Need Advice About Giving My 2-Weeks Notice

Hi everyone. I just want to get everyone elses opinion on this too. I'll give you a little bit of background...
I work as a hairstylist, and I absolutely love my job! It's probably, well definately the best job I've ever had. The only problem is that I'm making no money at all. Matter of fact, my husband and I were talking and almost every week that I've been there we've came out negative. It cost me more money in gas to drive there and back then I'm bringing home. I am on a commission only because it's a new salon. Plus, we are adopting a newborn and I want to be home with it. I was thinking about just cleaning a few houses, that way when we do get the baby I can keep cleaning on the side. What does everyone think? Is 2-weeks enough notice? I just want someone elses opinion on this. Help!
K.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their response to my request. I felt the same way, but it's always better to get a second opinion. :) I gave my 2 week notice on Thursday and it couldn't have went any better. My boss was soooo good about it. He hugged me and said that he totally understood the money issue, and that I could have my job back at any time down the line when money is no longer an issue. I was really happy with the way it went! Thanks so much!!!!

2 weeks is enough notice unless you signed a contract that states you need to give more than a 2 week written notice. Cleaning houses is a great way to make extra money. A suggestion to help you, if you can give out names and #'s of people for whom you have cleaned as references really helps. Also, since you are a hairdresser, maybe you could do hair at home on the side, or advertise to go to people's home, especially those who can't get out easily, to do thier hair. I understand that is really a growing need.

Two weeks is plenty of time. I would definatly keep doing hair there is some incredible salon's around here and I have a couple of friends that own some. You can make an incredible amount of money it just takes time to build up your customers. Congrats on the new family and I hope everything works out for you. I am a stay at home mom that works from home and I love every second of it. I thought this would never be possible because I too used to work a full time job and go to school. If you ever need to talk just let me know.

Cleaning on the side is a great income and with the new baby you'll need the flexible hours.You don't need no negatives when planning on a little one soon.Two weeks notice at the salon is plenty.Enjoy that new baby! :~}

Two weeks is the standard. Congrats on the "new" family that is so wonderful! You need to do what is best for you and your new baby! BUT... remember you don't want to burn any bridges so yes I would give 2 weeks. If this isn't a job that isn't going to be on your resume... then who are we kidding let them know and walk but... remember You could end up with your own salon one day... ;)

2 weeks is the norm for notice of leaving an employer. I would give them the full 2 weeks because you never know if you may need to use this employer for a reference in the future or even go back to work for them if your location changes so better to leave on great terms. I had a housecleaning business for 12 yrs and I loved it! Good luck and if you ever have any questions, I would be glad to help. :) Congrats on the new baby!

Two weeks is plenty. I gave two weeks when I left my last job for something better and it felt like an eternity. My bosses did not find a replacement before I left, but I gave them two full weeks to prepare. I think it would be silly for anyone to ask anything more of you, especially since you're about to welcome an little one into your home.

2 weeks is all anybody is suposed to ask for... And if they know you are getting a baby.. I am sure they will say Oh you just want to go on leave.. just say NO.. you want to be a SAHM.. but keep in mind... Maybe you can cut hair at your home... Lots do.. but also yes.. Doing the houses will be nie and work with your day too hu!!!

Dont worry!!!!

and maybe later... you can get another job at another place in town... Their are a ton... I wish I had found the right places to work.. I got burned out and quit cutting hair... I just do my hubbys and boys now... My mom's from time to time....

Good luck with the baby!! I am sure all will be fine!!!

Two weeks is a good practice of courtesy even though I agree that you don't really owe it to them. I cleaned houses for awhile and hated it. I ended up being a Work at Home Mom instead and I love that because I actually get rewarded for the effort I put in. And it's not that much effort, really.

Two week's notice is standard. I think it is sufficient but if you feel like you would feel better giving more, as long as you have time before the baby arrives, you could certainly do that too...maybe 3 or 4 weeks or something.
Congrats on adopting a baby! I am an adoptive mom. Did you know you can nurse the baby and that there is also donated breastmilk if you need to supplement with that? I can tell you more if you like, my email is treefroggy8 at yahoo.

HI K.,
You said it all. Just tell them you have been given another path to follow and are adopting a newborn and would like to give your two weks notice. But, also include that it is costing you more to be there than what you are making and you can't afford this at this time. Tell them not to forget you that you may want to return after the babie has become school age.

TWO WEKS IS SUFFICIENT NOTICE UNLESS YOU ARE INA MANAGEMENT POSITION, WHICH I DID NOT GET THE IMPRESSION YOU WERE BEING ON COMMISSION ONLY. WHEN YOU GIVE YOUR NOTICE MAKE SURE YOU LET THEM KNOW HOW MUCH YOU HAVE ENJOYED IT AND MAKE SURE TO FULFILL THE TWO WEEKS. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS

Two weeks notice is more than most people give, especially in the salon industry. You can resign due to personal reasons since you are not obligated to tell them why. I would definitely give notice since you don't want to burn any bridges. Good luck to you!! By the way, I have a friend in Florida that cleans houses on the side and she does really well with it. Good Luck!!!!!

If your not making enough money to make a profit then I don't believe you owe any notice at all. It's not your job to prop up the new business. You didn't open the shop and it's not your shop. You won't pocket the proceeds in years to come when the shop passes it's lean times. You don't owe them anything.
