My go-to dish for pot lucks is deviled eggs. People see me come in the door with them and I barely make it to the table with the plate before the over is gone and so are the eggs.
Hi Moms! I have a huge family reunion tomorrow and everyone is to bring a covered dish. I was planning to bring peach cobbler but my oven is broken! Ugh! I definitely don't want to buy some pre-made grocery store bakery item, because that's lame. And, I don't want to spend too much money (less than $20). What should I do?
My go-to dish for pot lucks is deviled eggs. People see me come in the door with them and I barely make it to the table with the plate before the over is gone and so are the eggs.
I just ate dinner and you ladies are making me drool. I want to go make me second dinner now....Fruit salad..Jello with raspberries..and whip cream. Maybe add some bubble water to give it some pep!
Fruit salad: my recipe is apples (2-3 kinds), grapes and raisins. Mix together with vanilla yogert. (whole fat is best), Children and adults all love it and it is nutritious.
Go get an angel food cake from the grocery store, fresh strawberries, 1 package of strawberry jello, and whipped cream.
Tear up the cake into chunks. Chop up the strawberries into slices and fold into the cake. Mix up jello and pour over top of cake/berry mixture. Put in refrigerator for an hour. After the hour, take out and stir in the whipped cream. Back in the refrigerator until ready to take.
I have never been anywhere that the deviled eggs weren't the first thing to go :D Oh and meatballs in the crockpot are also sooooo good! I am sure you can get a great recipe online if you decide to go that route. Good luck!
Ambrosia salad-
Canned fruit, canned pineapple, mini marshmallows, cool whip, shredded coconut. Drain the fruit, then mix together and let sit for at least an hour.
(Other items that can be added - maraschino cherries, mandarin oranges, pecans. In stead of cool whip, you can also use sour cream.) If you google this, you will see about 8,000 ways to do it. That tells me that it cannot be messed up!
Have fun!
if you can or have one - I believe there is a recipe for Peach Cobbler in a slow cooker.....try something in a slow cooker!!!
YOU CAN DO THIS!! Google slowcooker/crock pot dessert recipes...you will be surprised at what you find!
Do a simple pasta salad. Pasta with pesto, canned sliced olives and artichoke hearts with some shredded parmesan stirred in. It'll be fine, and no one expects pasta salad to be hot.
Pasta: about $3 dollars for a box. (only do one box.)
Pesto: get the Alfredos, and get two. Probably 7-8 dollars, total.
Artichoke hearts: 2 cans. (not sure on price. Do you have a Trader Joe's?) Slice into halves or bite-size pieces.
Olives: get a can of whole ones and run through your food processor or slice yourself. About $3.
Oh, and it's just simple enough most people will be happy. My four year old son likes it.
Crock pot peach cobbler....
Find one you like:

Also added bonus with a crock pot it will stay warm!!!
can it be a dessert? get an angel food cake turn it on its side so it looks like a wheel. slice down so you have rings I always do 3 slices but you can do more or less. on the bottom layer put some whipped cream and a layer of strawberries, second layer we put whipped cream and pinapple, third layer whipped cream and banana slices. you now have a tall cake with layers of angelfood cake and fresh fruit cover with more whipped cream. and put in fridge to firm up a little bit. drizzle with chocolate and some chopped pecans right before serving. it is a really great banana split cake. our family loves it. slice it and be prepared as it might fall apart. so don't try to do super thin slices. so yummy
Boil a couple packages of the tri colored sprial pasta. Rinse in cool water and drain. Pour in a bottle of zesty Italian salad dressing. Add a can of sliced olives. Stir. Nice cold pasta salad. Goes over big everytime I make it. And its cheap. (o:
How about bringing what we call Frito Salad? Everyone loves it. Brown some hamburger, throw in a bag of salad, onions, kidney beans, tomatoes, grated cheese, then toss with some french dressing and fritos. It's easy and always a hit. If you wanted a dessert, maybe no bake cookies?
Since you were planning on dessert anyway, how about a no bake cheesecake? You can make the crust yourself with graham crackers, butter, and sugar. You can buy the cream cheese filling already prepared or just make your own. Serve with berries for a cool springtime dessert.
does your stove work? if so, get 1 lb little johns sausages, 1 an apple pie filling, brown sausage, drain fat add pie filling top with cinnamon YUM!
My aunt used to make really yummy caramel apple salad. It was just apples cut into cubes, a big container of whipped topping, a box of instant butterscotch pudding, raisins (if you like them), and pecans or walnuts. Mix it all together and chill. It is inexpensive, easy to make in big batches, and really good.
I'm sure you will come up with something wonderful. Enjoy your reunion! :)
No-bake "noodle cookies" - they sound gross, but are so yummy! (And easy and cheap!)

I don't normally include raisins, but whatever floats your boat.
When our oven broke I used our BBQ grill. Light one side to get the temp up and cook on the other so that it doesn't burn. I made brownies on the grill and it came out great! A crock pot or a pressure cooker works great too.
Deviled eggs.
Potato salad
Pulled pork (in a crock pot with BBQ sauce) and hamburger buns.
Relish tray.
I make a dip for fruit out of strawberry cream cheese and marshmallow fluff (or you can use yogurt instead of fluff to make it a little healthier) and serve it with cut-up strawberries, bananas, grapes, peaches, etc.
Or something you can cook in a crock-pot.
Crock Pot cheese dip and tortilla chips.
Big thing of velveeta, a few cans of rotel, and a can of cream of celery.
Doesn't take long to warm to melted.
Dessert- banana pudding. :)
Salad, fruit salad, potato salad, deviled eggs, pudding, ice cream, watermelon
My husband's aunt brought a salsa thing with chips to Easter and it was SO good! I even took some home! It was called Cowboy Caviar. Here's the link for the recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cowboy-caviar/detail.aspx
She served it with Tostitos Scoops and I'm telling you...It was a huge hit!
chocolate covered strawberries! its cheaper and easier than you think, and they make a great presentation and they are my favorite food in the world :) just buy chocolate wafers and melt them in a coffee mug in the microwave and dip, hold them up for a minute, put them on waxed paper... you can use good chocolate too :), yum... now im gonna have to make them.....
i love this thread!
Strawberry pie or pretty much any cold pie and do a store bought crust, not as good but still good.Banana Pudding with the vanilla wafers in it,banana are 38 cents a lb right now at Price Chopper.Fruit salad,jell-o salad or jello mold with fruit in it.Watergate salad is a personal favorite of mine.
1 (3.4 ounce) package instant pistachio pudding mix
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, with juice
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
Hope this helps =)
If you're supposed to (or want to) bring a dessert, and you have a crockpot, here are a couple of recipes:

If you don't have a crockpot, how about some sliced apples w/ caramel sauce (you can make caramel sauce on the stove, if you stove is working). Or sweetened whipped cream berries, or yogurt parfaits (berries, vanilla yogurt, and granola, in layers).
Cook something in a crockpot. So many options. Or make a dip and bring chips. Here's a good one:
Hormel Chili w/ no beans
1 package Cream Cheese
8-12 oz shredded taco cheese
Cover bottom of microsafe dish with cream cheese, add the chili, and then top with shredded taco cheese. Cover and microwave for 4-7 minutes depending on your microwave. Mix and serve. Tastes best hot to warm (warning, once cooled it doesn't "look" appetitizing but can be reheated and taste fine).
Is it just your oven or is your stove top broken too? If the stovetop is working, Copper Pennies is one of my favorites to bring. You can even cook them in the microwave) It's cheap and can be made overnight and refrigerated. Meant to be served cold.
Slice carrots width wise and cook to the point of still slightly firm. Drain and marinate in a mixture of equal parts of vinegar (your favorite kind) and oil, one cup of sugar with raw sliced onions (I use Vidalia) and green or red peppers. Chill overnight and serve cold...The sweet and sour of the oil and vinegar is my family's favorite.
Have fun!
