Morning Ladies,

I have been puzzled for about the last two years. Each month when time for my period I catch a cold. I catch it either the week before, after or during my period and when my period is over it goes away. I take multi-vitamins and I am a pretty healthy person. Since I know this will happen I call myself taking extra measures like being vigilant with my multi-vitamins, I will even take a double dose of vitamin C during that time, drink tea and so forth, but nothing helps. I know our immune system is weaker when it is time for our monthly cycles, but this just seems so weird to me.

When I ask different medical professionals no one seems to know why. Have any of you ever experienced this and if so what have you done. "Boy...the things we women go through!"

Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi ladies, I am still suffering but my doctor recommended taking a Vitamin D supplement. So far it hasn't worked. Why do us ladies go thru sooooo much!

Hi K C!

You know, I had the same problem in high school, and a few years after that as well. (Somehow, it went away.) Back in high school, my mom called my doctor's office and explained the situation. The nurse HAD heard of this, and she told my mom that around "that time of the month" (before, during, and right after my period), some women tend to have low iron. They never did any testing or anything, but she told my mom to get me some iron pills, and I had to take one every day during that time. It worked, and like I said, somehow I grew out of it eventually.

I don't know if you should just start taking iron pills before you do some research or talk to a doctor about it. I know now that getting too much iron isn't good for kids, but am not sure about adults. But maybe this is something you could try suggesting to your doctor's office and see what they say? I guess it couldn't hurt, right? Good luck!

Question whether it is really a cold (virus) or an inflammatory response toyour hormones. If it could be an inflammatory response, some things to try are an anti-inflammatory diet, or a pain reliever that is anti-inflammatory, like naproxen(Aleve). Try it when you think your symptoms start, or when you think you are ovulating, and see if that helps.

Wow, it's great to know that I'm not alone. About a year ago this started happening to me. Don't know the reason. I just try to head it off. I take a tylenol cold and sinus or something like that. It usually nips it in the bud. I usually get the daytime/nighttime combo pack. Pretty effective.

you are exhausted and stressed out at times. wear a mask when u go in public during these times. use hand sanitizer. wash your hands and face when u come back from going out in public. The only way you catch a cold is from exposure to the virus, and a weakened system. Ask your doctor for some anti anxiety medication for pms.

I'd get some nasty headaches. I could tell what was coming if the head started hurting. It was like I was 'allergic' to periods or that it was a hormonal induced headache.

Well it was. my progesterone was off. So maybe get some progesterone creme and rub it in somewhere on you. Or wild yam.
Your hormones are off balance.

I used to have this problem, too, but my PMS symptoms changed after two kids and being on birth control pills. I am no longer on birth control pills, and I do get cold-like symptoms a week to 10 days before my period, but they're never as bad as a full-blown cold. I seem to recall that the problem is similar to what happens to some women experience (I have a friend who felt like she had a cold the whole time she was pregnant) during pregnancy-- the mucous membranes swell up and make one feel congested. I don't know where I heard this or even if it's true, but it could be a starting point for more research. PMS is a strange thing, and in my experience, symptoms can change over time. I do know there is a PMS diet that is supposed to help with symptoms, but I have yet to try it for my own PMS symptoms. Good luck!
