Well after listening to everyone on here and doing my own research, I think I will try this. She wants to give it to me because I have extremely heavy bleeding and this has been an ongoing problem. I'm on birth control pills right now, but I still spot constantly with them. So this is not so much for birth control (since I can't conceive anyway due to PCOS) but more for hormonal control so I don't bleed so much.
Thanks and I will let you know how it goes.

I have a close friend who used this, and after 2 years of having this it in they decided that they would try to have a baby due to a medical condition she came down with. She was told before it was removed that there was pretty much no way possible in the 3-5 months after having it removed that she would conceive easily. She was pregnant 3 weeks after having it removed. The doctors were amazed.
My advice to you would be that it is great she loved it when she had it in , she never had any problems and it made life much easier for her and her mestral cycle as it might for you also. But when removed please keep in mind that pregnancy is very quick as in her case and others she has spoken to about her situation.
GOOD LUCK ,and I hope it helps if you get it.

I've had the Mirena IUD in for the last 5 years...I'm getting it replaced in Dec. I found that my period was really irregular, but not in a bad way. It got really light and sometimes was just a small trickle for a couple of days then done. Other times it would be heavier for a couple of days, then trickle for 5 days. Sometimes it would be so light I didn't even realize I had it. And my cramps (which were really bad before) were totally gone. And most importantly, I didn't get pregnant. Other than that, I forget it's even there. I've had no other side-effects or symptoms of anything. It's a whole lot more convenient than remembering to take a pill or pulling out a box of condoms and my insurance paid for it so it was free, too. All in all, I'm happy with it.

M. - I would highly recommend it. I was like you at first, I was so nervous about getting it. I went on-line and read horror stories about people that use it. Of couse, that only made me more nervous and I nearly canceled my appointment. However, I have since realized that a lot of what you find on-line is only the negative. I have now had my Mirena IUD for four months and am very, very happy. I was having a lot of heavy bleeding after having my child two years ago. It was so bad that I could not leave the house. Since getting the IUD, I do not even get a period at all. Once a month I may have some light, and I mean light, spotting and that's it. As far as side effects, I have not had any. I had some slight cramping the first couple of weeks, but nothing since. I read horror stories about weight gain, hair loss, acne, everything and I have had none of those. In fact I have lost 8 lbs since having it put in. Of course, I have been trying to lose weight, so it is possible to lose weight and not gain weight with the Mirena IUD. My last word of advice is to at least try it, I highly recommend it! Worst case, it doesn't work and your doctor will remove it at anytime if you are not happy with it. Good luck!

I have used it before. I no longer use it now. Had it about 4 years and loved it. I had no worries, no PMS and no periods. It is uncomfortable/painful when they first insert it. It was a little painful the first few weeks. I think until your body gets used to it but then after all that I had no problems. The only side effect that I had which later I found out was from the IUD (after some research)was that you may get sun spots. I did and it is due to the hormone that is on the IUD.
Anyway, I hope this helps :)

Hi M., Okay I am using it and had it inserted in March of 05. I absolutely LOVE it. I had a little bit of cramping the day i had it put in, nothing major, I just kinda took it easy. The benefits, besides the obvious( No unwanted pregnancy) Uhhm I haven't had to plan anything around my period, vacations, weekend plans, etc. I haven't gained any weight from it, and I never had any kind of headaches, etc from it. I have 2.5 years left, and I will probably just get another one, I love it that much. Good Luck to you. C.

I am currently on the Mirena IUD and have been on it for over 4 years now. It has been working great for me. I love it! I guess it depends on who you are also because my sister was on it for a couple of months and developed a cyst on her ovary but they are not sure if it was caused by the Mireno or not. Hope this helps!

I am a first time mom @ 37. I decided NOT to get the mirena IUD because I had been taking the Depo shot which has the SAME HORMONES as the Mirena. It made me feel depressed from time to time which isn't like me at all! I didn't want to have hormones in me that I couldn't stop without having it removed. So I opted for the Paragard IUD.
I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING A DEPO SHOT A COUPLE OF TIMES TO SEE HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL. It didn't seem to affect me at all until the SECOND month each time. If it doesn't bother you, I'd go for it because it is smaller than Paragard. The paragard made me bleed right away and gave me Bacterial Vaginosis which isn't pleasant. I just got this IUD so I'm not able to give good feedback on that just yet. The paragard was the only non-hormonal option for me short of "getting fixed". There are always condoms but that's what I was using when I got pregnant in the first place! (I am pleased even though it was a suprise.)
Have fun with your little one and good luck with your choice!

Hi M.,
SOrry this is late getting to you. I had the Mirena IUD inserted in January 2006 and for 6 weeks straight I bled a really heavy period and I gained 20lbs. I had the IUD taken out and the bleeding stopped and so did the weight gain. Unfortunatly I still have the weight though. I personally wouldn't reccomend it but if you have had good success with other forms of birth control in the past, no excessive weight gain or anything then go for it but it was a disaster for me.

I must be the only one who had this problem, but I hated it. I had it in for a year two years ago. I KILLED my sex drive and when my hubby and I would go for it we had to use tons of lube because it hurt so bad (I was very dry). I kept hoping this side effect would go away because I loved the birth control aspect. Finally after a year I had it taken out and have gone with the ring. I think the ring is great and I won't ever use any other birth control. Good luck! I hope you have a better experience than me. It sounds like the odds are in your favor.

I've been using Mirena for about a year and a half now and I haven't had any problems with it. The only side effect I know of is my lack of periods. I'll spot for three, maybe four days every two or three months. I love it because it really takes the stress out of birth control. I was on the pill for a while and I didn't always remember to take it everyday and I was on the shot for a while too and that really screwed up my hormones... I couldn't lose weight (in fact I was gaining about 10 lbs every 3 months), I was always breaking out and I would have hot flashes sometimes... it was horrible.

I have the Mirena IUD, and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it. I never even usually have a period. I spot maybe a few days every couple of months and that is it. Sometimes I might have a little cramping when I am supposed to be cycling, but no other issues. Half the time I forget it is even there. This is my first time using something like this, I have always used birth control pills. I wish I knew about this stuff back then. Good Luck.

Hi M.,
Congratulations on wanting to know the information before making this decision. It's so important that we keep ourselves well informed because often times the doctors give us one side only of information. I encourage you to get all the "good" and "negative" information and then you will at least be making an "informed" decision. Know how it works, why it works and listen to what it's made of etc.
I will keep my ears open for part time work for you. What kind of work do you want to do? Whta is your small business?
I love networking, and sharing good information with others.
So let me know and we'll see how it all works out for you!
Please keep in touch......I bet you are loving you time with your precious little girl!
Take Care

I've had a Mirena IUD in for the past 3 years and I LOVE it. I haven't had any problems with it. The worst part was the first couple of months after they insert it and you have "spotting" for like 6 weeks. My periods are almost nothing -- this will vary from woman to woman but it's a really great thing.
I believe it is just minimal homones. I am unaware of side effects.. well unless you count next to nothing periods :-)

Just want to let you know that as a contraceptive, the Mirena IUD (and also the pill) does allow conception to happen, and then prevents implantation. So many moms have a moral issue with this, but are unaware that that is how the IUD works. Just wanted to throw that out there to make sure you are making an informed decision.
For PCOS there are several great books out there on modifying diet and lifestyle to help with symptoms. You might check some of those out as a few simple changes can make a huge difference.

I had the Mirena installed at my six week postpartum visit, and I love it. I was very nervous at first, but it's been six months, and I haven't had any problems. the first day there is alot of cramping, but after that you won't even know it's there. And best of all, I haven't had a period. every once in a while I get a few hours of spotting, and that's it. I've used depo-provera injections and the pill in the past, and this method is by far my favorite.

I have been on it for two years now and have had no problems at all. It's great! I had side effects from the oral contraceptives that I was taking prior to Mirena, but all of those symptoms disappeared after I switched. I had tried Depo shots as well and they were horrible! They made me gain a LOT of weight and have headaches and depression. Then the pill started giving me hot flashes after my 2nd child. My doctor prescribed several different brands and each one gave me hot flashes. I was at my wits end when I decided to get Mirena. It's been wonderful and I have had no more hot flashes, no weight gain (in fact, I lost weight), and no other side effects. Another plus is that my periods are super light - most of the time, light enough for liners only.

Hello,
I am using Mirena IUD and I have not had any problems. In fact I have had it for 11 months now. It is nice because I don't have a period, just some light spotting. I think main reason I like it, is because I don't have to remember to take a pill or to go to the doctor every three months. I have not had any side effects. You also don't have to wait a year or two to have another baby, like you do when on Depo.
Hope this helps.

I have the Mirena IUD and I absolutely love it!!! I was on the pill before and took it religiously because we wanted to wait a few years before starting our family. However, nine months and two days after our wedding - our first little girl was born. Six months after that, again - on the pill religiously, we got pregnant again!! At this point - I was terrified of getting pregnant again so soon. I talked to my doctor about birth control. I was definitely not going on the pill again - because it did NOT work for me!!! I asked him about the IUD - I have had it for a year now and I LOVE IT!!! I don't have to worry with taking a pill everyday or anything. And to borrow my doctor's words, "You are a safe date as soon as you leave this office." It was NOT painful having it put in - it felt much like a pap test. You can get it for 5 years. There is also one with an added contraceptive. That is the one I have. I have had absolutley NO side effects - only the security of knowing that I will not get pregnant - oh and did I mention that I have a ONE DAY period every month that I only have to wear a liner??? You don't have to use anything other method of birth control (condoms, withdrawal, etc). Of course, as with any other contraceptive, there is still a risk of getting pregnant. That is even written on the Mirena pamphlet. I wish you the best - and hope you find what you feel comfortable with!

Hey!
I had it for about a year - til I got pregnant! It was great with no side affects............ I missed a few periods and figured no biggie as they said that could happen....... The DR.'s were suprised - and about three of them all tried their hand at trying to find it (fun!). They think it may have come out in a heavy blood clot or something. So - keep in mind that the low percentage of those ladies conceiving in those "statistics" could be you!

Hello, I have Mirena and I had it put in July of 2006. I LOVE it. I didn't feel very well the first day I had it put in but I haven't had any problems with it since then. I don't really get my periods anymore which is nice. I will sometimes see some light spotting and thats all. The only thing that we had to have done to it was the strings were to long and during intercourse hubby could feel them. I highly recommend this product. Hope this helps

Hi Merilee,
I have had the Mirena IUD for a little over 2 years and I absolutely love it. I spotted for the first couple weeks but since then I have not had my period and I am not complaining:) I have not had any negative side effects from it and would recommend it to anyone. I am a horrible pill taker so this works out perfectly. Everybodys bodies are different so the nice thing about the IUD is it can be removed at anytime.

I have had the mirena for over a year now and love it!!! After being totally surprised to find out i was pregnant with my 2nd son while on the pill I knew after he was born I had to find another approach! The IUD has been great...no pain when they placed it or anything. Some women do have cramping right after placement and occasional for the 3 months that follow. I remember one month I had what I felt like was cramps so I'm not sure if it was that or just my regular cycle. (2 advil and it was gone!)
The mirena is great for women who have already had a baby and either don't want the hassle of a daily pill, or monthy ring, or 3 month shot. 20% of women do not have a period after 3 months of having it in.
My reasons for chosing the pill included....1- I had already gotten pregnant once while on the pill! 2- who wants the hassle of taking a pill everyday, going to the pharmacy every month? plus our insurace deductable for prescriptions shot way up...we were paying over a dollar a day for birth control!3- with the exception of my $20 copay for the office visit, my insurance covered it ALL 4- After researching the Deproprovera shot I learned that women who have been using it for an extended period of time are showing a loss in bone density, this is almost doubled for women who use the shot over the age of 40.....I'm a woman...osteoperosis is enough to deal with in that department...5- It can remain in place for up to 5 years and easily be removed if you chose to become pregnant again.
I can tell you that you will have to go in for a fitting where they take measurements and then have you back I think a week later for placement. Nothing terrible about it.Felt just like I was having my regular papsmear. I then returned 6 weeks later for them to do their final check to be sure everything was in place, etc. I have been for my 1 year regular visit at which time they check it too. Everything has been great! No pain at insertion, very few days within the 3 month time span where I had any kind of cramps, and no more periods! (No more tampons!!!) I was a bit leary (I guess resonably so after becoming pregnant with my son while on the pill!!) at first a there were a few months I convinced myself that I was pregnant (due to the no periods) and bought a pregnancy test. (negative!)
Be careful as you research this online....It is NOT the old IUV that gave women a lot of problems. I found some websites where women swore it made them fat, crazy, etc etc. You can find anything on everything these days. I would research the sites that count such as medical sites and official sites. Remember that products such as the mirena undergo rigourous studies and saftely tests before they are able to be distributed. I swear some of those sites had women saying they had bad luck once they had the mirena in and as soon as they got it out they won the lottery or something!!! Just be smart about it and do what is right for you!
PS I'm glad that you didn't have your tubes tied as this is not very healthy for a woman. Also they are now saying it isn't that healthy for men to have vasectomy's.....darnet!

My sister and I have both used the Mirena IUD, and we had very different results. For me, it has been great. I have not had a period - at all - since I went on it. Other than that, I wouldn't know it was in. When I first got it put in, I thought it was falling out because the string was starting to poke out (and that is what happened to my sister, so I was very nervous about that possibility). But they did an ultrasound, and it was in place, so they just trimmed the string. After that it was fine. I've had it in for a year now, and I really do like it.
My sister, on the other hand, had cramps and blood and it finally worked it's way out of her. Her doctor told her that was very unusual.

I have it for 4 years now and it was the best thing i ever did in referance to birth control.
The only side effects i have is a very light period, so light i only need a pantiliner....no more tampons or pads...YEAH!
No cramps either. I used to suffer really bad and now I don't.
Some women's cycles cease, but i still have one monthly. It last about 5 to 7 days but it is super light.
Great birth control. They replace it every 5 years and you don't feel it at all while inside you and you forget about it.
You just have to get it checked on your annual visit.
My hubby feels it sometimes when making love, but it doesn't bother him or hurt him at all.
