Yesterday my 2yr. old fell off the couch and busted the inside of his lip, it stopped bleeding a minute later but it is swollen and fat and looks like an open gash. today about a half hour ago my three year old bumped his lip and it bled again. What do I do? I've heard that it's not a place they stich, so what are the other options? How do I keep it from being infected.

What can I do next?

fairly recently my 2 year old did the same thing. hs tooth went all the way through. It was horrifying. bled like crazy !! I took him to the doctor and learned that 1) they do not stitch there 2) there are so many blood vessels there (that's why the lips are so red) that they tend to really bleed and 3) because of all the blood vessels and some other nutrifying bacteria present on the lips it will NOT get infected. My sons turned white, like an open gash would, and swollen and just aweful looking, but it healed pretty quickly too. Also, it didn't seem to bother my little guy too much. Not near as mch as it bothered me to look at it ;-).

My son no more than two months ago had an exact same problem but different style of getting it. I was so worried I did wait in the emergency room because it was caused by a dog bite. They actually did give him stitches because it was so large and deep. My son chewed the bottom one off in one day and the second one off in 6 days. Yet when I was in the ER the doctor on staff was explaining to me how quickly and easily the mouth heals. He also mentioned that the mouth has natural enzymes that help with healing. The best thing you can do right now is wait. it took maybe three whole days for the unsightliness to disappear and a total of five days for the the cut inside to be unrecognizable as anything other than his lip.
Good luck!

Hi Momma-
If you can get him to sit still long enough, super glue will keep it antibacterial and closed. It sounds a little gross, but my husband and I swear by it. I have used it on my face, hands, feet, my husbands knucles (lost a large chunk of skin- filled it in with layers of super glue and it healed like a charm)....
The thing is that the lips will heal themselves without much interferance, it is just a slightly more painful and ugly process. You can also get him to put carmex or balm on his lips regularly to keep the skin moist and thriving, so that when it does scab up, it won't split quite so easily. And don't (if at all possible) let him pick the scab in any way.
Hope this helps

If the gash is very deep it may require stitches. However the mouth heals quite fast and the chance of infection is low. WHat does help mucus membranes heal very fast is hydrogen peroxide. THis would be hard to do for a 2 yr old and it doesn't taste good, but it works wonders for children and adults alike (great for when you bite your tongue/cheek etc). Gently dry the lip if possible and apply peroxide with q-tip. Let it fizz as much as you can. Rinse it since he is a child. Do not ingest. Give him a reward that tastes good like a piece of fruit or a chocolate chip, since the peroxide doesn't taste good. Do this twice a day and it will heal amazingly fast! Popsicles or ice cubes can keep the swelling down it he'll use them.

ouch! If the gash remains open or wont stay closed, then you need to call your doc for instructions. They will most likely send you to ER. They dont do stitches anymore on lips - they will clean it and close it up with surgical glue and it's not painful at all. When my little guy was 2, he got bit by a dog and this was what happened to him.
