I gave up Lent for Lent years ago and never looked back.
Works well for New Year's Resolutions too.
It's Fat Tuesday! Or as my parents used to say, the day before Ash Wednesday. :)
I am committed to daylight fasting this year. I am now eating raw cookie dough in preparation, lol. If you observe lent and are choosing to give up something (or some other type of observance), what will it be? Just curious. :)
I love hearing what people do to observe lent. And I hadn't heard of 40 Bags in 40 Days, I really like that idea of ridding your life of material junk. A good friend of mine is giving up spending outside of necessary goods, and I thought that was a great challenge.
I don't really agree with the idea that there is a proper way to observe lent, because to me any personal sacrifice could be a step in the direction towards spiritual development. JMO :)

Well, I already don't eat any grains or sugars, other than fruit, so it's hard to choose something else to give up…..
I'm giving up sloth - I'm not good about exercising every day.
Last year, my friend gave up a trash bag of clutter every day. It was awesome.
I will give up shopping for lent, and only buy things that I absolutely need and can not do without.
Great question. I might do the 40 bags in 40 days challenge. I am also starting a new nutritional program so tying it with Lent will be a nice way to increase my accountability and make anything I struggle with be a positive, spiritual experience. I'm making it about appreciating and nurturing the body and mind that God gave me, instead of neglecting and abusing them.
I am a practicing Catholic and a Eucharistic Minister who will have the privilege of administering the ashed tomorrow. :)
This Lent I am going to give up fast food which isn't really giving up much for me because we only eat fast food about once a week, but still, it seems like a good thing to give up. I'm also going to take on drinking more water. I don't drink enough of anything and am often somewhat dehydrated. I need to drink more water and am hoping Lent will help me do that. I'm also going to make a point of calling my lonely relatives more often.
I am taking Lent really seriously this year. I am giving up somethings so that I have more time with my family, kids and prayer life. I am giving up ALL unessential technology! There I said it! No Facebook, no pinterest, no mamapedia (sorry), no checking blogs, no candy crush, no solitaire. Only technology use for my job. This will give me more time to focus on prayers and scripture. I am also planning on reading "Tattoos on the Heart" and Dynamic Catholic daily. My husband and I are also going to work through the 40 days from "Fireproof". Its a lot, but I think it is necessary for my life right now. Good luck to all and hoping I can stay on track and become a better mom and wife!
When I was a practicing Catholic, I gave up different things each year.
I recall giving up, sodas, chocolate, potato chips, candy.. Obviously I was a child. It was super tough.
Great question! Instead of giving something up this year, I am going to do something each day to strengthen and repair the relationships with certain family members. I'm hoping that by the end of the 40 days I will feel more at peace with my family, and will maybe be more of a blessing to them. I need to start making a list of the things to do!! Love the raw cookie dough prep- awesome!
I am an athiest but I was raised in a very religious household and feel the Lenting is good for my self discipline. I am giving up caffeine.
I had stopped going to church a few years ago, so last Lent, I decided to commit to going every week, which I still am doing.
This year I am giving up Candy Crush. It keeps my nose in my phone for too many hours and I could probably do something more productive with my time.
I'm still on the fence, and time is running out. So I'm really glad you asked this question.
I am going to be much more serious about walking each and every day. I know I need to do it, and I'm hoping to push myself so that I can begin adding other exercises. But this is a start.
I've been thinking about making a couple of cd's of more religious music so that I can listen to that in the car instead of talk radio. I love talk radio, but it does tend to bring out the negative side in me. I'm hoping this will help me focus on the positive and really change my heart.
We do 2 things for lent. Number 1 is giving up something. I'm giving up sweet tea. This doesn't sound like a big deal but for me out is. Number 2 is to add something in. For my husband it is working the fish fry with the knights of Columbus. For me it's too do the soup for the soul project at church for the six weeks of lent.

I usually give up coffee (!) but I still let myself have tea.
We are Orthodox and we are all encouraged to give up animal products, all of them, during lent. So, that's what we do. We were already supposed to give up meat starting yesterday (but have one more week for dairy) but I forgot when I went shopping last week so now I'm binging on all my meat this week and starting next week! :)
Plus, of course, we are supposed to add in more prayer and more good deeds for others. So I'm going to try and get my kids involved in this one since I don't require them to strict fast food at their age.
I gave up self-deprivation.
i'm not christian and don't celebrate lent, but a few years ago found a really good groove with periodic religious fasting. the discipline and clarity it gave me was really enlightening.
until i let it slip.
i found these answers very interesting. you guys inspire me to dig in and get back to it.
