Ok moms, I got the Mirena about a month and a half ago. The pamphlet and doctor said that there might be some unusual spotting, etc. for the first 6 months but it is like I have been on my period for 2 1/2 weeks now! I went to the doctor last week and told her that I had been having an unusually long period and she just shrugged it off! So I;m wondering if anyone else has the Mirena and has experienced this?? Also, the last few days I have started to feel a slight pain once I finish urintating??? Any help??

Thank you moms!

I'm on Mirena also and yes, it feels like my period has been extended and going on and on. It has gotten better and now I'm not spotting very much at all. It does get better, and hopefully it will get better for you too. My period has gotten lighter and easier to manage.

When I hold it and don't use the bathroom right away, I do get uncomfortable and feel a little pain. I haven't felt the pain after urinating though. If it continues or gets worse, I would tell your Dr.

I got it about two months ago...i spotted for about a week after i got it. When my cycle started this month it has been a constant light flow for about 3 weeks or so.

The doctor told me that this could happen and to expect this for the next six months until my body regulates itself. She said some women just cant deal with that and dont want to wait for it to regualte and have it removed. It dosnt bother me any i will just be patient. i am looking forward to my cycle to disappering all together!

Just give it time.

As for pain when urinating...none.

I read the brochure of side effects...there is a possible risk of UTI. I suggest going to your Doctor (not obgyn) and have him check you out.

It's been a while since I had mine put in (over 3 years ago). But I also remember an unusually long period, maybe 3 weeks or more. Since then my periods have become much lighter, just minor spotting for a day. I haven't had any other problems since then and enjoy not having to think about it anymore. I would give it at least a month or 2 before deciding it's not going to work for you. I've never had any pain while urinating, so that may be a concern.
Best of luck to you.

Hi S.---

I had my Mirena inserted in November and I had my period on/off again for about 3 months. when I went in 4 my 30 day check up to make sure everything was still in place I mentioned it to my Dr and she said that yes you will have unusual spotting sometimes extremely heavy and sometimes just tiny dots. It sux bc u have to wear pantyliners all the time and u just feel icky bc u feel that u are gross all the time! But it does go away. I was worried but after talking to my Dr who actually has mirena as well as most of her nurses I trusted her and sure enough my spotting went away. She also told me that what the iud does it rids all of ur uternine lining so that is why u tend to flow heavily and then stop for a while and start back up.
Hang in there. As far as the pain I didn't have any pain or discomfort except when it was actually inserted, but my dr advised me if it became unbeareable then to go in and schedule an appointment bc it might be that the iud possibly slipped and might need a gentle push back up. But i had like 3 sonos per my dr request bc she wantd to make sure it was in there.

I got Mirena a couple months ago while I was on my period. Other than minor menstrual cramps I haven't experienced any pain or longer than normal periods.

At first I had a long period too. Now, I haven't had one since 2004- literally. :) I'm in the 5% or whatever, but it sure is nice! However, at the beginning it was the longest period ever it seemed!
