My 20 month old son is in a daycare and I am concerned about the following things:

1. They take these little kids out in the hot sun for play that too in the afternoon! Its too hot for us adults to go out, how can little ones tolerate? When asked, they say it is the state policy that kids need to be taken out atleast once a day no matter what!
It doesn't make sense for me...please let me know if there is any such policy and if all Daycares do it.

2. They let the little ones take a nap with their shoes on, which acc to me is very uncomfortable. Again, when asked they said that is for fire reasons...if there is a fire they want children to have their shoes on. Again need to know if they do the same e'where.

3. They do not have an indoor play area or a webcam. How high do you rate these facilities.

Please let me know if you mamas out there know about these concerns of mine :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for answering to my Qs and concerns. It feels so much better now, however I will talk to the Daycare to see if they can take the kids out earlier in the morning when it is much cooler. I do love to be outside myself and and want my son to have outdoor times, but not when the weather is hot.

Thanks again to all of you who answered.

I think they do have to take them outside... but they should DEFINITELY be doing it in the morning before it gets hot!

The shoe thing is a fire regulation... we weren't allowed to take kids shoes off at the daycare I worked at.

I just found a place to put my son in for the fall. I looked at several locations and a few did have indoor play areas for when it was raining (including the one I decided on). This one also has cameras. A lot of places out there have them... and some of them even have it where you can watch your child on a webcam.

I'd just look around. It took me a while to find a place that I really felt comfortable putting my son. Not that the places had anything wrong with them... they just didn't feel like the right place for us. Then I walked into this place and just knew it was the right one.

Always trust your motherly intuition!

Good Luck,
A.

My son's not in a daycare but he attends a Mother's Day Out 2 times a week and they do have a required playtime outside, but in the hot summer months they do it in the morning like at 10 a.m.
And yes, they do leave the shoes on while they nap. That doesn't seem to bother the kids. I've seen this at 2 different MDO's that my son has been in....and I pick him up when he's still asleep. All the kids are fine...fast asleep with their shoes on.

I understand your concerns and I have worked in a high end daycare and they do require going outside at least once a day, when the weather is too hot they should however be going out before 10:00. The shoe thing, it's way too much trouble to take shoes off everyone and then put them back on, I have never seen that and the fire law is correct. very few daycares have an indoor play area, I have only seen 1 and as far as no webcam, most don't have them, and if they don't that does not mean they are not a good daycare. Good luck!

I don't know about everything you are talking about but I believe it is a law that the children have to have their shoes on at all times. This is so the kids can evacuate the building quickly if need be.

Where my son goes to preschool, they leave their shoes on for naptime also. They do go outside; however, if it's raining or too hot, they do have an indoor play area. There are no webcams either, but I trust where he goes very much. I don't think many places do have webcams.

my son is in inhome day care and they adjust the outside time depending on the time of the year. So, during the hottest time of the year, they are outside at 9am. During the best times of the year, they go out twice a day. They should adjust accordingly...

I worked in childcare setting for about ten years and I went to college to become an Early Childhood Teacher. I believe all children must go out for at least thirty minutes a day unless it's an ozone awareness day and/or it must be above 40 degrees. Most daycares require twice a day. Also the shoes on at naptime is a policy most daycares go by now. Most new daycares will have an indoor area but not all of them. It really depends on the space of the center. I wish webcams were a law that all childcare centers went by!!
