T.K.
A friend of mine just had pain in the back of his left side. It ended up being bacterial colitis. He thinks he got it eating some bad sushi. ANtibiotics cleared it up.
Perhaps it's a silly question..but how do I know the difference. I have never knowingly had problems with my kidney, and after some time with upper, left, back ache that doesn't seem to go away, I'm wondering if it's my kidney?

Kidney pain would likely be in your mid back, to the right or to the left. It's slightly higher than we normally expect. Are you having any urinary problems? If so, I would suggest going to your doctor. I might also try to find other solutions, are you straining that muscle in a certain way? Do you have bad posture? Is it a knot?
It could be a kidney infection or kidney stones or ????. I suggest that you go to the doctor.
I used to get kidney infections all the time (never a UTI). Kidney infection involves a fever and pain in the LOWER back, usually more specifically to one side. Plus, your urine would be very cloudy.
I thought my kidney "burst" one day, well, that's what it felt like anyway. Went to the doc and she said it was probably just a pulled muscle, and as much as I swore it was a kidney thing, she was right. I would suggest ice or heat (can't remember which is best!).
Kidney pain is in the lower back and because I have conic back issues I have a hard time telling if I have a kidney infecion or not. If you think it might be your kidneys there is a test you can get from CVS it test for nitraits and something else. Oval or something like that is the brand and its pee sticks. They work really good. You can probably ask the pharmasist if they have them.
Good luck and God Bless!
Just another thought - my friend is in hospital now with pneumonia. He had a pain in his back that was originating from his fluid-filled lungs.
i had what felt like kidney pain recently turned out to be a sciative erve inflamation.
Kidney pain involves the back, the side and down into your abdomen. You'll have issues with urination. Whether this means you have trouble peeing, it burns when you urinate, etc, you'll have some issue with urination.
If you're still having issues tomorrow, then get in to be seen. You don't want to let a kidney issue go for too long.
Kidney pain would not be upper back so I think maybe you pulled a muscle
or just moved the wrong way.
Are you having any digestive issues? My mother-in-law had her gall bladder removed a few months ago and I think her pain was in her upper back. It's likely not your kidneys. They're much lower in your body.
