Kids and Losing Socks & Other Things

I know kids will be kids and they just naturally lose things sometimes or leave it over at friends' houses. My daughter has pretty much left almost every pair of socks she has at the neighbors house across he street. I kindly asked them to look for them and the Mom said they would and return the pair of socks that were my daughters. We have seen nothing. Her kids never seem to have shoes or socks on for the most part so I don't get it. I'm a bit irritated because I don't want to keep buying my daughter socks (Thank goodness Summer is around the corner). What do you do when your child loses something or leaves it at a friend's house? Do you have socks and other items that magically disappear like I do?

What can I do next?

My parents have a pool in the back yard and we always managed to magically get 6 to 12 beach towels in late August. We would ask around to return them at 1st but never did find an owner to any of them.

I would teach your child to put her socks INSIDE her shoes. It is what I have done and we never lose socks now (though sometimes the kids will insist on wearing the socks 2 day in a row...)

Hey K.,

I don't think the sock loss ever goes away. My boy is 14, and every morning it is a struggle for him to find socks. I just go to Walmart and buy jumbo packs of socks - always the same plain white ones - so it doesn't matter if he has 2 or 10 - they always match. I have no idea where they go - and I have looked in the laundry, under the bed, everywhere. The little rascals just up and run away on their own. LOL

When he was little he lost mittens/gloves constantly. Again, I just bought several pairs of matching ones at the Dollar Store and moved on. The only time I got really mad was when he went through a lost jacket phase in third grade. Luckily, most were in the Lost and Found at school.

I have always had him call or go back over to friend's homes to collect any items he left...his things, his responsibility to retrieve them.

next time daughter comes home without something, send her back over to get them right away.

what are they doing with the socks?

Hehehe, the socks may not be returning, because they may not be "socks" anymore...

All I can say is that although I took very good care of my toys as a child, I was terrible with socks. When my socks went missing it was because I had scissored them into outfits, scarves and blankets for my barbie dolls. My mom found about a dozen socks in my toyboxes, all "modified" when I was about 7 years old...

Just an idea...

I am forever losing socks, and my littlest one doesn't really go anywhere else!

If your daughter is losing socks, I'd ask her why she is taking them off and/or why she doesn't put them in her shoes. If she's old enough to go over there alone, she's old enough to learn to put her socks in her shoes for when she comes home.

For other things, I'm a huge fan of Mabel's Labels. They make a label for nearly everything - socks, shoes, bags, shirts...it really helps to keep kid-stuff straight, especially if they use similar things. I can't tell you how many kids use the same snack cups we do. Also, the labels can take a beating and look great.

I agree with the idea to have her put them in her shoes when she takes them off away from home. But there is something to what Pamela said also. My kids both (a boy and a girl) have used (and still use) socks for play things. I have found stuffed animals with all 4 feet in socks. I have found shoelaces pulled out of shoes used for "rope" to tie up various things or make spider webs or what have you. And my son always always always has singleton socks lost in the nether regions under his bed and in the bottom of the closet.
And even in the wrong dresser drawer...

The sock monster used to eat them in the washer & dryer at our house, but now we have new machines and they are not hungry! LOL!!!

Yes, items seem to disappear but I usually find them stuffed in a toy box or under the bed. I have even found socks on baby dolls being used as tights! The tiny dolls and Barbies have used them as sleeping bags!!

I TRY to get them to stop using the socks as play items and also TRY to get them to put them in the laundry basket in their rooms. Does not always work. My mom used to have us sort and pair them after they were washed. It made us really look for the missing sock!

Good luck and sorry for being silly! I'm just a little tired!!! Have a good evening!
