I have had an IUD in for little over four years without any periods what so ever outside of the spotting when first getting it done, all of a sudden out of nowhere i have a period with very heavy bleeding and i am a little concerned as to why this is. If anyone can help answer my question i would greatly appreciate it thank you.

What can I do next?

Bleeding like that should be checked by the doctor so please get it to see one soon.

Since you haven't had periods... that probably means you have a Hormone IUD (mirena)?

If so... then

1) They're only good for a max of 5 years
2) Sounds like yours is running out a little early and it's time to replace it

Use backup birthcontrol until you get the okay &/or a new one.

____

Copper IUDs (paragard) with no hormones don't TYPICALLY affect your period, because there are no hormones. However, some people who have extremely light periods to begin with might 'lose' their period when they quit taking hormone birth control. If you have a COPPER IUD... they're good for 10 years, and they never "run out" of hormones (because they don't have hormones). Meaning be seen IMMEDIATELY if you have a copper iud, instead of a hormonal one.

Call your OB pronto! It's probably nothing serious, but tell the office everything you are experiencing. Also, just to be safe, wear pads instead of tampons.

I wonder if it could be a polyp? Definitely see your Dr as soon as possible.

I have also had my Mirena IUD for 4+ years without periods - a few months ago they came back. My IUD is up for removal in December of this year. I went in for my annual and because I was concerned - my doctor said that it is pretty common to see more periods as the IUD reaches the end of it's life. She actually suggested maybe replacing it a little earlier if I continue to have issues.

I think it's good to get it checked out, but really it is no reason to panic - seems to be pretty normal.
Good luck.
