Need Dental Consult for 9 Month Old

Moms please help! My 9 month old daughters top lip attaches lower on her gum line than the average kid, and our pediatrician says it would be up to a pediatric dentist to determine if it needed to be clipped, or left alone. Does anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone else gone through this??? She drinks and eats fine, so I hadn't given it much thought, but I don't want it affecting how her teeth develop - even if this is only her baby teeth. Thanks in advance for any advice.

When my oldest was little we chose a dentist at Cardinal Glennon hospital , they ended up and put him under to fix his teeth when he was very young. Over there everything is for lil ones that's there specialty. So I would suggest Cardinal Glennon or a Childrens Hospital they all have pediatric dentists! Goood Luck

I've taken my kids to Indian Springs Dental Clinic, just over the Missouri line into Kansas. They were a little older, but had to have a lot of work done before school age, some kind of hereditary problem... Anyway, they were great with my kids there. I have recommended them to a lot of people. We were happy. You can look them up on-line. good luck.

My 2 year old son has this same issue. We went to see Dr Fales in Olathe. He said that it will likely need to be clipped around 3 or 4 years old in order to avoid a large gap between his front two teeth. Not a huge deal but something that we plan to follow up with.

I didn't get a chance to read the other responses so sorry if this is duplicate info.

We see Dr. Hemberger in Overland Park. He and his staff are wonderful and great with the kids and the office is a wonderful environment for children.

My 18month old has the same thing. My ped. didn't seem too concerned but also told me it may need to be clipped unless she accidently cuts it herself from a fall or something (gasp!)as can happen with toddlers. I would also appreciate hearing from you moms who've been in this situation. Thanks!

My children had to see a pediatric dentist for other issues. We saw 3 of them before we found one we were comfortable with (we knew both boys would need surgery). We found Dr. Barry in Parkville. It's a little bit of a drive from Raytown where we live, but every bit worth it. He is wonderful with the kids, as is his entire staff. They did the surgery at Children's Mercy and it's the first time my kids aren't scared to go to the dentist.

I think I would be tempted to ask your regular dentist for a recommendation of a good pediatric dentist in your area. Since you know it is something that is going to be taken care of eventually, I would find a good pediatric dentist and get his/her opinion of when and what needs to be done.
I had a great pediatric dentist here in Topeka, but don't know who to suggest to you in your area.
Good luck!!

J.,
I would recomend Dr. Fales in Olathe. Our 1 month old son has a cleft lip and palate and was unable to eat. Dr. Fales took an impression of his palate and made an appliance that is similar to a retainer that creates a palate so he is able to eat. He went from struggling to eat half an ounce to eating almost 5 1/2 ounces. His office is totally based on kids and them being comfortable and the staff took a genuine concern with my son and I both. Good luck!!!

I read through a few of the responses you recieved. You have some good advise. I actually had this problem when I was a kid and my parents had the "flap" clipped when I was in early grade school sometime. I don't know about doing the procedure now or waiting, but w/ me the "flap" had caused my adult front teeth to have a large gap. The dentist clipped it (probably 2nd grade or so) and the gap grew closed. This is a pretty minor thing and if it was not causing any problems in my infant I would probably wait until the child is already seeing a dentist (3-4)and you've seen how the teeth are growing in. Then clip if necessary.

Hi J.,
I am a general dentist in the area and thought I could help a little. The attachment (frenum) is not something that has to be delt with at this young age, unless it is affecting speech or feeding. I would recommend a dentist that has a laser, because the procedure is a piece of cake with a laser. I have had this done on myself surgically and it was a fairly painful recovery. I do this procedure routinely on kids with a laser and we only use topical anesthetic gel and this kids do super! It takes about 5 min. Not a big deal! Good luck to you!

Hi J....
Are you referring to frenulum linguli? If so, all 4 of my children have had it, and we've had it clipped when they were very young (I think the latest we've had it done was 6 months, the earliest was a couple of weeks). Our pediatrician always did it as it's a quick and simple procedure that requires no numbing of any kind. I personally wouldn't go to the extra expense/effort of going to a ped. dentist when it's a very common procedure for a qualified pediatrician to do. I was so worried about it, but it seriously takes just a few moments and the worst part for the baby is having their lip held by the gauze. I nursed my children immediately afterwards and they were fine. I'm glad I had it done early on as it would've been more traumatic for them as they got older. I think you'll agree. My children didn't have any problems eating, nursing, etc. either, but I'm glad it's done and over with! Best of luck to you and your daughter.

I would ask a pediatric dentist. A little boy I used to babysit had the surgery done and it helped him TONS! The surgery didn't bother him much. There is a wonderful pediatric dentist in Liberty- Dr Scott Thomas http://shoalcreeksmiles.com/our-office.php
He is gentle with the kids. My kids ask to go back if it's been a while between visits :) He does his own surgeries at Children's Mercy- so he does it all- the initial consultation, the surgery, the follow up. He takes after hour calls- so he's always available if you have questions! Good luck!!
