I had my knee arthoscopy on Dec 20th and was healing pretty well - they did put me on antibiotics a week later for a possible infection. Once I stopped those & got back to work I started to swell & returned to the Dr to find I do have an infection. I was ordered out of work for a week (that's up today) and my swelling and pain is no better. I'm a single parent and can't afford to miss more work - supposed to go back next Monday but I'm at a total loss on how to get through this! Any help/suggestions would be GREAT!

What can I do next?

My mom, my brother, and I have all had this surgery. When I had it 15 years ago I had crutches for 3 days and was swimming after a week. When my mom had it recently they did not even send her home with crutches. She walked out of the hospital on her own. There is pain and discomfort, as is with any surgery but you are in and out within the same day.

Hi,

I had this surgery done about 2 years ago. The surgery is fairly quick but the recovery took me about 2 months to feel somewhat back to normal. I did do physical therpy for about 6 weeks after the stitches were removed. (Orthoscopic is what I had I think that is what you are talking about) The one thing I would say that helped the best and hopefully they give you this is there is this knee brace deal that injects cold water through it using what looks like a drinking cooler! It was a life saver because there is a ton of swelling and it kept constant ice on it. Overall it is deff a worth while procedure though! The pain and discomfort I had before it is nothing like I have now. I did fly on an airplane 2 days after having surgery (wouldnt recommend it) but was somewhat mobile. Sorry not a ton of advice about it but i guess the biggest thing is just keeping ice on it as much as possible!

I'm sure that you'll get some more descriptive, first-person stories re: this surgery, but for what it's worth:

My husband had his knee scoped a few years ago. It was an out-patient procedure that took about 3-4 hours total, from admission to exit, and he was up and moving on crutches before the day was over. He took his pain meds for about 2 days after the surgery and then was fine, from a discomfort perspective. I think the physical therapy lasted for just a couple of months, and while he said it wasn't a joy to do, it wasn't bad, either.

I remember picking him up in the recovery room. The doctor came over and summarized the results of the surgery for both of us and gave us copies of the pictures of the inside of his knee (sort of a before/after thing). My husband, still recovering from the anesthesia, looked at them and said "Look honey, I have ovaries, too!"
