Need a Pediatric GI...

We have tried 2 different Pediatric GI's in Oklahoma City. The first I HATED. The second is great but she is not coming up with anything new (other than she can't find anything and to see the allergist). I want someone VERY good about thinking outside the box. I don't mind a little travel. Not more than a couple of hours each way please. My son has been fighting GI issues for almost 2 yrs. We know he has food intolerances, not allergies. He has been scoped, a little more than a year ago, and that was negative for Celiac and EOS disorders. Things can change in a year though... He has been tested for Cystic Fibrosis. That too was negative.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Been to OU. Saw Grunow. He is the one I very strongly disliked. You simply do not tell a parent that you do not believe them. He see's Dr Hatch.

I will suggest a few resources that have been a help to me and my son that have struggled with allergies, asthma, and just random things over and over.

Feast Without Yeast, a book by Bruce Semon and Lori Kornblum. It's 4 stages to better health, teaches you how to eliminate foods from your diet. You start with taking some things out, then if the symptoms persist, moving on to the next. It provides lots of recipes that will help you not only do it but to cook it.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Allergies by Paul Ehrlich. He is an allergist himself and talks about whether testing is effective and gives you a plan to help your child to get better. You can also read reviews about both books on Amazon.com. I know that you can check this one out from the metro library.

Lastly, I would suggest watching or recording a show called "Your Health" by Dr. Richard Becker. He helps people take care of themselves naturally. You can also call in on certain days and he will help you and send you supplements from Bioinnovations. It is on KSBI 52 if you don't have cable and if you do you can find out which station it is on at familynet.org under shows.

You might also research candida albicans on the internet or in the library. Some of the searches will teach you the symptoms of it when it gets out of control, such as fatigue, arthritis like symptoms, diarrhea, asthma, etc. The treatment is diet, probiotics, and other things like oil of oregano or olive leaf extract, which are natural antibiotics.

Before going on to the allergist I would do some studying up, just my suggestions after doing my own since our doctors seem to shrug their shoulders and go on about their business while we are still suffering.

If you have any other questions pleast let me know.

Allergist treat more than just allergies. I would follow the advice of the PED GI physician. I would recommend going to Dr. Richard Hatch at the Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma Clinic. The clinic has a registered dietician that is one of the best in the state. I think that you are covering your basis but need to move on to another specialty.

C.,

I have used Dr. John Grunow at OU Children's (he also practices w/Dr. Marilyn Steele at Mercy one day a week) for 3 of my children and found him to be wonderful. He has also treated several of my friends children with great results as well. He was truly my lifesaver for my 4th child when he was an infant.

Dr. Rich Hatch at the OKC Clinic is a wonderful allergist and a good friend of ours. If you want to try exploring allergies, I would highly recommend him.

Who is your pediatrician? A really good one should be your first resource for specialists & possible disorders. Drs. Alana Adair (ours for 18 years) & Michael Vincent at NW Pediatrics both "think outside the box" and do a good job of researching & diagnosing.

I wish you the best, C.. There is nothing more difficult than having a child that in unwell & hurting. I remember it well! Please find some friends with similar issues to support you. And, feel free to contact me directly if you need to talk more. I will keep you & your family in my prayers!

Peace,
P.

I'm not sure the age of your son or what all has been tried. We used Dr Steele in the Mercy building for a year or so. The GERD was pretty obvious but we had other tricky issues that were harder to figure out. Turns out she had gall stones at age 5. We did not have her gall bladder removed at that time and have been using accupressure. I will be happy to answer any other questions.

I don't have any personal experience with this doctor, but I work at Children's hospital at OU Medical center, and we do a lot of studies for him. His name is John Grunow. The parents of my patients seem to be pleased with him. Hope that helps you.

Hi C.,
Have you tried Children's hospital at OU medical center. I suggest them because when my daughter who is 17 now was a baby was unable to drink any for of milk cow's, soy, goat's, acidophilos and so on this was before all the lactose free products came out and they were the people who took the time to find out the problem. They actually had to perscribe a special diet and perscribe special milk from Canada to help her it took a while to find the answer. At children's also there is such a variety of specialties and a wide range of thoughts and doctors so if you get a doctor you do not care for you can always get a new doctor there and they will search for the results. They have a genetic clinic there that does the gene mapping to find the problems and the solutions... sounds like that may be an area to explore.

Good luck and please keep us informed.
