Once again asking for your help. My car is in need of a wheel barring. It is a 2004 Chevy Aveo. I took it to the dealer and they said it was not under warranty anymore (41,000 miles) and they are charging me $532.00 to repair it. Everyone tells me they are charging me more because I am taking it to the dealer. Any advice on this or anyone know of a good mechanic? I am in Darien. Thank you.

Hi Frances, I attend Calvary Naperville Church and I noticed that you are a single mom. At Calvary they have a auto repair program designed to help single moms. I am not sure if it is only for members or regular attendees, but I think it's worth the try to give them a call to see if they can assist you. I hope that you are able to be helped.

These guys are AWESOME! Fast, honest and well priced. I would travel across town to use them. =) If they can't do it they will recommend someone that can.
I know you've had some great responses already, but let me add one more to the mix. My mom also lives in Darien and has very limited cash. So I trust her judgement when it comes to service people if she recommends them because a) they do a good job for her to WANT to recommend them, and b) they are reasonably priced. Anytime she needs anything done with her car, she takes it to the service station on Rte. 83 just south of the stoplight at 67th Street (I believe that's technically considered Willowbrook). I don't know the name of the station, but it's in a little strip mall with an oil change place. If I can find the name of the place, I'll get that to you, but you can't miss it. She raves about their service and honesty. It's worth a try - just see what they say!
It has been my experience that the dealer will not give you the run around, will only find legitimate problems with your car, and will get your car running for the lowest possible price. My experience with mechanics is that they always find thousands of dollars worth of stuff wrong with my car and then suggest that I donate it (and then I take it to a dealer and it's a 200 dollar issue). Dealers are accountable to their parent company, mechanics aren't accountable to anyone.

My experience has been that dealers charge more and happen to find "little problems" here and there that adds up your bill. You need someone who can tell you straight up, "you need to repair this now but this other thing can wait 4 more months". You know? I go to a place called Pongs. It's on Clark St. near Wrigley Field. May be too far for you but he's really honest and has been with my family for years and years. Good Luck.
