We have found out that we have a bad leak in our shower and now we fear that we may have a mold problem in our house. Has anyone ever had a mold inspector come out to their home? Any recommendations or has anyone been through this?

What can I do next?

You can buy the mold test kits at Lowe's and Home Depot to determine the level of airborne mold that can cause health problems, which can be many. You can also buy a more expensive kit (several hundred dollars) that you use to collect samples when you vaccuum. Here's the info on this test by a doctor that has pioneered a treatment prootocl for patients exposed to mold: http://www.biotoxin.info/MoldTesting

Bry-Jo Roofing and remodeling is experienced in mold remediation (Note: we did not use these folks for the remediation because we were too dumb at the time to know the importance, but I have spoken to the owner of this company and they have done alot of work on my own home for other things). It is very important that any remediation be done properly and you should be aware that doing it improperly can dramatically increase your family's exposure to mold toxins.

There are actually 3 ways in which mold causes health problems: 1. allergic reactions 2. colonization of the fungus in your body (systemic and organ specific) 3. the toxins produced by the mold are minute and can impact the brain (and thus the nervous system, which is why they're call "neurotoxins"). My family was severely impacted by mold from a roof leak and a plumbing leak. I would recommend your family not be in the house when any work is being done and don't return to the home until after you've repeated the mold tests IF the amounts are found to be above normal. Some folks will tell you that the health concerns are over-rated, but what they don't realize is that 25% of the population has the genes to be made very ill from mold as their bodies don't properly recognize the toxins and thus don't eliminate the toxins.

Like the doctor (Shoemaker) in the link above for the mold test kit, I have no financial interest in any of these companies, I just want to make sure that no one elses families have the severe health impacts my own family had from mold exposure.

I own a carpet a cleaning company, and we are IICRC certified, which means we've been through training and we are Water Restoration Certified. I would not contact the insurance company right off hand, Texas is anti-mold when it comes to insurance. Most of them don't inlcude it in the policies anymore due to the big black mold scare about 10 years back and unreputable companies ripping the insurance companies off and tearing up homes. There is mold test kits you can purchase online (do a google), I've also seen some at Home Depot. They are supposed to be pretty accurate. Read your policy to see if mold is covered, then contact your agent. The reason you should do it in these steps is you want to protect yourself from the insurance company trying to protect their pocket book. If it's not covered, you call the agent, they send out an adustor, and it ends up not being black mold and years later you change insurance companies and this company happens to cover black mold, and the other insurance company has a record of you complainng about mold, even if it wasn't black mold, you can forever have the insurance companies exclude you from being covered. From what I understand. Mold is a 4 letter word to the insurance industry, and they will do anything to dodge that bullet. Test it yourself first and then go from there. In our training we learned that very rarely is it really black mold.

Well i had this problem last year when i lived in some apts and they refused to do anything bout it, You MUST constantly be on phone with Homeowner's association, city inspector, housing authority etc. Take lots of Pictures, get involved with what the process is thru TAA. There is a disease called Mestheleomia associated with mold, I may not be spelling that right. My daughters father was in Mold Remediation so i did alot of research on this. I hope this helps you.

You could try contacting an insurance company and ask them who they might use on flooded homes. Also try a home inspector company. I know they sell the machines online. But they are really expensive. Like $5000.00+ range. If you can see were the leak was or can access it start spraying it with bleach to help. Hope this helps.
