To tell you the truth fake nails are harder, but realy nails cut easier. so fake nails i beleive are perfectly safe, also, you can get solar nails and ask them to cut them really short that is what i do.
I really want to get my nails done. Do you think fake nails will bother a baby? I like my nails pretty short, but I was wondering if anyone had an opinion either way. Fake nails or not?
Thanks everyone. I think I'll get them done and just continue to was my hands really well during the day. I need some pampering! Thanks again.

Hey Christie! I am a lover of fake nails. I love going to the nail salon and having them done. My daughter is almost 3, but when she was born I cut my nails as short as possible, because I was afraid of "nicking her". I would say it's up to you, but also that baby's skin is very thin and you just need to be careful not to accidentaly scratch him/her.
Hi Christie,
I have natural nails that grow would grow really long if I let them. I found that with both my sons, I have to keep them short b/c I have jabbed my son in the eye with my thumb nail, and have scratch them several times. Even though I keep them short, I still go to the salon and get them done! That is my little treat to myself, it feels good and they look nicer than when I do them myself. Also, when I had them painted red, my sons would really notice them and play with my fingers! I thnk as long as you keep them clean underneath, there isn't a problem with having natural or fake nails. D.
Hello Christi,
I was a new mom who waited about a until my son was almost a year before getting solar nails. I can offer you my services if you would like to have beautiful natural nails. Please visit my website:
Have a safe and happy holiday.
I started getting fake nails after our first son because I kept scratching the baby with my real ones. They don't hurt the baby because they are thicker than your normal nails. Just don't take the baby with you to get them done. What smells a little bit to us is overwhelming to them. Other than that, just be a normal woman.
Christy,
It sounds like you are getting lots of advice to consider, I would just like to add that many hospitals have banned fake nails because they were found to be a repository of not only fungus but bacterial infections. You may want to consider holding off until your baby is out of diapers or really do great handwashing with a fingernail brush frequently to avoid ecoli. Just a thought.

Fake nails do not scratch. The edges of solar nails are thick and rounded. The downside is the maintenance and if you want to take them off, they really make your nails thin and fragile. It also makes it hard to use your nails to open things.
I loved the way my nails looked when I had fake nails. I always got them to give me a sport length and buff them. They would remain shiny for weeks. But I hated them when I took them off. You have to take them off periodically. I never put them back on after that.
I keep my nails cut pretty short now and I just have them done at the salon.
Good luck!!!

A lot of people don't know this, but long nails are just a roosting spot for bacteria. So if you do decide to get your nails done, be sure to wash your hands and keep the underneath of your nails clean. Babies usually wont mind the long nails...your baby just might like it if he is tickleish, otherwise just becarful not to scratch your baby or poke him with your nails..obviously.
I am a mom of a 2month old and a professional, licensed Nail Technician. I wear "nail enhancements" and there is nothing wrong with you wearing them and taking care of your child. As long as you keep them short (so you don't poke or scratch your baby) and clean. One thing that I do in my home, is wash my hands constantly and I keep a nail brush in the bathroom next to the soap so that I and anyone who wants to touch my baby can clean there hands and nails properly. Hope this helps.
I think if you want to get your nails done you should.
There is nothing wrong with getting them done at a reputable shop where they sterilize the tools.
I have my nails done and they do not bother my son at all. Just make sure they are not too long as it does make it harder to change diapers and give baths. Just make sure they are not sharp around the edges and you should be fine. In fact, I tickle my son's tummy and back with mine and he floats off to sleep :).
I'd heard about the bacteria and fungus that they found under fake nails too. So I'd say wait till diapers are history, then do it if you want. Time is hard to find as you have more kids, though I'm all about treating us hard working moms! But you might want to reconsider fake nails, and go for manicures instead.
I was a total solar nail diva before I had my son. Even while I was pregnant, I still went for my 6 wk fills. The funny thing is that the day I took him home from the hospital, I went straight to the bathroom and cut each one of them off with clippers. I just couldnt STAND them all of a sudden. Now that my son is 4 mo old and I've been taking my prenatal vitamins, my nails grow at rapid speed! And so strong and healthy! I just went and had my 1 st french manicure since he was born and I'm proud to say that this time, they are not coated in acrylic. I had the manicurist file the edges in a round shape rather than square so that they're not sharp.
If you plan to go get your nails done and want tips and acrylic, I'm sure you'll be fine! They aren't very sharp. Go pamper yourself. God knows you need it. :)
I used to work at The Children's Hospital here in Dallas and in Colorado. We weren't allowed to have fake nails because of all of the germs that you can keep under them that you don't know about. There were people sharing those germs from patient to patient and as healthcare workers, we wash our hands many many times a day.
That was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw your posting.
hey Christie-
go ahead and pamper yourself..i have nails on and also have a 1 year old boy and i feel that my nails actually help me in my daily actiities..they give me a grip of the stuff i need to do cuz my real nails are soo weak and br eak off that they actually scratch my son. if your looking for a place try The Nail Place ###-###-####. They are reali clean and sterile.
Hi Christie,
I have had my nails done for 24 years and I had a lot of people telling me that I would need to take them off or not even have them done while pregnant. I, of course, DID NOT!! This is my one vice and they always look terrific!!
My one tip is to keep them cut shorter and squared tip. You won't get them caught in things so much if they are cut this way. I used my knuckles to do alot of other things for my baby son. Now, if you aren't use to having them, I would wait until your baby is older, but if you have had them in the past and know how to function with them, it should not be a problem. Just remember, that sometimes you will get "poopy" underneath them and so keep a "nail brush" handy to completely clean your hands once you are done changing one of those diapers!!
Good Luck!
Btw, my son is 3 now and is fine and my nails still look AWESOME!!

I had "fake" nails when my oldest was born 2 years ago. I kept them on for the first 4 months, but since he was a preemie and was in the NICU for 2 weeks we had to be extremely careful with handling him only after we washed our hands. It is the same with term babies as well with all the hand washing that parents do. I took them off because I developed a fungus and they have been off for almost 2 years now. I am having them done again this Saturday and I now have a 5 1/2 MO as well.
My advice to you is keep them short, not too square, get them done at a well respected and clean place (preferably where you will have your own files, etc.), and watch them carefully it they start to lift where you don't develop a fungus. If you have one that lifts and you suspect there might have been water standing between your realy nail and the acrylic, have it removed ASAP, treated with fungicide, and watch it if you have a new one put on right away. DON'T let them file the lift down and then add more acrylic. That just hinders the problem if you have/suspect onset of a fungus. Please learn from my mistake as it took a total of 15 months to completely get rid of mine.
But, pamper yourself...mom's with newborns derserve it!!!
