I see Beth Howard at the Journey Center for some other issues (my ex is an alcoholic) so not sure she would be right for your situation. You can try Bay Laurel Center. They have several therapists there. You should be really proud of yourself for taking the first step (knowing you need some help). And hang in there. Getting a counselor helps soooo much.
First, K., let me applaud you for realizing that you need some help right now with all the things going on in your life. That means you are willing to do what it takes to feel better and to ultimately take care of the growing blessing you are carrying. I have had bouts with post-partum depression before and was able to get through it by sharing my feelings and thoughts with close family members and friends from my church, but that is not always enough. One of the things you may have already done is to tell your OB/GYN doctor that you are having depression and ask for ways to cope with it and for a referral to a qualified counselor who specializes in pregnancy-related depression as well as marital counseling. Depending on whether your husband would be willing to see the counselor with you or not is something that only you will know, but what would be good is for you to invite him to go with you for your OB visit where you mention to the OB that you are having depression. This way, your OB could validate that depression is a real thing that can happen to you during pregnancy (and after) so that your husband won't think you are just making it up or that you are looking for his sympathy. It may also be a wake up call for him to realize that he should be more concerned about you and your baby's well-being. I know that I am not telling you anything earth shattering here, and I don't know of a good counselor as I have not had therapy myself to be able to advise you on this, but I do know that it is important to address it right away and not let it go any further. I would like to encourage you to call your OB's office today and ask for an appointment as soon as they can see you to get the help you need. Also, as the Christmas season is in full swing, this too may have a depressing affect upon you as it does for many people. There are no formulas or finite answers to make it all better immediately, but the fact that you are doing what it takes to get through your depression is a major thing. I noticed that in the "A little about me:" section you wrote "Not much!", but I would really like to counter that by saying to you that there is a great deal of wonderful things to say about you. You are a caring, expectant mother to be who wants what is best for herself and for her family. Always remember that you are important and needed by many and that God made you in His image to be a beautiful and integral part of this world! Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to wish you well and to congratulate you on your pregnancy. Best wishes and many blessings to you as you find the joy and peace that you are seeking!
K.,
I am new here as well, so I can't refer you to a counselor. But I can share with you how I've found help before. The biggest help to me was a lay counselor at my former church, who met with me weekly for free. She was trained in biblical counseling, and we prayed together. We met for a about a year, and that was the biggest help to me that I've found. I don't know if the church I go to now (Crossroads Community Church) has any counselors, but it is full of wonderful, mature people, and I bet they could direct you to some help.
Other times, I've found counselors through employee assistance at my husband's work, and my health insurance. You can also talk to your ob/gyn or midwife and tell them how you are doing, and see if they can help.
I strongly recommend getting a doula. Having a listening ear and support person through your pregnancy can be very helpful.
I am proud of you for reaching out and asking for help. We all need a lot of people around us, and I would encourage you to open up to your friends and family and let them support you.
