ok so im 17weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and this has been the worst of the 3. im noticing that as i keep having children my sickness gets worse. well since i've been pregnant with this child i have a bad (i mean very bad) gagging problem. ive gone to my dr. with this but they say its nothing. they do a whole check up on me and saying nothings wrong. its like i have a lot of phlem or mucus in my throat and it causes me to gag. (now this part is kind of gross but its a detail that might help) when i spit out its not green or yellow its clear like saliva. and on a bad day because i gag and spit out so much i notice blood in it. yes i get nauseas from all this and the dr put me on 25mg of phenergan every 8hours but that doesnt help with my gagging problem. i just wanted to know if anyone has any idea what this could be. thanks for the help in advance.
well i went to my dr. and we talked more about whats going on and he recomended mucinex. i have yet to try it but i will today. thanks to everyone for your help

Sounds to me like one of the lovely things that happens when you are prego! I wouldn't worry...I have this sometimes too and what seems to help are Tums Smoothies the mint flavor or gum. Sometimes a peppermint will do but tums Smoothies and gum seem to help the most. Regular tums make me gag anyway but the smoothies taste like those good old fashioned peppermints. Hope that helps...Good luck with #3.

With my second I too had an over production of spit and mucus. I sometimes had to carry around a spit cup (felt like I was dipping). When I noticed some blood (not much just a hint ) it was after I had vomitted something like popcorn or anything else abrasive. The food is not meant to comeback up and causes some minor issues with your esophagus when it does. If it is really bleeding badly tell the doctor ASAP, I really like the idea of eating all the time, if you can stomach food. I found that continually spitting will reduce the gagging, because you dont have it in your mouth, so carry your cup around. Good luck and know this too will pass.

Not sure if this is along the same lines but I've been pretty sick through my pregnancy. I'm now 27 weeks and didn't have the gagging but would feel like I have a lump in my throat and then would need to vomit. As I would start it would basically be spit. Sorry trying not to be too gory. My doctor said that it sounds like my Finkter (Spelling?) muscle (the muscle that closes off the stomach to my esophagus) was not closing due to the hormones and basically we just needed to calm the stomach but I may still be sick off and on. First we tried Tums (no), then went to Maloxx (better but no) he now has me on Prilosec which surprisingly has almost completely stopped the feeling sick and gotten rid of the lump in my throat. Yours may be different but that's what has helped me. Good Luck

When I was pregnant in 2008, I produced a LOT of saliva.. I asked my Dr. what the deal is, and they said that can happen during pregnancy.. in my 6-7 month (when I could still sleep on my back) I would choke in my sleep because of it.. It actually scared me a couple of times.. It didn't get this bad for me, but my Dr. said that some of his patients have had to carry a cup to spit in because it was so bad.... I don't know if your gagging could be a result of excessive saliva, but it's a thought... Good luck with your pregnancy!!

The blood is probably due to the irritation of your throat. I get that when I have a bad problem with mucus and flegm. As to the cause of the mucus, I have no idea unless your histamine is working overtime. Keep researching that out and keep letting your doctors know. But, since they are aware of it, don't worry too much. That is more harmful. It's probably nothing. Steam up as much as you can handle to help loosen it all.

Sounds like oral hypersensitivity - are you gagging after you eat or just before your try to eat?
Are you eating dairy on a daily basis?
Two thoughts:
Get an infant toothbrush (or use your own) and rub your gums, palate and tongue in a methodical stroke, away from you, on each surface. This can 'alert' and prepare your sensory system and calm it down. Then, try eating something.
(I'm an occupational therapist, and have seen this method work for many children who can't tolerate different textures or types of foods.)
Second: Acupuncture - phlegm typically indicates an excess in your system. This symptom may be indicating that you need to shift your diet or habits in some way (that they can treat you for.) Sounds like some organ system is out of balance, if it's not your nervous system being hypersensitive..
Hope you feel better!

could it be allergies? are you better after taking the phenergan?
you might want to try yoga ( I know, when?) but if you do the stretching, relaxing and upside you might move some of that phlegm around and have less of it. Also, do you change your diet when you are pregnant? have you tried cutting out milk for a few days? My only other suggestion would be to see an ear nose and throat doctor before you give up. You still have 23 weeks and this doesn't sound like fun.

Hi, First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! I had horrible morning sickness with all four of my babies and I frequently gagged on my own saliva. When you are pregnant you have a lot more water in your body than usual, thus a lot more saliva. The only thing that helped was for me to suck on one of those hard candy peppermint discs--you know the white ones with little red stripes? Check the ingredients on the bag though--it has to have real peppermint oil, not imitation peppermint oil. Peppermint oil naturally helps to settle your stomach and sucking on the hard candy helps keep the extra saliva manageable. I know it sounds too simple to work, but I swear by it. I hope this helps! Good luck! S.

V., I have several thoughts. Could you be developing a cedar or mold allergy. They have been really bad lately. If it's clear, it sounds like drainage to me. Buy a sinus rinse system from CVS or Walgreens. They are only about $12. Do it in the morning and evening. You will feel more stuffy and have drainage to expell for about an hour after you do it, but it will subside quickly (it will really, really help!). Lastly, do you have a lot of nausea or just gagging? With my second child, I was ridiculously sick and my doctor prescribed the generic form of Zofran. I would request that if you are nauseous. Phenagren is a joke, in my opinion; it did nothing for nausea and gagging...it just made sleepy. I don't necessarily recommend taking meds but it was literally unbearable. I hope it ends for you soon. Lastly, the worst of the nausea ended in month 4. Although, I still had some problems throughout the pregnancy. I still had problems with gagging throughout the pregnancy too when doing things like brushing my tongue or stinky smells. I REALLY hope things ease up for you soon!

I noticed Sharron said something about peppermint oil. I wanted to breast feed and had a very hard time. They said absoultely no peppermint at all it makes milk harder to produce. I eat alot of peppermints all the time and my milk came in but only produced about 1/2 an oz on a good day for the entire day!!!

I second the suggestion to cut out dairy, but you will need to ensure that you are getting calcium from an alternate source. Check your prenatals...some have iron, some have calcium...but usually not both since calcium inhibits the absorption of iron.
Also, be very sure that you are getting enough fluids (water, water, water). This will help keep your secretions thin. I drank a lot of peppermint herbal tea with honey during my pregancy. It was a tastier way to get all my fluids, the peppermint helps with the nausea, and the honey soothed my raw throat.

The phlem could be alergy. Get completely off of dairy. Dairy is very mucus producing. You can use a calcium supplement. You may already be getting enough with your prenatals. Good luck.

first off, for the nausea, i would try vitamin B-6 instead of the phenergan. worked like a charm for both my pregnancies, i had horrible morning sickness (all-day sickness really!) until i started taking the added vitamin (you can take up to 70mg per day, check to see how much is in your pre-natals first)
as for the gagging and mucous, i would try cutting out dairy products and see if that helps. when your sinuses are draining due to allergies or a cold, dairy products thicken the mucous and can make you gag or cough up phlegm.

Your gagging has everything to do with your pregnancy and the raging hormones going off to support your pregnancy! I had horrible gagging sensation with my first and second pregnancy, and with my second my doctor kindly explained that it was hormones causing all this unpleasantness! It surfaced wit both around the three month mark, and stayed awhile! I used gum and mints to help cope with the issue! I hope this helps!

Try some real ginger...Whole Foods carries ginger candy 10 for .99, tea, and Jamaican Gingerale made with real ginger and grape juice. Sodas (canada dry shwepps) are made with high fructose corn syrup and absolutely no ginger. Ginger is great for nausea, and it settles the stomach. YOu may be allergic to something you are eating (wheat, dairy, corn, soy are most common). Try eliminating one of them at a time and see if you notice any difference. Try to eat organic whole foods, instead of canned processed stuff.
I hope this helps. C

Hi V., how are you? Congrats on your pregnancy! I to am pregnant with my 3rd child. Youngest just turned 1. Yeah I'm crazy! Anyhow, I was sick the whole time with him. My doctor gave me suppositories and a some pills that I could put under my tongue. Can't remember the name of them tho. It worked for me, because this went on the whole pregnancy. I also got a shot in the bottom when it got really bad.I also gagged alot. Not sure about the blood in the mucus tho. I hope your doctor will help you out with something. Or maybe you need to check into getting a dr. that may help you out better. I know how it is being miserable while pregnant. Seems with this pregnancy the sickness is back again. I'm only 6wks so I have to wait till I go for my 8wk check up. You better believe I'll be asking for the same thing.
Good Luck!

This is bile that you are spitting up and your Dr. needs to do something about this NOW. You have a reflux problem and this can turn into something bad. To start with you do not have anything in your stomach when this happens or you might have vomit instead. But the blood is a concern and he needs to know this NOW> let him know today.

You didn't mention what you eat, or how often. The only thing that saved me from morning sickness and gagging all day (which I was doing) was eating all the time. I had a fruit bar FIRST thing in the morning, I mean before I even got out of bed, and nibbled on crackers, fruit and veggie sticks throughout the day, as well as ate regular meals. I tried to keep it as healthy as possible, but endulged as well- just to make sure there was always something in my stomach. And I was thinner after I had my babies than I was before I got pregnant. I still eat throughout the day and have held a great weight. I understand that weight may not be an issue, it's the discomfort, but it was sure a bonus to get into this habit. Though I really have to watch it as I get hungry more often, so I keep granola bars in my purse. I wish you the very best of luck!!

One way to get the stuff out of the nasal system is to do a nasal wash. You could go to walgreens and get a SinuCleanse Sinus Nasal washing system. (other wise known as a neti-pot.) Doing this once to twice a day, will get the stuff out of your sinuses, and help you feel clear.
When I was pregnant, I always seem to have a runny nose, and not until this last pregnancy, did I seem to manage it well with the neti pot.
Hope this helps.

Hi V.,
I had the same problem with my first pregnancy. I never actually coughed/spit anything out, but would be out somewhere and suddenly have to run for the bathroom and hang over the sink gagging. I felt like my entire throat was clogged with mucus (gross).
With my second pregnancy, I had a similar issue. I'd be in the middle of doing something, and suddenly have to run brush my teeth (about 10 times a day). While I was brushing, I would be gagging. I think this just has something to do with hormones. With my second pregnancy, the issue didn't resolve until about 21 weeks or so. Your allergies could just be making the whole issue worse, too? Anyway, I tried to control it by taking deep breaths through my nose and telling myself over and over that I wasn't going to gag! This seemed to help a little.
Good luck with your pregnancy!

Yikes! Sounds so familiar and I'm sorry to hear that. With my first two years ago, I produced so much mucus that I had to put people on hold and gag or throw up under my desk before returning--yuck, I know. It turned out that with my immune system compromised due to the pregnancy, I was allergic to everything. I was a regular snot machine and couldn't believe how much I could still have filling my head when I had just removed an alarming amount.
With severe nausea for nine consecutive months, there was not much I could do but I found that when I could do to remedy it. I was told I could take Benedryl but did not feel comfortable doing so. Instead I steamed my head and blew as much as I could out of my nose once it was loosened up. Taking long, deep breaths and repeating a few times before bed helped me a lot. It got me a little good sleep before starting to fill up again and I was less ill in the morning from all that drainage into my stomach while I slept...tossed and turned.
My second child last year was just as bad but I found that if I was diligent about my snot removal and not swallowing any mucus, I was much less nauseated. Yes, you might make some unpleasant noises as you draw that stuff from where ever it may be lodged but it is soooooo worth it. Carry a cup or tissue or excuse yourself to the bathroom frequently but by all means, get that stuff out of you. Don't forget to wash your hands.
Good luck, sweetie!

You have reflux - get your doctor to do an upper GI. I have been having the same gagging thing. Since you are pregnant - the fetus is probably pushing your stomach up making stomach acid rise in your throat which is probably why you're seeing blood (stomach acid is the strongest acid known) - when I was carrying my daughter, who is now 26, the same thing happened to me. She was longer than I had room for. Unfortunately, I have had problems since then but I noticed it got really bad in the last year or so. I was going through some tough times - lost my dad - and just attributed my problem to nerves and tension. However, in the last two months, I have been taking medicine for it and it has stopped. I wish I could remember what I'm taking but I can't. Talk to your doctor again and stay on them until they give you some credit for knowing your own system.
