I got the iud June 4th and for the first 2 1/2 - 3 Weeks did great light red tint when I wiped is all, then steadily bleed for about 10 Days, now for the last 5 or so I have Dark Brown stringy blood. I went in for my check up on July 1st Doc said everything was good and in tact. No need for other measures. Now for the last few days I have been extremely fatigued, dizzy, horrbile gas, and not feeling good in general. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced these symptoms and for how long they lasted. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey Ladies I called the doctor today she said she thought I was dehydrated?! Does this sound right?! I do live in So. Cal but I don't know. What do you all think, she said they could take my blood to see if I am anemic. And that I do have a urinary Tract Infection based on the test results they got back from my urine sample I had left when I got checked at 30 days? I am confused!

Hi Kristen,
I just had the Mirena inserted a couple of weeks ago during a hysteroscopy surgery~ I had (a) uterine polyp(s). I also had a D&C. My bleeding started off as the light pink tint like you described and it has gotten heavier, darker brown to red, and I also have had the stringy stuff you have mentioned, too, in addition to light clotting. I have noticed that I am more tired, I've been itching all over, my skin has not been doing that great, and I had several days where I was nauseous all day no matter what I did... it gave me bad memories of the HORRIBLE morning sickness I experienced with both of my children. I did experience gas for the first week as well. My lower abdomen still feels very tender and sore to touch, and if I do too much walking, or am on my feet too much, I start to hurt and start bleeding heavier. I am not sure if this is due to the surgery or not, however, either way, this shouldn't be happening.

Prior to my having the IUD inserted, I went to WebMD to check the Mirena out. I read all the reviews the women had posted and made a very clear decision that I WAS NOT going to have this thing inserted as all the side effects and horror stories they told of scared the hell out of me! I spoke to my doctor about this. She's been putting these things in for years and years (& has one herself) and hasn't had anyone come back to her with the problems I brought up to her. Perhaps the trouble lies in the person who inserts the devices? I don't know... all I know is that after I decided against this, I changed BCP again. For well over a year, NOT ONE type had worked for me. This seemed like the next best option and since I was having surgery, and I DID NOT want to be awake during the insertion, I opted to give it a go. I hope it doesn't turn out to be something I regret. As far as the symptoms you're feeling, I think perhaps you might be fatigued due to the length of time you've been bleeding and just that hormonal shift in general. Have you had a blood test at all? If you continue to feel this way and you don't end up getting sick (something is going around), I would have your doctor call an order into the lab for you and have everything checked. Maybe you have a certain vitamin defiency due to the blood loss, for example. There are always other factors to consider in being tired, of course. But if your life has not changed significantly, then you need to go back to your doctor or find a better one who will listen to you and regard your concerns.

I wish you all the best. I hope you start to feel great and really end up loving this thing!!! :)

In Light,
Jennifer

When I had mine put in, I didn't experience any side effects. My periods slowly started disappearing, to the point where I just had a little spotting, just enough to let me know I wasn't preggo each month. I don't think you should be having such strange symptoms, so definitely call the doctor again. Don't let them make you feel like you don't know what your talking about. You know your body better than anyone, and go with your gut feelings!

If your doctor is not listening to you, see another doctor, we know better than anyone else when something is off with our own bodies. Talk to your doctor and if they still claim nothing is wrong, get a 2nd opinion!

i had mine removed about a year after i put it in. i eventaully lost my period...all was great..and all of a sudden i realized i hated how i felt and that it might be realted to the IUD. I felt so different...not myself...moody, grumy, easily irritated...just major PMS. I went online and researched it and found I was NOT alone. SO MANY people had bad experiences with it. So, i saw my Dr to take it out...she said it really is prob not he IUD and that i might need meds so tel call her if ther was not change. here I am 2 year later with e PARAGARD IUD (copper w/o hormone) and all is good! I think the no period thing messed with me. It is not normal to not have a period! If you feel off...TRUST YOURSEF and look into it. THe paraguard s GREAT...sure...I have my period but so what...i've had it my whole life! The first 2 periods we rough with cramps but then that all ended.
Good Luck

Hi K.,
I had the Mirena IUD for a total of 14 months. I had troubles from the get-go. Lots of bleeding, irregular spotting...my periods NEVER went away, like you hear about w/ other women. I had three uterine infections (Endometritis that were Strep B positive)...it was a real bummer. I got so sick of it, as did my husband...we decided to have it removed, and one romantic month passed and we were pregnant, we now have a beautiful 7 month old daughter added to our family! As far as you are concerned, you should check your temperature and go back, complain, see a different MD if necessary, you may have an infection. Don't mess around with this, it can make you very ill; also, I have heard some scary stories of the uterine wall being punctured during insertion, please go get re-checked. If everything were perfect, you should feel totally normal by now, your period bleeding should be getting less and w/in 3 months "should" taper off. I never normalized and had spotting all the time, and every time after sex....what a drag. Take care of yourself, an undetected uterine infection can make you very ill and negatively effect your reproductive organs. Best wishes!

oh also, the doc can perform an ultrasound to check the placement of the IUD, they need to check to see were the top of the IUD is, just checking for the guide wire/strings isn't enough.

I got the Mirena March 6, 2008. I had mild bleeding for about 10 days as well and then a little bit here and there. My best friend is an OB/GYN and she said that it takes about 3 months for your body to adjust to it and then everything should be smooth. She says that in some women their period goes away altogether. Unfortunately, that has not been my situation...they've very panty liner light. However, you know your body better than anyone. If something doesn't feel right, please go back to the doctor.

IUD's are scary, horrible things in my experience. Mine slipped through the muscle wall and I had to have emergency surgery with an ectopic pregnancy also(baby lost).
Are you preggo?
See Dr again. I dont mean to scare you but these are facts. Be careful.

I had spotting my first three months and then nothing. I stopped having periods altogether. I just had mine removed, my five years were up.

I had a similar problem with extreme fatigue and not feeling well just in general. I also felt like I was going to jump out of my skin. My doctor asked if I may be depressed and although everything was going great in my life at the time, I couldn't figure out why I would be depressed, she prescribed an antidepression. The medication made me feel 100 times worse and I stopped it and made the decision not to have a different one prescribed. A couple weeks later I started my period and after felt better. I kept the IUD then because I thought it must have been a fluke thing. I liked the convenience.

These same symptoms started again a few months ago. I decided to have the IUD removed because I was almost at my expiration date anyway. Once it was removed again the symptons disappeared and I was my normal self. My doctor said that this could not be from the IUD. But after my blood work came back with everything normal had no other explanation.

I will be interested in seeing how others respond because I was curious about IUD effects also. I hope it works out for you. I am back on the pill.

I've had my Mirena IUD for just over 1 year and absolutely love it. I dont bleed anymore, but do experience the emotions that go along with what would be my cycle. I would give it time, it really is fabulous. The only drawback I've noticed is increased adult acne, something I'd rather deal with rather than take a pill everyday. Plus, the two could be totally unrelated. The FLU is going around. You may be stressed, or overwhelmed, or none of the above. In either case, give it a little time. My body completely adjusted by the 7th month.

Good luck!

You don't mention whether or not you have a fever - which would be the definite indication of an infection. I would definitely call my doctor again and describe very specifically what you are experiencing. And if you have a fever I wouldn't let them put you off but demand an appointment. It could be unrelated or just your body adjusting but you don't want to mess.
