MIRENA While BREASTFEEDING?

I got the Mirena IUD when my son was almost 9 months old, and I noticed no difference in my milk supply. My understanding is that because it is localized within the uterus, the amount of hormone released is much lower than with other hormonal birth control methods. Good luck!

I had the Mirena put in at my 6 week follow up. My OB assured me that there was SO little hormone (and it basically stayed in the uterus -- his words) that breastfeeding would be just fine. That was a major concern for me, too.

I never noticed it affecting my milk supply and nursed my little guy for 14 months.

I had it inserted at my 6 week check up after my second daughter was born. I nursed her for a year. I noticed no difference. I had no birth control after my first daughter, nursed her for a year as well, and the milk supply seemed the same between the two times.

I had it put in at my 6 week checkup after my son was born. I nursed just fine for a year! I don't know if it was a combo of mirena and breastfeeding, but I never had a period while I had the mirena:) Even after I stopped nursing, I still didn't get a period (it was about 8 weeks after having it removed before I got my period again, and it took about 3 months before I got pregnant again). My 2nd son will be born in 6 weeks, and I plan on getting Mirena again after that!

I inquired about Mirena and my Dr. said that the best choice for me was a progesterone-only hormone pill. Mirena is a synthetic hormone. I have friends who have them and who are just fine, but I am fine on the pill. I think it is your call.
