Keeping Fruit Fresh

I am new in this country. My daughter loves eating fresh fruit daily, so we keep a lot in the house.
What is the best way to preserve grapes so they last longer? The best way to preserve bananas? The best way to preserve spinach or any salad greens? These all go bad quickly and I would love to hear of any tips.

I love Tupperware's FridgeSmarts. They really do keep produce fresher longer. I know I sound like a commercial, but they really do work! They're kind of expensive, but they've probably paid for themselves 3 times over with all of the produce I haven't had to throw out. I've had strawberries stay fresh for over 3 weeks and lettuce lasts about a month, just to name a few.

Here's the website where you can find them: http://order.tupperware.com/coe/app/tup_show_item.show_it...

You have to find a local sales consultant to order them, but you can order them online or through a rep. And they're guaranteed for life - if they ever break you get a free replacement.

I recommend wrapping the greens in paper towel & then putting them in a bag in your vegetable drawer.

I recommend the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator for your grapes.

I agree that for bananas, you have to buy them green. They ripen quickly.

My tip for bananas is I buy a bunch that is very green, then I buy 2 or 3 that is a bit green and I buy 2 that are ripe. If you look to the side of the banana display they usually have a few straglers. If not the stores never seem to mind if you pluck a little.

I agree with the poster who recommended buying a couple green bananas, a couple partly green, and a couple ripe. It is OK to separate 2 or 3 from a bunch at the store. I have also found that bananas keep a bit longer if left wrapped (or even double wrapped) in the plastic produce bags from the store.
For the other things, as everyone else said, don't wash until you are ready to eat.

I only know a trick for bananas. Wrap them individual in foil and put in a draw..it slows the ripening, and greatly minimizes the browning as they ripe.

Bananas keep fresh longer by hanging them up (as if they were still on the tree.) They sell little hangers in the kitchen section of Walmart and Bed, Bath, and Beyond or other kitchen stores for this. They are wooden and have a little hook to hang the bunch of bananas from.

Grapes can be washed and kept in a bowl in the refrigerator. They are also good treats when eaten frozen, but make sure you are slicing them in half for you daughter since they are a choking hazards.

For salads, we wash only what we need each time. I find that bagged salads go bad faster than if I buy a head of lettuce and keep it wrapped tightly and only slice off what we need at each meal. If you wash the whole bag or the whole head of lettuce and then refrigerate it for later, it will go bad faster.

My daughter loves fresh pears. They take a few days to get soft enough to eat, so maybe you could buy a few of these and let them ripen on your counter and let her eat the other things first, then you will have something to give her on the days when other things have been eaten already!

Apples keep for quite a long time too. You can leave them on the counter or put them in the refrigerator. If you peel and slice them ahead of time, you can put a little lemon juice in with the slices so they won't turn so brown, then store them in ziplock bags or covered bowls.

Also, any food stored with bananas will ripen more quickly because of the gas that bananas give off. You can ripen a fruit faster by putting it in a brown bag overnight with a banana!

Hope this helps!

Hi!
I keep my grapes in the fruit bin of my refrigerator in the bag with the holes that they come in. I always buy the greenest bananas I can find and then keep them on my counter. As for lettuce I put it in a Ziploc bag and then put that in my veggie bin of my refrig. For some reason it keeps it better this way!
