I got the Mirena IUD at mu 6 week postpardum check-up. (my daughter is 1 now)I love it. When I first got it there were a few positions that were slightly uncomfortable. But that kind of went away. Between then and now, there are sometime when a position almost hurts, and other times the same position is fine. Mt husband told me 3 or 4 times that he felt it poke him. But recently (lthe last 2 months) things are becoming a little more uncomfortable again. My husband says it has been better for him, btu worse for me. Could it have shifted? Is this normal? I'm looking for other peoples expierence if this is a normal thing with the IUD. i do nto want to go to the docotr and have him say it's supposed to be like that, get over it.

What can I do next?

I've had the mirena for 11 months and so far I haven't noticed any discomfort. My husband hasn't mentioned any discomfort either.

I just had the mirena taken out. I did not have the problems you are having however I did read alot about it and talked my doctor before having it put in. It can move in such a way that it will cause discomfort. You should talk to your doctor so that he/she can look and see what is going on. Don't know if your wanting to have more children; but I had the mirena taken out and got the NovaSure done. NovaSure is where they go in and burn your lining so you no longer have a period at all. It may be an option for you. I know for me I was having abdominal pain issues and since I have had this done I not only do not have a peroid but I have no more pain either and I have noticed I my moods have gotten better.

Hi Jennifer,
I have Mirena and I love it! My doctor told me that if my husband could feel the strings, I should go in and have them cut shorter. It's not a big deal. But if YOU are having discomfort, you should definitely go in and have them check it out. It is not normal for you to feel anything. I'm sure your doctor wouldn't tell you it's normal and to "get over it." If he did, I would absolutely find another doctor! Good Luck! I hope everything is ok. Keep us posted! (And disregard others' unsolicited Natural Family Planning bs! People need to stick to the topic and keep their birth control opinions to themselves!)

Yes, of course, it could have shifted. IUDs have been known to come out entirely, partially and through the uterine wall. It may just need to be re-seated by your ob/gyn. Do not accept pain as 'normal'.

hi, i also got the mirena put in at my 6 wks check up. all of my problems were before they cut the strings shorter. when they did that i didnt' have any poking problems at all. my hubby at one point could feel them but he hasn't said anything in awhile. i would call your doc and maybe get an appt. maybe it moved or isn't in right. but you shouldn't feel anything unless your trying to feel the strings. good luck

i don't know if my neighbor had Mirena, but she was taken to the hospital to have her appendix removed. At the same time they found that her IUD had pierced through and they took it out at the same time. She had no idea. You are feeling pain so I would definitely go to the MD.

Hi Jennifer ! I have had the Mirena for 5 years next month and i have had no problems. The IUD i had before, my then husband was sensitive to and I had to have the string cut so it would not irritate him. I personally have not had any issues. It should be smooth sailing for you so share your discomfort with your physician.

Have you ever thought about natural family planning (NFP)? It is 99% effective if learned and used correctly (like the pill!). My husband and I used it for 25 years and taught it to other couples for 20 years. It is amazing to see the female body work like it is designed to do. Fertility can be seen as a blessing to be worked with! A woman is not fertile her whole cycle. NFP teaches the couple to learn when this time is and abstain from relations if they are postponing pregnancy. It also tends to increase communication between husband and wife and places the responsibility of married love on both spouses, unlike most birth control which puts all the responsiblity on the wife. And of course there are no negative physical side effects. See www.ccli.org for more information if you are interested.

Hi Jennifer... Many years ago, I also used an IUD, but I'm not sure of the maker. My experience with it were similar to yours. Sometimes I felt it was poking me, and twice I had to take it with me back to the Dr. to have it re-inserted. My
climaxes/muscles involved during our love making, forced it out. So after the third time, my Dr. said it probably wasn't going to work for us. So after our second child, my husband opted for a visectomy, which was a simple proceedure for him and a success for both of us.
I'm not a Dr. but it sounds like it might be traveling from it's intended area, but only he can tell you for sure.
Hope that this is of some help to you.

I have an IUD too, I have had mine for 4 years now. Mine was uncomfortable for awhile and there are some positions that we do that it still hurts, but its not like it a painful hurt its just like a cramp, If found that if you try to move a different way to make it stop. In the beging it hurt alot more, but I noticed that the less that i had a period the less that it hurt. As of know I haven't had a period in the past 2 years. The only time that it really hurts is when I am bloated a little from when I should be having a period and I don't. I hope that Is a little help for you.

I am an OBGYN nurse, and the mirena should not be uncomfortable to your partner. Have you been back to Your doctor to have placement checked? We usually advise this after 1 month. (or now if you haven't been) It may be as simple as having the strings trimmed, and they should have informed you how you can check placement. I do think your discomfort needs to be evaluated.

It sounds like you have the same problem I had. It turned out to be an infection. I went to the doctor and they gave me an antibiotic.

You should not be able to feel the IUD at all. If you are having pain you need to go to the Dr. and get an ultrasound. IUD's CAN poke through the uterus.

I have the Mirena IUD, and have had it for almost 5 years (times to change it). You should not feel it at all. Your husband may feel the string, but he should not feel the IUD. You should not feel anything.. If you are concerned that your doctor may tell you to live with it, go to a different doctor in that practice, or a different practice altogether. You should be comfortable all of the time with your IUD, that is the beauty of it. Don't wait!

I have 2 friends and my mother that have used the IUD, and have experienced a lot of discomfort. The ending result, after speaking with their Dr.'s was to have it removed, and get on another method of BC....so you may want to? You shouldn't have to be uncomfortable.

Take care, Best wishes.

Neither you nor your partner should be able to feel the IUD. The threads only should be felt. I think you need to see your doctor and have an examination. It may have shifted and may need removed and another inserted.

Why would your ob/gyn give you the IUD at your 6wk pp? Your suppose to be 12 wks pp before you have an IUD inserted. Maybe that's why it has shifted. Please contact your gyn/nurse to find out why they did this. If they can't give you an answer ... find another doctor.

My husband has said the same thing! I have been into the OB to check it out a couple of times and each time she says that he shouldn't be able to feel it and that it is in the right place. I don't really know what to believe, but I do love not having a period and not having to take a pill :)
