up to parr, expect the lawn! We have the worst looking lawn on our street! I would love to know what weed killers work best for those ugle yellow pests that look like they are trying to take over our whole yard. Also I don't understand why our lawn is soo yellow in comparison to everyone else's, do we need to get the sprinklers going this early or do we need to fertlize?? If so what kind of fertilizer do I get?? Thanks so much!!
Get a product/fertilizer called Revive! It works wonders, I think we put it on once a month and water a lot.

They get great testimonials from users, and the product is safe for children, pets and the environment. It prevents many weeds from sprouting, and contains nitrogen, which will green-up your lawn.
I've also heard that over-seeding in the spring works well. Newly sprouted grass is green and velvety, and can really make a lawn look good. For awhile, anyway. You'll still need nitrogen, and a slow-release, natural source stays put longer, works longer, and is much less likely to pollute through run-off.

I'm not a lawn expert by all means, but I do recommend Scott's 4 Step Lawn Treatments. We've been using it for only 1 full year and it has made a huge difference in our grass. We hardly have any weeds and our grass came up beautifully green this year. It is very full and lush!
I do know that you are not supposed to let your pets and children play on it after you put it down until it has rained and the ground has had a chance to absorb it.

As for yellow grass, there are different types of grass and some are what you might call seasonal, so that they are green for part of the year and yellow during other parts of the year. If this is the case and it really bothers you, you may want different grass.
You just moved in, so you wouldn't have seen the pattern over the seasons, but you could ask your neighbors if they noticed this about the grass on your property.
In fact asking neighbors for lawn advice might be a good way to make friends. Drop a note in their mailbox if you don't see them around.
Also there is something that is a pole with a grabbing part at the end for pulling dandelions and similar deep rooted weeds out.
Scotts if you go to their website they will send you emails and tell you which fertilizer to use and when to do it for your area. love love love it.
we've got sprinklers on even though there has still been snow, it is not sticking and the grass is awake and needs nutrients and to be taken care of. we have already done our first fertilize which has a weed blocker in it.
You can fertilize. Go get the Scotts brand or IFA has a good system. I used to do it myself but now I have Scotts come and do it for me. It was better than doing it myself and it was very reasonable. I always thought it was to expensive but it wasn't. You should at least call and get a estimate and see. I have a very small sugarhouse yard and a small bag of fertilizer would last me 2 years but you should only keep it a year so I was always wasting money by throwing it away. So that is why I looked in to having them come. By the way my lawn always looked good when I fertilized but now it looks better than the block. When Scotts come they always tell me little things that I need to do like trim the lawn a little longer cause it so hot or water it a little less or more. Sometimes they will just tell me my yard looks wonderful and to keep doing what I am doing. (That is always nice to hear!)

I am a certified arborist and work for a Denver tree and lawn care company. Now is a good time to get your sprinklers up andyes fetilize and weed control is ideal now. we start our lawn fertilization in March. Some one mentioned revive which is a great product but is not a lawn fertiler but a soil conditioner. It does allow for your lawn to get the most out of your waterings. Is very ideal when watering restrictions are in place. You can go with either a quick release or slow release fertiler. One you do ore often than the other. We put a granular fertiler down and spot treat out weeks.
Fertilize! We bought a home that was in foreclosure last year and the front lawn definitely needed help. Lots of weeds, bare patches, really brown, etc. If there are too many weeds to pull by hand, I'd suggest getting a spray. They have some that you can hook to your hose that are especially for broadleaf weeds. That worked great on our dandelions. I don't know what kind of fertilizer we used. I don't know that it matters too much, but it definitely greens up your lawn quickly.
If you have any areas that you need to put grass seed over, make sure you don't use a "weed and feed" fertilizer. It only helps with weeds that are just starting to grow, not the well-established ones, and will keep any grass seed you put out from germinating.
Those are the main things we've learned. It took a while, but our lawn looked a lot better by the end of the season last year and looks even better this Spring. Good luck!

Fertilize with a weed and feed type fertilizer, and it probably needs to be aerated. Other than that, keep in mind that your lawn might be a different type of grass than your neighbors'. Ours always looks a little brown in the spring, while many others' are super green, but come mid summer's heat ours is still green, when those others' lawns are brown.
We have our sprinklers going already. We put them on after the weather warms up, and the chance for a freeze is over.
We also get our lawn aerated in the spring and fall, and fertilize in the fall. There are companies you can hire that will aerate. We fertilize ourselves. You can ask someone at Home Depot or Lowes about which fertilizer to use and how to put it down. You can also ask them about weed killers.
By far the best thing I have ever found to make a lawn nice and green is ProRich Lawn Food. It can be found at Ace Hardware. It is chicken poop and when applied about every two weeks will make your lawn a very deep green. I sound like a salesman for it but it truly turned our lawn from own of the worst on the street to one of the greenest! I use it in conjunction with the Revive granules and it works like a dream. This will make your lawn green but will not protect against weeds and insects. You will need to apply separate fertilizers for that. You can use Scotts for the weeds and Tetrycide (I think that is close to what it is called) to take care of bugs.
Probably should get those sprinklers going or at least hand water.
