My now 13 yr old daughter got her first period last fall. Since then, she has only had 3 cycles. My older girls were the same way for the first 6 months to a year. I started menstruating when I was 11 and then it stopped for a year when I was 12. I was always told all of this was normal and that some girls aren't "regular" for a few years (or longer, in some cases).

I did ask my 13 yr old to write down when she does get it on her calendar and for how long just in case we need to know for some reason (like at a physical or something).

Good luck!

This is pretty common. Think about how long it took you to regulate. I was in my twenties! My sister is 25 and still has not regulated. She goes months (5+) without a period. Unless you are concerned that she may be sexually active, no need to worry. Just make sure she always has a pad with her so shes not caught in an embarrassing situation.

I understand that is common. My daughter started at 12 and has been very regular from the start. However, about once every 6 months or so, her cramping is so bad she is sick and I have to take her out of school or let her stay home a day.

To try to offset these times, she starts Midol about 3 days before she expects to start per our pedi recommendation.

There is no need to worry. When a young girl starts her cycle, the very first one is usually not immediatly followed by the second. I only know this because in my culture ( Native American) we celebrate the first and second cycle. The first is meant to be an introduction to womanhood. I know many of my younger sisters who paused after their first cycle, some for 2 months and some only one. Either way I wouldn't worry. Its after the second one that it starts occuring every month.

I can remember when I started my period, I was the same age. The same thing happened to me. It skipped around a bit and then as time went on, I got on a regular schedule. I have had no problems since....30 years later!

Not necessarily my daughter had her first one at eleven and didn't have another one til she was fourteen, she never had a regular period. She is now 38yrs and the mother of five beautiful children...
