IUD Recommendation

I will be going in this week for my 6 week post partum visit, and my midwife told me she could put in an IUD at this time. We have 2 kids, and my husband and I are pretty sure we are done, but I just am not ready to do anything permanent yet. I am exclusively breastfeeding my 5 week old. When I breastfed my first baby I went on the mini-pill and hated how it made me feel. My question is for those that have or have had an IUD, what has been your experience? My midwife told me there is Mirena, or one that uses copper instead of hormones? Which one did you use and did you like it or not?

I opted for Mirena. I personally have had no issues on it. I don't feel moody or otherwise when my period comes around. I have a very light and short cycle which is nice. No issues so far. I like it. Good luck.

I have the Paragard. Like it because it is hormone free, but don't like the longer periods. I would suggest an IUD though, because it is soooo nice not having to remember a pill, but also not have the finality of a tubal.

I've had my Mirena for almost 3 years. I love that I don't have to worry about taking the pill anymore, which I was forgetting all of the time!

For me, my periods are very sporadic...mostly very, very light. A few times, it's been heavier. I also have some random mild cramping. Sometimes I'll have some spotting every few weeks, other times it's longer than that. I think I'm currently almost 2 months since I've had anything at all.

Nothing else...no mood changes, making me feel crummy or weight gain. Just the randomness of the spotting. I have no idea when my true cycle is!

I have 2 children and am pretty sure I'm done. But my plan is to leave it in for the 5 years, then it's going to be my husband's turn! And then we'll be done for sure!

Good luck!

I have had the Mirena for 2 years.. had it put in over 2 months after my daughter was born.. I think the hormones are affecting me, specifically my mood. I have read about other women on this website saying that they have had the same problem related to the Mirena.
Periods are very light and practically nonexistent.. however I had frequent spotting for a while which is common. I'm thinking of maybe switching to a copper iud.

i have never personally had a iud. but right after my husband and i started being intimate i went on the deproveria?sp shot. every 3 months go in get a shot in the hip/butt check area and done. no periods, no cramping. then when you think you are ready for kids you don't go back to get the next shot. it can take awhile to become pregnant after going off the shot. for me the first time it happened after 6 months(accident) second time it took a little over a yr. but i enjoyed the NO period and not having to remember to take a pill every day. i can remember to give my oldest pills every day but i cann't remember to take them myself. best of luck with your choice. i actually had my tubes fixed in 2008 after my second was born.

I am on my 2nd Mirena... Had the first one for 5 years (inserted about 12-13 weeks post partum) and then had it removed and a new one inserted. LOVE IT!!! I talked to my doctor about the copper one just because it was 10 years versus 5, but she was not in favor of it. I don't get my period anymore, or if i do, it is very occasionally and very light. She said with the copper one you still get your period and it is extremely heavy. I opted for another Mirena and love it! Would recommend it to everybody!

I've had the copper previously and have the Mirena now. I much prefer the Mirena. The copper one gave me very heavy periods and extremely painful cramps. I have IBS, which probably had an effect on the cramping also. The Mirena was more painful to put in than I expected (maybe also in part b/c of my IBS), but has been great ever since. I don't get real periods, just a little bit of spotting. I couldn't use the pill or patch because the hormones gave me horrible headaches, but I've had no problems with the hormones in the Mirena. They are very localized.

I have had the mirena 2 times! I LOVED IT! I had it put in after my 2nd child and had it for about 2.5 years. It was great. No problems, no periods (which I loved). My husband would complain once in awhile because he could feel the string poke him lol... It did not infere with nursing or sex drive. I had it taken out on April 16th to try to have another and ended up pregnant on April 19th. So, 3 days. After my 3rd, I had another Mirena put in. Had it for a few months, Again, no problems, no periods. My husband got a vasectomy though so it was no longer needed.
Hope this helps :)

I went hormone free in 2000 with a copper iud. Loved it. I like no fake hormones. Got it out for baby 2 in 2008 and will get another one when we get baby 3 or decide that the door is truly shut for that

After my first child I got the copper one put in and disliked it with a passion. I had tons and tons of bleeding and some minor cramping. I ended getting it taken out early because I just didn't feel the greatest. I will be trying the Mirena one here in the next couple weeks.

I LOVE my Mirena. I have had it for 3.5 years. I had a bit of mild cramping when I first had it in. I have not had a period since getting it. I also just spoke with my gynocologist and WILL be getting it again when its 5 years are up. I have recommended it so many times.

i had the mirena put in 6 weeks after my second daughter was born. i cannot explain the pain i felt when it was inserted. it felt like she grabbed ahold of my uterus and tried yanking it out of my body. over the next two years, i had pain from it. it got really bad-to the point of dropping me to the floor sometimes. i had my period 1-3 times a month. after two years, i decided i had had enough. i went in to have it removed and they couldn't find the string. they did an ultrasound and couldn't find it. then they did a cat scan and found it behind my uterus on the left side (where i was feeling all of the pain) i had to have surgery to have it removed. DO NOT get an IUD!!!!! there are better, safe ways to prevent pregnancy. i knew the risks when i had it inserted but i thought oh what are the chances? that won't happen to me. well it did. now i have medical bills i have to pay. i do not have any more pain and lucky for me, i have no damage to my uterus. i now take the yaz pill and love it!! i do not have any pms or crabbiness when i have my period. please do not take the risk. you might get it and be fine, but you might get it and experience what i had to go through.

I had the Mirena for 2 years. Just got it taken out..felt pregnant, sensitivity to salt..breast pain and enlargement and bleeding for what felt like 3 weeks. Now that I got it taken out.I remember why I got it in the first place. My mood swings and periods are unbearable. Looking back..I probably shouldve just left it in. Everyone's different. Good luck.

I've had the copper IUD for almost two years. My periods are heavier than before and I have had some occasional cramping but I do love that there are no homones in it! Also, I previously had the depo shot. That was ok, a little annoying to have to go to the doc every three months -- and if you go like one day late you have to take a pg test to make sure before they'll give you the shot. Everyone I know who's been on the depo, including myself, has gained excessive amount of weight so be cautious of that. I was on it for a year or two (long time ago, hard to remember) and I gained about 50 pounds or so. I wouldn't personally recommend that as an option. the IUD is great though! good luck with your decision!

I have the Paragard IUD. I chose it because there are no hormones and it lasts up to 10 yrs. But when they say that you will have heavier periods... they are not kidding. For about a year I had periods that were very heavy. It is finally leveling out now. I do love that I have no hormones and don't have to take a pill everyday.
