My daughter turns 5 on Sept. 26. 26 days AFTER the cutoff to begin kindergarten. The Beaverton (Oregon) school district requires early entrance testing (http://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/pdf/parents/parents_Kindy_...) performed by a psychologist and estimates the cost around $500. YIKES! I am looking for referrals on local psychologists and any experiences people have had with this type of testing. Thanks!!!

Edited on June 9 - Thank you for the responses. I actually have all the information from the school including a couple of psychologists. I am actually wondering about other psychologists in the area that might do the testing as well (and not charge as much). Additionally, I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone through this process recently. THANKS!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses. We have made the decision to move to Kindergarten after careful consideration and consultation with my daughter's preschool teachers. She is already ahead of her older classmates in reading, writing, and math skills. Her social maturity is online with a typical 5 year old. Having been in full-day preschool for over 2 years now and the fact that she is socially and intellectually ready convinced us to move to kindergarten. To let her birth date hold her back in preschool another year seems unfair and not in her best interest.

HI N.
I asked my daughter's kindergarten teacher about that as my niece turns 5 29 days after. The teacher sd the school could give me more info on the psychologists as well as what to expect, how long it will take, etc. Good luck!

I would call the school and the district officeand ask for referrals. I live in the same district but work for PPS and I know we provide lists or resources to families. Good luck!

I have not gone through the process but would like to give you my experience. My daughter's birthday is October 1st, also very shortly after the cutoff. I waited and placed her the following year. She is now finishing 4th grade and I believe it was a good decision. She is a leader in the class and developmentally ready for any lesson that is taught. I have seen younger kids struggle more. I am also looking forward to an extra year with her at home before she flies away to college. Good luck with your decision.

Just a question, why do you want her to start school this year? Why not wait? There are more ways to give your daughter opportunities than to start school early. Giving her outside activities to strengthen her body and mind in different ways will allow her to be more well rounded.

Let her be a little kid for a little longer.
