Mirena I.U.D. and Pregnancy

I have been trying to make a final decision after the baby is born in early October- tubes tied or I.U.D. however the more I read about the I.U.D. the more it seems not as guaranteed as the commercials and doctors speak of. Have any moms gotten pregnant off the Mirena?

What can I do next?

I had Mirena and got pregnant and had a miscarriage. A close friend had Mirena and got pregnant and had a miscarriage/stillbirth at 24 weeks. Her baby had down's syndrome so it is unknown if Mirena was a factor in the loss. I also had serious side effects while I had Mirena. I have since had a healthy baby and had my tubes tied. No issues there.

I had some bad side effects with Mirena. I bled for 2 months straight. I had it put in at my 6 week check-up after my son was born. It was incredibly painful.
Have you looked into the Depo shot? It's an injection you get every 3 months and many women don't have a period at all after about 6 months of use.
I love Depo; that's what I'm on now. You don't have to remember a pill every day. It does take a while to get your fertility back after going off it, though.

If you don't want to get pregnant, why not get your husband on board to have a vasectomy? I just found out quite unexpectedly that I am pregnant with my 4th child. We were done with 3 so imagine my surprise. It wasn't a pleasant one. I researched getting my tubes tied and found that there are risks for gaining weight (if that is a concern for you) and that tubal pregnancies are possible.

I have Mirena and, no, I have not gotten pregnant on it - if you definitely do not want anymore though i would say have your husband get a vasectomy - it's a quick procedure with less healing time than it would be for you to get your tubes tied

i got the mirena put in 6 weeks after my son was born. it was fine at first, but then i started experiencing horrible side effects:
dizziness,
couldn't lose weight (i was up every morning at 5:30 at the gym, eating right and taking good care of myself, so i was doing everything right)
my periods lasted for 2 weeks straight, sometimes longer.
depression/over emotional
anemia

so i got it taken out after having it for a year and my side effects were gone within a week.
but... i didn't get pregnant on it :)

you might not get the symptoms i had on it, but if you do get the mirena and experience anything like that or that's abnormal for you, then you're not going crazy! i thought i was going crazy and that something was wrong with me. my doctor didn't even think it had to do with the mirena until i actually got it taken out.

on the pill now and i love it :)

I had Mirena after my third child with no problems at all. I got it removed later so we could have another. I did get pregnant while on the pill after my second child. I don't know anyone personally who has gotten pregnant with one, I've only heard that it could happen, like it does on the pill.

Get your tubes tied! If your decision is final, why mess around with it anymore? I have a friend who is now pregnant with her third child...with the Mirena IUD still in there. Make it official!!

If you are thinking about getting your tubes tied, which is permanent (whereas an IUD isn't - I believe they only last for 5 years) - have you thought about Essure? I have a friend who did this with absolutely no regrets. It sounds a lot less invasive than getting your tubes tied.
