I just read that Katie Holmes has filed for divorce on June 28. Is anyone really surprised by this? I am not, every photo she is in, she looks miserable. I am surprised that she stayed with him for so long though.

Not proud of it, but I called it.
The moment she said she was pregnant, I thought, wait until she holds that baby and the baby begins to get pulled into Scientology. She is going to freak out as they take over her child's life.
It also sent up red lights that her parents really did not care for him.
He is an odd bird with lots of baggage. His father left them. The mom was in charge of him and his older sisters. Abandoned children usually really struggle with control in their lives.. They need to control everything and everyone in their lives.
He also has done whatever he has had to do to protect his persona.. even if it meant not being true to himself.
I also have theory.
People that are famous for something like acting, inventing something, thrown into the spotlight and then being successful at young ages.. .. Stay the age emotionally they were when they became famous and wealthy. It is as if emotionally they are stuck at that age.
Michael Jackson is a perfect example.
The exceptions are the people that continue their educations and are altruistic. They do not need that constant adoration. But there are a lot less of them..In the acting world.
Well, I think that celebrity marriages probably break up at the same rate or slightly more than the average marriage...we just hear and see about it in the public light. I used to love Tom Cruise....however I think that he has gone off the deep end in the last 10 years or so.
I totally called this one. Tom Cruise is completely fruit loops. (And a control freak...)
I feel really sorry for their kid.
EDIT: RE: Manda - She married him young. She didn't understand what it was all about. She was star struck, simply dazzled. "How bad could it be?" she must have asked herself, thinking that this religion couldn't possibly be the deal breaker that keeps her from marrying the guy she crushed on while while growing up. "I mean really, Jews marry Christians, Mormons marry Muslims... how hard could it be?"
Three years into the marriage and one darling daughter later, she realizes what she dove head first into, but alas she signed a prenup. She has to stay for at least five years or she'll be left with nothing. She sticks it out. Two years to go. Then one.
Years to be under his thumb. Years to be overshadowed and controlled. His rules. His way or no way. She wants to be called Katie. He doesn't like it and makes her tell people to call her Kate instead. Small injustices every day. She believes in disciplining her child. He does not. He constantly undermines her and lets their daughter get away with anything her heart desires. Trapped and waiting. Putting out little fires where she can but the day is quickly approaching when her daughter will be at an age where she'll be indoctrinated into the church and begin her training in earnest.
The five year mark arrives, the condition for meeting her marital obligation fulfilled, she serves him divorce papers while he is away filming a movie. Her escape is at hand and I, for one, am rooting for her with all my heart.
Run, little Katie. Run for your life and save your kid.
Not a shocker at all. Much more surprising were Seal and Heidi Klum and Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.
I read online that Scientology starts getting children involved at 6. (More like, taking over their minds.) That they were really putting the pressure on. Her daughter will be turning 6. I think she began to realize, that it would ruin her daughter. Take away the precious girl she loves. I would not be at all surprised if she has wanted a divorce for a long time, but was compiling documentation to prove he should not have custody. Who knows if any of what I've read is true, but it makes sense. It's one thing to be married to a guy believing that, it's another to begin seeing the cult wanting to take over your daughter.
Either way, sad for the little girl...but positive at the same time. That cult is scary.
I've never noticed another S. R on here! Howdy.
Guys, he's gay. For some backward Hollywood reason, he hides this for his career... and enters into contract with these women. They make big bucks. Think about it, what else did Katie Holmes really have going after Dawson's Creek? And why did he and Nicole Kidman adopt 2 kids then later have perfectly biological kids of their own, separately... they were not doing it.
And none of these women seem too torn up after they leave- Nicole kid man, Penelope Cruz.... and they Never Talk About Him again once they are done.
Is this a crazy theory? Am I alone here?
Good to really know *who* you are marrying before you walk down the altar-- or make a baby with them. Including the ins and outs of their faith.
I feel sorriest for Suri...for so many reasons.
Just to add a different perspective, Nicole Kidman has said in the past that Tom wanted her to be a SAHM, and often objected to her career during the marriage. Katie Holmes' career has also sort of stalled while married to Tom. Maybe it's nothing about Scientology or even how young she was (although that could be icing on the cake), but just different visions about a mother's role? Tom Cruise is certainly not the first man in the world to want his wife at home - and have her want more, and Katie isn't the first woman to think just being a mom might be enough for her and then find herself going stir-crazy.
But, just like the neighbors' marriage down the street, no one really knows what went wrong. Maybe they just fell out of love after so many years?
good for her! I can't stand him!
Jo - a 50 year old man can still look really good without plastic surgery if he takes care of himself. It's in your 50's that aging really takes place. You will notice big changes in Tom a few years from now.
I kind of have to stand up for him, I met him once in his Top Gun days, and he was unusually nice to me, nicer than most stars would have been. So I think he's a good guy.
However, Scientology has taken it's toll, and he does seem kind of controlling. My take is Katie grew up, and realized this all wasn't for her. None of us should get married in our twenties to someone almost two decades older.
I am not surprised. She has looked miserable for years. Scientology is crazy stuff when you do the research. Tom is a good actor but he is a weirdo. I hope she can get out and find happiness.
Scientology is freaky, no matter how you slice it.
I'm surprised that she made it this long....too bad they procreated.
And I can't help thinking that Tom has a touch of the "Little Man" complex going on maybe?
Anyhoo--the sun will rise and set tomorrow!
Katie's parents sure called it right. They knew it would happen.
Why now? I'll bet that Katie finally grew up and saw the light.
I'll bet he's miserable to live with...
Dawn
Totally not my thing (pop culture), but I suspected there was a problem when she didn't have any more children after Suri.
I also think she will have a heck of a fight on her hands.
I guess I am the only lame person that kept looking at the pictures on the reports and thinking how much plastic surgery does that man get on his face that he still looks 25 at 50! :p
I can't remember where I read it, but according to "unnamed sources", in order to get any money from him in the future they had to stay married for 5 years. His films are outstanding. My favorite being Top Gun ;), but personally he is a bit of a fanatic for Scientology. Being a Vet from the Navy and knowing that Scientology was founded my an ex-Navy person... well.. I would never be tempted in that direction I guess is the nice way to put it! I sure hope that Katie starts smiling again though... wow...she sure looked pretty upset these past couple of years.
Oh I totally think it's about Scientology. She doesn't want Suri going that deep into it. I'm sure she had thought about it before, but ya know before you have kids you don't really get it and now that her daughter is here, alive, well and almost 6 (the sacred age apparently) she realized she had better get her the heck out of there. Also, I'm sure she's learned a lot more about Scientology in the last 5 years and perhaps that has also influenced her decision. According to TMZ there will be some stuff coming out about why she filed in NY opposed to CA. At first they thought it was about custody but now they think it may be about tax issues. Hmm, we'll see. Either way, I'd say it's about time for poor Katie.
And SH...I was so sad about Johnny and Vanessa! :( I thought they had it figured out! I LOVE him!!!
I heard scientology people are crazy, not sure who can put up with their absurd beliefs for too long. She was young when she met him, she's had time to grow up and realize that not all that shines is actually gold. I am glad she can break free with no consequences (some groups don't even let their "victims" go), I am sure a big alimony/child support check will make her feel better sooner than many other divorcee moms without the same possibilities.
I work with someone who has a relative that's a publicist and you'd be surprised (or like me, not!) at how many of the so called marriages & relationships in Hollywood are fake. This one is not a surprise.
I just feel sorry for the kids that are a product of these facades. I'll take my "normal" life over what those kids are subjected to.
And, is anyone else surprise that his movie tanked? He is the last person I would've picked for that role. He has been a huge turn off since he went all "Scientology".
Tom might be pretty to look at but he seems hard to live with.
Good for Katie!
As for Johnny Depp - in some ways he reminds me of Peter Sellers.
Peter appeared on The Muppet Show once and he was joking around but he said something like "There is no me. There are only these parts I play." and it just struck me as probably the truest thing I ever heard about him.
Johnny is a great actor, but stability isn't one of his strong points.
A stable relationship and family was good for him,
Without them I'm not sure how well anchored he's going to be able to be.
Her contract must have been up!
Did you see the story that all of his wives left him at the age of 33 - he has had 3 wives? Very interesting. But I totally saw this coming...as did everybody else. I'm looking forward to seeing her in the movies again.
I actually like Tom and it should have come as NO surprise that he is deep into his religion. Additionally, it would seem even more odd if he had NOT told Katie from the get go that if they have kids, he would like them to be raised in the church. The Hollywood media tends to pick on Tom (I think because he is a Scientologist) and they don't subscribe to those beliefs. It's so biased out there ........... The reason they don't pick on him quite as much as other actors who aren't considered "PC" is because Tom pulls in the crowds.. That said, there are many stereotypes that people place on religion and its followers. I think this is less about control and or Scientology, and more about Katie met Tom in her 20s.... when you hit 30 and up.. you tend to view the world in different ways.. Maybe she is coming into her own.. therefore, whether it was Tom or whomever else, perhaps she'd still be filing for divorce.
Either, I think being married to Tom helped her career NOT hinder it.. Look at Nicole Kidman.. She wasn't that popular until AFTER she married him... I would also add that what I like about Tom is that he stands his ground, has conviction and in my opinion, seems like an ok guy..
this to me is just another divorce...
Yeah thats all about Katie being young and naive falling for that suave and chrming rman. You see it all the time. Plus the fact that Tom Cruise definitely lost his marbles a while back. Her parents saw it though. I'm glad she is trying to get out. She must be terrifed right now. Will he come after her will he stalk her. Someone mentioned his movies. Honestly I have not been interested in seeing his movies in years. I will not pay good money to see his movies .
Well and then Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis split up too.
Celebrities.... are just as fallible & imperfect as we regular folk are.
I might be alone saying this, but I am surprised. I, personally, like Tom Cruise~ I think Katie Holmes is the one that seems moody in general. Tom seems like he's enjoying life to the fullest. I'm team Tom :)
He doesn't even call her by her preferred name "Katie"...her calls her "Kate" and corrects reporters. Ughhhh!
I absolutely agree with Jo and the plastic surgery. He has done a bit here and a bit there instead of one big fix. He did more maintenance procedures for sure. Trust me, I'm too close to La La Land.
