Has anyone ever taken the "family" to Vegas? Is there much for kids or is this more of an adult scene? Never been there so I don't quite know.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You Everyone!! We are going to consider this trip and do some research. We've done the Myrtle Beach trip and to be honest even though that is suppose to be a family get away I would not go to Myrtle Beach again. I absolutely hated it. I would have had more fun going to the Jersey Shore...but that's my opinion. We'll see....we may hold off on Vegas and try something else but I was just curious since I've never been to Vegas. Thanks again for all the ideas...I didnt know there was so much to do there!!!

You can definitely take kids to Vegas. I haven't done it yet (my kid is only 2), but even as an adult, I noticed A LOT of things for children. There are the lions at MGM, the Bellagio fountain show, the pirate show at Camelot (??), the huge aquarium at Mandalay Bay, magic shows, the amusement park at NY NY, etc. Probably every one of the newer hotels has something the kids would love. Some, like the lions and the fountain show and the pirate show are free. Oh, and you can go check out the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the desert too; those are all pretty close.

I never took my little one to Vegas, but it really is geared more owards adults. However there is the pool that all kids love. I believe also the MGM hotel has a park rides inside it. It really depends on the age of your children. We just went to south beach. It was geared more towards adults, but between the beach and the pool, my 3 year old was very happy. Good luck and have fun.

My husband and I love Vegas. We were just discussing to go again. We have a 3 year old son and have decided NOT to go. Typical day- walk the strip and go into the hotels (they are beautiful, go to the pools. Nice dinner than a show. You can not gamble with your child, you can't not go to the show with your child. So you end up at the malls, pool and a nice dinner. It is a lot of money to go there to just do those things. You can do that any where. You could take day trips to Lake Mead or the Hoover Dam (fantastic)but it does depend on the age of your family.

We have decided on Myrtle Beach. There is more to do there with kids.

We took our son to Vegas last year when he was 9 and we had a great time. We stayed in a hotel off the strip with no casino -- it was called the Desert Rose Resort and it's right behind the MGM Grand, one block off the Strip. There is really a lot to do with kids, but if you are gamblers that might be a problem. Kids can walk through casinos (and in many cases it's the only way to get someplace) and can eat at a restaurant inside a casino (again, sometimes the only way to get to the restaurant) but they aren't allowed to stop for more than 30 seconds to a minute or the Casino Control people will tell you to move along. So if you want to go out gambling at any point, you'll need to find a babysitting service.

That said, though -- we took our son to see the Cirque du Soliel "Love" show at the Mirage -- which, if you like the Beatles, is a blast! There are other shows at the major hotel casinos that are appropriate for kids too. Many of the hotels have attractions -- there is a flamingo and exotic bird habitat at the Flamingo, the dancing fountains at the Bellagio, the roller coaster at New York New York, the talking statues at the Shops at Caesar's, the goldola rides at the Venetian, the classic cars at the Oriental Palace, and the pirate show (which is a little bit cheesecake these days and not as much fun for kids as it used to be) at the Treasure Island. There are probably others I'm forgetting -- stuff at the Excalibur, for example. Also, just riding the Monorail around town is fun -- our son loved it!

If you rent a car and can get off the Strip, there are some hotels that are also fun for kids to take in -- the Rio has a Carnivale theme and has giant floats that go around the casino and you can watch from the balconies above. The riders throw Mardi Gras beads at the crowd and especially at the kids. Circus Circus has, of course, a circus theme and some kind of show.

There's also a lot to do in nearby towns -- we went up to Boulder City one day and took in the Nevada Railroad Museum, complete with a steam train ride through the desert, walked around in Boulder City, which is a beautiful art deco town originally built for the workers who built Hoover Dam and has no gambling, but lots of great charm and shops, and we went to Hoover Dam which was very educational. We also took a day trip out to Red Rock Canyon, which is a gorgeous place! Also, we took a quick ride to Henderson (one town away) to the Ethel M. chocolate factory, where they have a world-class cactus garden that is fun for kids. Also, off the Strip on Tropicana Avenue is the Liberace Museum, which is WAY cooler than it sounds -- the collection of pianos alone is amazing!

You can find things to do with children in Vegas. It's probably less child friendly than it was several years ago, but if your kids are older than toddlers there will be plenty of family activity to do.
