I registered my daughter at a headstart program, in the process I was required to take in documents such as her birth certificate, social security cards (mines and hers)pay stubs from my husband and a few other things.A few weeks ago I received a call from them stating my husband income was over the limit, and I was free to come in to them to discuss daycare options. I didn't go right away but I went yesterday and to my surprise my daughter's files were no where to be found and they can't give an explanation.
What have me real worried is the fact our social security numbers are at risk even my husbands because it's on his pay stubs which they had asked to see four of them.
I need some advice what to do I am worried.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice, Social Security told me to make a report and also monitor anything that may seem fraud, I also sent a letter to the Head Administration,
called the school to find out if they had since located the files, but I got a lot of attitude so at present I am doing whats left to be done where our credit is concern.

Hi G.,
Wow that really stinks. They must have at least received your papers because they told you that your husbands income is above the level required for your daughter to go there. It's their responsibility to try and locate the documents. I would try and contact the three credit bureau's
and let them know to be on the alert for any type of action going on in your credit reports. I know there is a freeze you can put on the credit reports for several months. The credit report company has to contact you before issuing any type of credit via charge cards, loans, etc because use of the social security number is needed. There is no charge for this and I think you have to update it every few months. I think you also need to place a complaint at the headstart program and make them aware of your concerns. If you feel that there is some fraud going on, I would think about contacting the police. I hope this has helped a little. It's a shame that we need to be so cautious now a days with people being so malicious these days. Let me know how you make out. Good luck. D. S

G.,

Wow, I am really sorry for this. This is exactly the reason I won't even apply for head start with my daughter. I don't think that educational agencies should be privy to that information. For future reference, never put your SS# on anything. They are not needed for almost all of the places that ask for them. Never give them to doctors offices...insurance companies don't do insurance card #'s by your soc anymore so doctors don't need them. People cannot be trusted, unfortunately.

Hopefully this is just a case of misplaced papers by a disorganized organization, but just in case you should definitely put fraud alerts with your bank and the three credit reporting agencies. Also, start getting copies of your credit reports. You can do it through annualcreditreport.com They give you free reports once a year per agency, so if you do a different agency every 4 months you are able to check your report 3 times a year. If you are not sure how to go about doing any of this, get Dave Ramsey's book Financial Peace...he fully explains how to do all of those things that are needed to protect your information.

I would call the three credit report companies and ask if they can put your account on alert. Explain the situation and the reason that you are worried. I think the companies are Experion, Transunion and equifax although I'm not sure of their names.
Good luck

Hi,

I worked for Head Start for 8 years, and stay home to take care of my 8 month old. I worked in Saratoga NY and everything was on the computer, but the initail paper work and that had no ss# just name, adress and an idea of what you make. I would contact the director and see. Its seems a bit fishy, as we did everything on the computer, and unless deleated, it is there. I am sorry that happend, and start there, and then call the head director and make a complaint, and then the police. I am not sure what they may do. Also, get a credit report in your name and your childs, they are free, do it in a few weeks, and see. Let me know, I am feel your pain.. Take care

Hi G.,

You should be concerned.

I would start by writing a letter to Head Start. It's going to cost you a little extra, but send it certified. If something does happen it'll be well worth it (or you could hand deliver it and get a receipt).

Next write letters to all 3 credit reporting agencies. Attach a copy of the letter you wrote to Head Start. Also ask them in they will contact you whenever someone makes an inquiry on you. I believe they will do this for free for a short period of time. Give them a call and find out.

Now would be a good time to subscribe to one of those "protect your credit" type companies.

Document every little detail. If you speak to someone get a name, write down the date and time of the call. Keep a copy of everything you mail out. I know this may seem extreme, but it'll be worth it if something does happen. Think of it as an insurance policy.

If you notice any type of fraudulent activity, report it immediately.

Chances are the file just got misplaced so try not to stress too much.

Best of luck to you.

G.,

I think that you should report the social Security Cards stolen so they can put a block on it or a high security on it. This is what i would do. I had gotten my purse stolen a few years ago which so happened to have my ss card in it and i called the ss Office and reported it. Do this just to be on the safe side.
