My son and I just finished his campus visit to KC Art Institute. What an awesome school! They said his portfolio was "stellar." We are so excited.
Now we are planning the rest of the weekend. We are going to the Nelson-Adkins Museum in a little while. Then tomorrow we will at least drive by the new performing arts center (all tours are filled.) and see the Kemper tomorrow.
Is the National WWI museum worthwhile? Anything else we shouldn't miss?
What are the best restaurants? I like healthful food. Didn't like McCoys (son did) Had some awesome fish at the Beer Kitchen today.
TIA
V.

The Nelson Atkins is awesome. If you go down to Crown Center and stuff, Hallmark has a visitors center that is free and pretty cool. http://www.hallmarkvisitorscenter.com/findUs/

WWI Museum - haven't been there since I was kid but it was very cool, I think they may be under some construction in the monument so may not be able to go up in it.

DON'T miss Union Station...Crown Center (all righ there by the WWI memorial). And window shopping on the Plaza is awesome. We are the city of Fountains so even just cruisinng around the Plaza and down south on Ward Parkway you will see some great fountains and homes.

Food...well I know you said health food but you really shouldn't miss out on the BBQ, we are extremely proud here of that. Gates, Oklahoma Joes, Arthur Bryant...just look on any street corner you are sure to find one. Otherwise, we have all the usuals. Oh I know if you don't mind a bit of a drive there are two places...Strauds (not too healthful either) but FANTASTIC chicken. or The Jazz (cajun so not too healthly either)...maybe I'm not too much help in the eatery area. But those are my faves in order.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR SON!!!

I read about Hallmark having their design and art studios in Kansas city.

The TV show, "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" just did a show on Kansas City BBQ restaurants. "Smoking Guns BBQ", "Woodyard BBQ", "RJ's BBQ Shack" (Mission, Kansas), "Johnny's BBQ"

I've been to several restaurants featured on the show and all have been GREAT.

Good luck to you and yours.

Actually the receraunt in the nelson-Atkins is VERY highly ranked! I suggest there for a bite.

Also the steam boat arabia is awesome! You can check the times on the farmers market too, it really has great prices for produce and you used to be able to buy fresh roasted coffees and spices in bulk (this was 4 years ago so things do change).

The plaza is a nice walk and very pretty, there is a church down there that was designed by frank lloyd wright but I don't remember if it is open to the public (I went to church there a few times).

Yes, the WWI museum is worth a trip! Plan to spend a few hours there, so much to see. ETA: The construction is finished- all parts are open!

If you like museums, go to the Toy and Miniature museum by UMKC. It's right off of the plaza. You can try Axios, which is a wonderful little French restaurant in the Crestwood shops (which is also by UMKC).

Congrats to your son and welcome to Kansas City! Isn't it wonderful here?! Have a great weekend.

First, Congrats to your son! Sounds like the Art Institute liked what they saw.

Blue Bistro is about 17th and Summit, very near the new performing arts center. They only buy local and the menu changes daily depending on what they have available.

A fun experience for anyone, especially since you will be there tomorrow, Saturday, is the River Market Farmer's Market.

I agree with Aunt Mel that Unions Station is amazing and walking around the Plaza would be fun. Sad to say that I too haven't visited the WWI Museum since I was a kid.

Have fun and enjoy!

One of our favorites in KC is the Steamboat Arabia Museum. A pre-Civil War cargo steamboat that hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank. It was unearthed in the late 80's I believe, and they are restoring everything they can, piece by piece. No small undertaking considering there was 200 tons of cargo aboard. You will see things that you didn't even know were invented yet! We've been twice and still haven't seen it all. Make sure you go to the Plaza also. The architecture is beautiful.
