I am about to buy a twin mattress for my almost 3 yr. old daughter. I want a middle-of-the-road, firm mattress that will last several years. Any tips, pointers or suggestions? Any brands you love? Brands to steer clear of? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Amazingly, we found a cheap one on Walmart's website! It shipped for $.97 and it was around $100. It came rolled up with the air sucked out if it! When we cut the plastic, it instantly fluffed up! It's firm and comfortable to sleep on, there are many nights I'm in with my toddler:(. We've had it for 1 1/2 years and it's still good as the day we got it! Good luck!

We bought memory foam mattresses for both of our girls at IKEA! The price was reasonable (as with all things from IKEA), and the mattresses are quite comfortable. For our bedroom, we bought a memory foam mattress from Costco (the Novafoam mattress). Wow, SO comfortable (and I think it was $800 for a CalKing - vs. upwards of $4K for a Tempurpedic).

I just bought new mattress, to be delivered tonight. Mattress Firm allows 100 days to sleep on it and if you don't like, it can be returned and get another for 100 days. Good warranty and also have payment plan if necessary.

However, if you are buying for a little child, I would not think you need really high end as it should be good for a long time. Be sure to always use a mattress pad/protector, saves the life of mattress and turning or rotating about every three months also extends the life. Personally have had better satisfaction with Sealy lines, just got rid of Serta that had less than 2 years and it retailed over $1500 new.

So many mattresses are designed for "wearing out" and recommended replacement in 8 years, not flippable, so you will keep having to buy more. Our society has become so "throw away", to drive the economy but that's another story in itself.

Not sure about brands, but I'm a little hesitant about the discount mattress places. My mom has had really bad luck at those...........just not lasting. Ask the sales person for their opinion. I know when we bought our 4 year old a bed they told us nothing too firm since he is still growing so they showed us two they thought were good, nothing outrageous in price.

Don't get a non-flippable O.! We made that mistake for my son's first mattress and he's 8 and can use a new O.. Get the most decent ($$) O. you can afford.

The best mattress in our house is from Original Mattress Factory.
There aren't sales or gimmicks there.
Decide what you can afford and buy that product.

Just asked this question a few weeks ago re: the original mattress factory ( asked if they were any good). Based on the replies we ended up getting the middle version of the middle brand. It was $341 for both pieces. They seem great so far. People advised me not to get their high-end.

Well, we are on our 2nd Sealy, in about 4 years. We bought one, and the middle had a big sag in it. Got another one on warranty = big sag again. We thought we might try a memory foam one next time. And the Sealy we bought was about $1500 so it was not a cheapy.

Every mattress store, it seems like, sells mattresses by a different 'name'. It makes it really difficult to compare apples to apples when comparing prices.

I would simply suggest this: do NOT get the cheapest mattress you find. Get one that has something to it. A $200 mattress will sleep like a $200 mattress. And then, after a year or two, it will sleep like a $50 mattress. Yes, she is small now, but when she is 6 yrs old, she won't be so small. Go for something higher quality.

We just bought a $500 set (full sized) for my daughter... "discounted" to $400. It is a FABULOUS mattress. The $300 set (twin) that she had before was fine for a 3 yr old (which is how old she was when we bought it). But when she started to grow, it didn't hold up. Yes, she ended up getting 7 years out of it---but we should have replaced it sooner than we did. If we had bought better quality to start with, she would still be sleeping on it. As it was, when we broke down and replaced it, it felt odd putting her back on a twin bed at 10 years old. So we bought an entire new BED, so that we could put her on a full. An extra $100 now will be worth a lot more than that in the wear throughout the life of the mattress. Trust me.

We bought our mattresses and Verlo and I'm thrilled. They make them for you, so you know you aren't getting one that someone else returned.

Good luck.
