Hello cooking mothers. I have a recipe that requires salsa. I never know which kind of salsa to buy. It seems every one I choose is just "ok". Do any of you have a salsa that you can recommend?

My favorite for enchiladas etc. is Jardines Cilantro Salsa. I won't make Mexican food without it. You can find it with the other salsas at H.E.B., Randalls etc.
Happy cooking!

The best store-bought salsa I've found is at HEB. It's called Clint's salsa. It comes in HOT, MEDIUM and MILD. It's way better than the "name" brands. It's not real chunky and has a good flavor. Try it and see what you think.

Wal-Mart has a black bean white corn salsa that is very yummy! I brought it to a party once and everyone raved about it. I've had other black bean/white corn salsa's and they are just OK (even expensive brands). So far the Wal-Mart brand is still my favorite!

Hi L.,

I usually like Arriba salsa, but what you could do is taste it and then add to it... more onion, some cilantro...or you could start from scratch that's the best salsa...for small portions use:

2-3 tomatoes
1/2 onion
3 garlic cloves
1 jalapeno
1/8 -1/4 of the cilantro bushel

now i like strong flavors so you might want add less...don't forget to add salt and pepper to taste...if you want to get a smokey flavor add those big red peppers...let it rehydrate for about 30 minutes and use 1/2 to all of it...

you boil the tomatoes and the jalapeno for about 15 minutes dependant on size of tomato if large then let boil for about 20 minutes. THen add all ingredients in food processor for the kind of consistency you like...i like mine restaurant style so i put it in the blender and liquify.

Take care,
Blew

Greetings fellow twin mom!

I enjoy making my own pico when we are cooking out, entertaining, etc., but when I need a quick salsa for a recipe, or just for a mexican plate, I buy Hatch Picante Sauce. It is the BEST I've found and my husband is quiet picky. We enjoy eating it with chips as well. I have not had success finding it anywhere but Albertsons. It is on the shelf with the canned jalapeno's, green chili's, etc. BTW, Hatch also makes awesome enchilada sauce. I love their Tex-Mex and the green enchilada sauce. I've also bought the Huevos Rancheros, but have not used it yet. HEB will stock items you request so it might be worth your while to fill out a request form. I use the Tex Mex for my beef enchiladas and I've also used it when making Asado. It is delicious!

Hi L.,

Well I am married to a chef and he has his own salsa, but believe it or not there are times I don't feel like making it. There is a resturant and for a pint of thier salsa 2.00 fresh that I will go get sometimes. I love it its just as good. No fuss,no mess. Just pick your favorite mexican resturant and go pick you up some of theirs. You will payless for theirs than you will in the store and you get fresh. Simplicity at its best!

Do you have a food processor? Then you can make your own fresh salsa pretty easily by pulsing:
1 lb. roma tomatoes quartered
1/2 roughly chopped white onion (scald with hot water & drain before adding)
t. salt
t. sugar
juice of 1/2 lime, squeezed
1/2 serrano pepper w/ seeds (can substitute 1/4 jalepeno)

If you like a lot of heat you can add more peppers.

L., I have the answer for you. A mom's group friend brought this to bunco the other night and it was so good. Just like my favorite restaurant. The brand is Ana's. It is found in the cold section of the store. I have only bought it at HEB and it is over near the other prepared salsas/picos/avocadoes. You will love it. White lid and clear tub.

Make it in a blender. It's super easy and you get to control the taste and consistency. I use one big can of Hunt's whole tomatoes, 1 clove garlic, 2 fresh jalapenos, about a quarter of a small onion, cilantro to taste, salt & pepper. It's great and it's easy.
Otherwise, go by your favorite Mexican restaurant and get some to go!
If you have to get it at the store, there are some good ones in the produce section of HEB. Ana's is great, as is the one in a bag that may be HEB brand.

My favorite store bought salsa is Clint's. My family loves the Chipotle flavor. It has a nice smoky flavor with a little extra kick at the end, but it isn't too spicy. Even my kids (9 and 6) like it.

At HEB if you look back in the refrigerated section near the sour cream, we like the Julio's mild or Rose's...Though any salsa gets "old hat after awhile" Julio's has been our go to salsa for awhile...that is for chips and dip...for cooking Pace usually does the trick.

For commercially produced, I buy Herdez. For fresh, I get the salsa fresca from Newflowers or go to the mexican food place close to home.

I love making my own salsa. It always tastes best. However, sometimes that just isn't practical.
If you have a Costco membership, try Jack's salsa. I don't know where else it might be sold.

I've got a recipe that my family and I just love and it's great with corn chips.
In a blender put a handful of cilantro (cleaned and I just grab a handful of the tops but I don't take off the stems or use the very thick part of them). add a pinch of salt, 2 tsp of garlic, or 4 cloves of whole,
several whole japalenoes (we like Trappy's best) and then a can of whole, peeled tomatoes and "liquify". Enjoy!!

We are very picky about salsa since we usually make our own but the HEB brand Cilantro Salsa is great if you like an authentic flavor.
