Hi Moms! I have two beautiful children. A boy and girl and as of now do not plan on having anymore. Although I might change my mind down the road. I want a long term birth control that I don't have to worry about taking daily. Does anyone use an IUD? I can't think of the new one off the top of my head. I think its Mirena?? If so..what is the cost and what are the side effects. Also... do you or your husband feel it in you? I am a little worried about that and losing the string! Any info anyone has would be great! If you'd like you can send me a personal e-mail too! Thanks!
C. :)
Just wanted to Thank everyone for their input! I will have to ask my OB about both Mirena and Paraguard. I don't go until Jan. so I will update then on which..if any I chose!

I have a mirena (since December) and I love it, because my periods were getting unbearably painful. Now they are super-light and I never have to take a pain pill - after years of taking 800 milligrams of motrin.
I couldn't tolerate the pill - I got something like morning sickness - and I haven't had that with mirena at all. But I did gain some weight and I think it might be related.
If it wasn't for the painful periods, I probably would have gone with the copper IUD just to avoid the hormones. But I'm happy with it. I've never noticed the string at all, and I just asked my husband and he says he hasn't either.
Well i got the mirena iud in june of this year. Well since i have gotten it i have had my period for a month straight. They say that it is normal to have abnormal periods or prolonged ones.it did not hurt at all and i can't even tell it is inside of me.my boyfriend said at first he could feel it but he dosen't anymore. Well if you have any other questions i can try to help answer them. I think overall it has its ups and downs.
I just saw your request about IUDs. I know I'm responding way late, and I hope I don't offend you. I just wanted to make sure you knew IUDs prevent implementation from occuring after the egg is fertilized. Some people don't realize how they work, and would have moral issues if they realized. So if you are pro-life and believe that life starts at conception, you may wabt to find an alternative approach.
HI,
I am using an IUD. Getting it was not fun ( meaning the procedure itself) but I'm very happy with it now. For abuot 6 months my periods were heavy and a little painfull, but now they are normal and the pain is gone. I can't feel it ang my husband does not feel it. I've had it for a year and a half .
Hi C.!
I have an IUD - the copper one (paragard). The one you asked about is the minera and it gives off a hormone similar to birth control pills (I think!). I chose the paragard because I did not want any hormones.
I have had mine since October of last year. I too was worried about the string and whether I would feel it or not. I thought I felt it about a month after it was put in and felt a little "claustrophobic" for a couple of days, but that was it. As for the string, its there but you actually have to reach for it to check it, but its fairly easy and once you know where it is, you only have to check it once a month. I have always been able to feel it. My husband did say that he thought he could feel it at first, but not anymore.
The paragard is good for 10 years and I am pretty sure the minera is good for 5.
We too have 2 kids and I have no idea if we will have more. But I love the idea of having birth control that I don't have to think about or worry about the hormones that it gives off.
My insurance covered mine 100%.
Best of luck with your decision! Feel free to email me if you want to ask anything else! :-)

I had Mirena for about 5 days and had it taken out. I cannot take birth control pills because the hormones would make me breakout and gain a ton of weight. I didn't experience anything while on Mirena. So, the hormone part didn't seem to phase me at all, and I am sensitive to that. What made me have it taken out was the string. It is like a fishing line, and I could feel it poking me all the time. I went in 3 different times to have it checked and have the string shortened. My ob cut the string as far back as it could go. But, it was still poking me. My ob could see where it was poking me because I was all raw and very tender there. So, it didn't work for me. But, my ob said he has done hundreds of IUD's and has never experienced the woman feeling the string. Some guys do, but not the women. So, it may work for you. I think it costs about $400 for the insertion fee from your doctor and IUD itself. My insurance covered it though, so you should check before it is done.
I got the Mirena in the beginning of July (so I have had it about a month) and I havent really had any problems with it. The insertion is a bit uncomfortable, but if you have 2 kids already..trust me, u will be fine :) I had spotting at first, and then I got my regular period, and I still have had spotting for like 2 weeks after. The doc said this could be normal up to 6 months after insertion. I am just gonna wait it out and see how it goes. I love not having to worry about birth control ( i get pregnant if my boyfriend hugs me haha) I havent had any weight gain, and my period was really light, and i am usually heavy. Hope that helps.
