I'm just over 6 months pregnant and today my kidneys are hurting so badly. I drink heaps of water every day so i'm confused. I've tried to call my doctor but haven't gotten a call back, monday is her hospital day normally.

Anyway, i'm afraid to take anything without talking to her first but was hoping someone here might have a suggestion. Can i drink cranberry juice? or take the cranberry pills?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone. My doc still hasn't called back but I have my regular monthly appointment with her tomorrow so I will discuss it with her. I'm going to grab some cranberry juice on the way home :)

Its funny, I never paid much attention to the things I put in my body before I got pregnant, now i'm on the internet asking people if CRANBERRY JUICE is safe LOL....

Bridget, thanks so much for your concern. My doctor does have a nurse that about 90% of the time calls back the same day. Its odd that she didn't. I am like you, if they habitually didn't call me back, I would change doctors. Today is my appt and I have a tablet full of questions for her :)

The same thing happened to me. The pain got so bad I went to the ER. I was 8 1/2 mts pregnant. They thought I was in labor but I told them it is my kidneys. They kept me in the hospital and found I had kidney stones. I passed a few small ones and the pain was gone after about 12 hrs. I was fine after that.

If you don't get a call from your doctor today, you may want to go to an urgent care clinic, or to the ER. I went into early labor (at 6 1/2 months) with my first pregnancy because of a kidney infection.

Better to be safe then sorry and get checked out then to wait.

I had this problem with my first, and let me warn you, do not wait. If it hurts enough to interrupt your day, go to the emergency room. I was put in the hospital 7 times with this, and once it put me into early labor which they were thankfully able to stop. And I too drank lots of water. Cranberry juice does help, as does Azo if urination is painful. But there really is nothing that will make it just go away except for antibiotics.
Good luck!

I can completely sympathize with you. I went through tthe same thing in my pregancy. The drs kept telling me I must have a bladder infection but all tests were negative. When you are pregnant, the ducts to your kidneys open wider and becasue of limited space, fluid can back up into your kidneys causing pain or kidney infection without a bladder infection. I didn't get diagnosed until I was 7 1/2 months and unfortunatley, until I gave birth, there was a constant pain. I almost had to have my kidney taken out during pregnancy becasue the pain and stress were inducing labor automatically in me. They gave me a shot of something to stop the early labor, but I didn't want to take pain meds that could affect my son. Anyway, long story short, see a doctor. Ask questions about kidney infection and see what they offer. Twice I was admitted to the hospital and they flushed my kidneys through an IV. It made me feel better for a few days, but my son was big and he was pressing on my kidneys, too. It could be a minor kidney problem, but it could end up pretty severe, so be cautious and keep drinking that water. I know how hard it is to deal with that pain, I had my son almost 6 years ago and I can still remember how that felt more than my labor. Even if it is as bad as mine was, in four months you will see the reward you waited for and believe me, seeing your baby makes all that pain go away. If you keep having problems let me know and I can look over my copies of med charts to see what else they did for me. Take care and God Bless.

I drank cranberry juice when pregnant and had no problems, but I never took the pills. I would still check with your doctor though because bladder and kidney infections are common with pregnancy, and that could be why you are having pain. It could also be the way the baby is in your tummy, maybe putting pressure on your kidneys or something else in that area. See a doc to be on the safe side, they can tell from a urine test if you have a kidney infection. You could go to any doctor for this, not just your ob/gyn. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

I don't have any advice about what to drink or try. What concerns me is that you have a doctor who doesn't at minimum, have a nurse call you back with instructions the same day. Even when OB's are visiting the hospital or are otherwise unavailable, they generally call in to see if anyone has problems, or engage the help of another OB to take care of things.

Hi K.,

Are you sure they are your kidneys that hurt? Do you have history of bad kidney's? Or have you been diagnosed with kidney infections?

If you can find an unsweetened cranberry juice that you can drink plenty of. Drinking to much sweetened juice can cause you diabetes. Pregnant or not.

Home remedy: What you can do is buy some corn in the cobs and boil the cornsilk that's inside the corn husks. You can boil the cornsilk in plenty of water and drink it all day long. You will be urinating like crazy but you will be cleansing your kidneys out. Or if you know who owns a chinese plum tree (gives orange/yellow small balls of fruit and it has a bone in the inside). You can snip 2 med sized leaves and boil them in water and you can do the same drink it all day like water. And this too is good to cleans your kidney's.

Of coarse, I do highly recommend you getting checked out by your doctor because what if it's not your kidneys. Or if they are maybe you can get treated before you get an infection. The kidney's are very important and if you sense something is not right w/your kidneys you need to get treated because then they can go caput and then you will have to start on dialysis.

Well, hope you get better. And I hope these 2 remedies help you and give you some relief.

I knew of another home remedies for the kidney's but I can't remember right now but I will see if I can find it

Too much water is a bad thing, I always liked dried cranberries, we still do my 3 daughter's and I use them in salads, cookies etc.If you have insurance, call your health line and get advice from an RN or approval to go to the ER if need be

I agree to check w/ your doctor - I am sure it is nothing but I know when I had kidney pain that did not get any better w/ water it turned out to be a kidney stone - I doubt that is what it is, since they are rare in women, but to be on the safe side be sure to see the doctor so he can check you out. I also don't see how cranberry juice could hurt so I would drink that also until you get in to see him. There are now the "Urgent Care" clinics and they take insurance so if you can't get in to see him and are in pain, you may want to try that so you don't have to wait another whole day.

Good luck with everything!

Hi K.,

I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant and about 2 months ago I had a urinary tract infection. Of course it came on over the weekend so I couldn't get in to the doctor until Monday. I started drinking straight cranberry juice (no sugar or anything). It tasted terrible (very, very, very tart), but it made me feel much better in only one day. I still went to the doctor and got meds, but the cranberry juice helped a lot.
I hope you feel better.
