Between you and Rachel I am freaking hungry now!!!!!
So going out to lunch!!
*pouts*
I am going on a cooking spree this weekend!!!!!
My men went Empanadas for dinner tonight...I've never made them from scratch before...
I've bought them pre-made and baked them. However, at our local Mexican restaurant I know they fry them. I plan on filling them with beef and cheese...
I've got a recipe for the dough...have you done it yourself or did you buy something like the Pillsbury crescent dough?
Did you fry or bake your Empanadas?
i know people put chocolate in them as well...
what do you use to make yours?

The authentic way to cook Empanadas is to bake them and then fry them. Baking cooks the dough, frying adds the crispiness. If you only fry them you risk burning the outsides or undercooking the insides.
You can put chocolate in Empanadas... heck, you can put anything in there. Beef, onion and cheese is pretty traditional and needs no chocolate!
They will not turn out quite the way you've had them in restaurants if you use crescent roll dough or filo dough (especially filo). If you have time make the dough from scratch, if not any prepared dough will be fine... pizza dough works the best if you're buying premade.
Oh man, Jo and I were just talking about this, LOL!!...
She swears by filo dough, and now I want some, and I'm hungry...
So when are you cooking, when's dinner? ;)
WOW! Now that's a dinner! I think it would be better with a pie like dough. To get the best goodness out of them you must FRY them!!
Many years ago I made a cajun version using the cajun turkey injector spices and ground beef. They were yummy! I used the crescent dough and fried them.
Once again I wish this site would allow pictures so we could see your goodies!
Blessings!

I buy premade pie crusts. Unroll it. Use a small saucer to cut circles. Biscuit cutter to make appetizer size. Fill with whatever, fold over, crimp with fork. Small Slit for steam to escape. Brush with egg wash or butter and bake. Sometimes I do a quick fry to add that extra bit of pop and sprinkle a little seasoning on top. I've done asian, tex-mex, caribbean, and cajun varieties. I try to come up with a dipping sauce when I make them as well. Like maybe a cilantro lime sour cream for the tex-mex, terryaki for the asian, cajun remoulade, etc
I make mine with maseca (the stuff you use to make tortillas) and fry them. I fill them with either chicken or beef and/or beans.
I don't make them myself....but here's a good Facebook page for authentic mexican food:

I've only had them at On the Border and Taco Bell :). So I say you send me the recipe so I can make those too since they are AMAZING!!
I have made chicken ones from scratch. This is approximately the recipe I used for the dough - http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Empanada-Dou...
Pretty sure I baked them but it's been a while. Great idea though - maybe I'll do them for dinner tonight. Yum.
I made the sweet ones with apple filling, the dough i used flour tortilla recipe just add more baking powder and cinnamon. i bake them. never tried food tho. sound delicious.
My husband makes his from scratch, but it's truly an all-day affair & starts with yucca root. Here's a link to a bunch of recipes & step-by-step instructions: http://latinfood.about.com/od/appetizersandsnacks/tp/empa...
