Keep your $800 and do it yourself! They cannot "fix" your credit. YOU owe the money and you MUST pay it back. Take that $800 and pay off some the outstanding bills. Dave Ramsey has some wonderful advice and you can get it several ways: FREE Podcasts of his show on iTunes, Money Matters book by Dave Ramsey, Dave Ramsey's daily talk show on Talk Financial Peace University.

You can do this!

Never pay to do this.

Think how far $800 would go to settling on some credit cards.

Start googling on how to best handle this. A good place to start may be Dave Ramsey site.

I have to disagree with the other responses. Depending on how old the bad credit is, paying them off can actually hurt your credit even worse. I paid a company $600 to fix mine and my husbands credit and I thougtht it was worth every penny. I didn't know personally how to do it myself. But they managed to get almost all our old bad credit hits off our credit report and that allowed us to easily purchase a home w/a very low interest rate. Sure it was $600 but it saved me all the time and hassel of trying to figure it out on my own. And they did it very quickly. But I was told by my mortgage broker and the credit place not to pay old stuff cuz that goes on your credit too and most places don't look at the details they just look at your score. And paying things, believe it or not, brings down your score I was told. Im no expert but that's what I was told! Maybe you could call around and see if you can get a cheaper rate to do this. Businesses are competitive these days.

By the way the company I used did not negotiate to make arrangements to pay things off, they sent letters to the places that had reported on my credit and after two to three attempts were able to just get them removed. If they are old...they'll just get them removed. Its not like I paid them to make arrangement to then pay off my debts, it didn't work like that. Ask HMS what they will actually be doing for you specifically.

No experience with them. No issues with credit BUT...

Don't pay someone to do what you can do yourself.

They are in this to make money. You can call your creditors, negotiate and make payment plans, etc. That is exactly what HMS or any other business will do.

Contact the top 3 reporting agencies, then contact the people you owe and start negotiating.

The same gimmick happens every year when you get your tax notification from the city. Businesses contact you and for a fee they will go get an adjustment made on your taxes. This is another something that you can do yourself and save the $$.

If you don't know where to start, etc, then contact the FREE help from the local government and go from there.
