Mirena and Spotting

I have a question about and spotting when on Mirena. I know it is common for women on Mirena to not get a real period and have spotting, but i'm not sure what is normal. For the first 3 months on it (I've been on it for about 7 months) I had no period and no spotting. Then around months 4 I started to spot. Now I get spotting every week to 2 weeks. I was just wondering if this is normal or if anyone else has had this happen. I'm just not sure if it's something I should be concerned about or call the doctor about. Thanks in advance for any helpful replies : )

What can I do next?

That's been very similar to my experience with it! I've had mine for almost 3 years. The first 2 years were that...spotting every 4 weeks, then 2 weeks, then back to 4 or longer...nothing consistent. Then all of a sudden, I had heavier periods, now nothing again!

I think it's pretty normal, but if it's making you crazy, call your Dr. I really think it's probably fine though. But if you have any big changes, make a call.

How long does the spotting last? I definitely had weird spotting like that as well. I absolutely hated the Mirena, so I hope that you have better luck than I did!

I spotted from it since day 1. I will go a week without anything, then spot for days. I really hate it, but I don't have much for an alternative. I can't take bcp's because of my bp, other methods with too many hormones make me real nauseous, so I'm staying on this. It is so bad I wear a mini pad every day just so I don't ruin underwear. My ob/gyn said most people settle down with spotting after a few months. She said it wasn't harmful, but annoying. She recommended I try the copper iud, but I haven't gone yet. I don't think it is anything bad, just kind of annoying. Call you dr if you want to be sure.

Hi C.,
I've had my Mirena in for 3 years now and am sad that I only have two years left with it. I will definitely get another (unless hubby gets snipped instead). From the very first day it was "installed" I never had a problem and in fact by the end of that office visit I even forgot it was there. Never a spot or any irregularities ever followed and I am very happy with Mirena!
I do suggest that if you have any concerns it's probably best to make a quick office visit with your OB.

Same thing is happening w/ me right now!! I've decided i dont like an IUD (ive tried the Paragaurd too - Hated it) So I have an appointment next week to have the Mirena removed and go back on the good ol' BCP ! Good luck :-)
