Hello moms,

I need some help. Have any of you ever gotten mold around your windows from condensation sitting on the ledges? I never have until this house which we had build and have lived in for almost 2 years. I am cleaning everything with bleach water but I was not sure what to do then. Do we run a dehumidifer? Is there something wrong with the windows?

Also everyone in the house has been feeling a little under the weather. We have a 3 year old who is prone to breathing issues and a new 3 month old baby which now I am very concerned about. Could the mold on all the windows be making us sick?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated

Hi A..
Our home is new construction as well. OUr windows were wet the first winter we were there. I was told it's normal.
This is the moisture draining out of the brick. Sometimes we put a towel by our windows to catch the water and we run our fans on the winter setting.

We just had a house inspected, and the inspector pointed out that black window mold is hard to avoid. Having a humidifier too high makes it worse, but condensation will happen anyway. It is not a bad window, nor are you doing anything wrong.
I researched the toxicity of such mold, since I figured if I have to live with it, might as well find out how bad it is. It's not terrible! Whew! While drywall mold can be toxic...
I just cleaned my windows with bleach. It helped but I could not get all the nooks. I have severe breathing problems, plus a baby...but it's not from a little black window mold. We just rented here and it came with the house. So, clean the best you can.

I have had a little mold on the window where we put the air conditioner and cleaned with bleach. It stays clean until the next year. You might want to have someone come in to check out all the windows to make sure everything is okay. Especially with 2 little ones and existing respiratory problems.

run a dehumidifier and air purifier with hepa filters. and call someone for a mold inspection to check the air quality and check the windows. we had a similar prob around a sliding door in our master bed (and in our basement from a water leak). had no idea it was mold, turned out it was inactive, but was told it bc something was sealed properly so a lot of moisture came in.
anyways, the mold inspector told us the best thing to do interim was to run the dehumidifer AND air purifier.

Turn down your humdifier. There is too much moisture in the air. We try really hard to keep on top of this. Use the fan in the bathroom when showering/bathing, pull back the curtains and/or raise the blinds slightly to dry out the window condensation. Wipe the windows dry when you see the moisture.

We, too, bought our house new. I think it's just a sign of good quality windows (air tight) that keeps the air within your house allowing no air leaks.
