I am considering having an IUD. I am not sure if I want to get the Mirena or the copper type. I was wondering what your opinion is on either / both.

Thanks ladies!

I have the mirena and love it! There's good and bad things about it. My periods are irregular, but light. It is something I would recommend to anyone cause it's been really great for me. Low dose of hormones and maintenance free for 5 years. Also it is extremely effective in preventing pregnancy which was an issue for me cause I seem to be very fertile.
Good luck! It's something you have to weigh the pros and cons about, but there are a lot of choices out there.

My OB has used the copper herself and highly suggests it. I am unable to use contraceptives that contain hormones because I have a blood clotting issue. I have heard horror stories about the mirena causing emotional issues and hair loss because of the hormones it contains.

We are currently trying for #2, so I have not opted for the IUD yet. I would select the copper though.

I recently got the copper IUD -Paragard, I went with this one b/c it's effective immidiatley after placement, & as soon as it's removed it's possible to get pregnant right away, It lasts for 10 years otherwise, & you can have them both while still nursing. I have had no problems & I also know friends that have Mirena that have had no problems. My opinion is the one I have was a great choice for me & have been very happy with it. I'd go with whatever fits your needs the best. Good Luck.

I have the Mirena and love it. It was uncomfortable not painful to have it placed. The most uncomfortable part for me was the cramping afterwards. I would highly recommend it.

I like my Mirena. I've had it since April '08. It hurts to have it "installed" but the pain lasts only moments. I have had only one period since then and it was only light spotting for a couple of days. Love it -- No problems so far!

Hi J.,

I also have a Mirena. I love it. No more periods or if so very very light. Plus no worrying about taking a pill. Before have my daughter, I don't think I ever forgot to take a pill. I was very very careful, but after having my daughter I think I forget things more often. So the Mirena was prefect for me. Now I don't even think about missing a pill. Hope this helps. Oh, and it didn't hurt at all.

Hey J.,

I have had the mirena coming on 5 years and am fixing to get another, I have had only one period since I got it put in & I Love It!! Now I did try the copper one right after my daughter was born and I had lots of cramps & heavy bleeding during & in between my periods, so I had it taken out. In the end it's up to you & which one will work better with your body. Good Luck!!

I've had Mirena for a year, and I love it! I've never had any kind of problems with it. It barely pinched when the doctor inserted it. I had some spotting off/on for about a month after it was inserted, but I have had no period since. I got it about 6 weeks after my son was born. It's wonderful to not have to think about birth control (not to mention not having a period!), b/c I am horrible at remembering to take a pill everyday.

I also have the Mirena...I've had it for almost 2 years now. I have intermittent periods, but when I do have them they're very light. Insertion was a total nonevent - no pain, no cramping. I've had a great experience.
