I'm 22 years old and my husband and I have been trying to conceive for about a year now. I recently went to my OBGYN for abnormal bleeding. My periods become regular for awhile, and then they go abdormal for about a year. We aren't sure what is wrong, but I'm going to get tests done. My OBGYN said if we can't figure this out, we'll have to look at the options and see if I'm even able to have kids. Well after talking to my mom about it, she said when she was 4 months pregnant with me, until 8 months, her DR. had her on Turbutaline. She said she always wondered if Turbutaline would have any effects on me once I was born. Nothing was thought of it until now. Does anyone know if Turbutaline can cause infertility issues with the baby?? I know nothing about Turbutaline so I'm not sure if this is even possible. I'm getting tested for Thyroid problems so we'll see how that goes. Any help would be great! Thanks!

You need to be checked for PCOS as well as thyroid issues. Good luck!
I doubt it but if you want to check it out just do a search on Turbutaline sideeffects or turbutaline infertility and see what comes up. It's an asthma drug that anymore is more often used for pregnancy problems than for asthma.
Terbutaline is still used today to prevent preterm labor by stopping pre-term contractions. It is in Pregnancy category B and considered safe for mother and fetus.
HOWEVER, there have not been enough controlled tials and studies to examine possible complications in the fetus and long term effects. As a matter of fact there are NO drugs at all at should be considered perfectly safe to use in pregnancy for lack of scientific studies. Even when drugs do not have any immediately harmful effects on the fetus (as in birth defects), we are just beginning to understand how certain chemicals effect the genome by turning genes off and on (a field of study called epigenetics).
Chances are that the Terbutaline is not to blame and hopefully you doctor can determine what is going on.

I would check with a fertility specialist ASAP. Charles Miller in Arlington Heights is fantastic, and gave me results in a few weeks after another so-called "specialist" had told me there was no chance of conceiving!! He would be able to tease out what your issue might be. His staff is wonderful, too.
I really don't think turbutaline would be an issue. I think before you get to worried you should see a fertility specialist and not your OBGYN. Not that ob's dont' know anything, but they don't know much about fertility issues. The most they know how to do is perscribe clomid...after that I would not get treated for infertility by an OB...and I struggled with infertility for 2.5 years. It could be something really simple like your thyroid being off with the hormones it secretes. Honestly, if you have insurance or can afford to, I would get a work done by a reputable specialist and go from there. Your really young, so I really believe they should be able to help you.

Terbutaline has been shown to have some possible links to autism, but nothing like you are talking about. It is a smooth muscle relaxant that is often used to relax the uterine muscles, but it is an off label use (not approved by the FDA).
