Hello! I'm hoping to surprise my hubby with a trip somewhere special! We've never been to Italy before and I thought it might be a nice place to celebrate our 10th anniversary! If we go, it would be for about one week. What part of Italy would you suggest? What hotel have you stayed at? Please share!

Thanks!

We love Tuscany! We were there a few years ago and stayed at a couple bed & breakfasts. I would definitely recommend those over a hotel -- much more intimate and quiet. And they're usually surrounded by vineyards or olive orchards. I don't have specific recommendations but with the internet, it's not too hard to find them.

Have fun!

Venice! I absolutely loved it. Some people think its dirty, but its one of my favorite places and I have been twice. You only need a night or 2 but its well worth it! I want to go for our 10 year also, we went for our honeymoon almost 6 years ago now. We got the travel books and planned things to do-Rick Steves and Frommers are great!

My husband I went for our 20th Anniversary. It was partly a work trip, but we couldn't ask for anything except “additional” time. Our favorite was Verona at the Grand Hotel. It was beautiful with wonderful people who went out of their way to assist us with all of our needs. Because it was a work trip I didn't have time to prepare places to eat or visit or learn Italian. Even without all of the preparations, just the culture and walking around the beautiful city all of the food was delicious and next to the coliseum. We even were able to figure out the trains and take a day trip to Venice and enjoy a gondola ride and a beautiful lunch (Although, I would stay longer). Another must see if you have a car is San Marino; it was another day trip when we stayed in Lugo, Italy at a family style hotel. It was charming and quaint with oversized rooms and wonderful staff. I would love to go back to see more of the sites and explore the wonderful architecture. I sincerely hope you get the chance to experience this with your spouse.

Cindy is right. What are your interests?

Outdoors. Wine. Scenic vistas. Beach/water. Food. Art. Architecture. Fashion.

Your interests could very well dictate where you go. My suggestion, don't stay in more than two places in a week.

(Food/wine - piedmont. Wine/scenic vistas - Tuscany. Art - Florence. Cool City - Venice. Architecture/history/food/people - Rome. Fashion - Milan. Coast towns/hiking - Cinque Terre. etc. and so on...)

We stayed in Rome for 10 days and it was incredible! So much rich history and fun things to do during the day and SUPER romantic at night with all the candlelit dinner, walks on cobblestone streets past accordian players, gelato and espresso for dessert in the piazza next to the fountains... Ahhh, I wanna go with my man right now! :) We rented an apartment online near Piazza Navona for a week which was charming, cheaper than a hotel, had a lovely rooftop terrace to relax on, and was totally central to all the good stuff! Have fun!!!

Good choice! Italy (my homecountry) is very diverse, it's got big cities and countryside little towns, beaches and mountains. If you like art then, by all means choose the "tourist route" Venice-Florence-Rome, the "can't miss" towns which will be more than enough for a week (although I recommend 10 days). They are easy to plan for since you can surely find a guide in the USA before hand.Go either in May or in October (best for weather and temperature).
If you are looking for a more seclusive, romantic, relaxed time then I would recommend Capri or the Riviera Ligure (up north towards France - Portofino, Monterosso, Vernazza etc..). I have soo many more places to recommend (oh my gosh Naples, Tuscany, Sicily and the Lipari Islands, Puglia etc...they are ALL unbelievable), so if you have an idea on what you'd like to do, pm me, I'll be glad to help.

Italy has a lot of wonderful areas. It's hard to choose/limit it so it depends on what you like and are looking for. Venice can be very romantic. Florence has wonderful art. Rome has the Vatican and the Coliseum, among many other things, but it's a HUGE city. The Italian Riveria is beautiful too. The food is wonderful wherever you go! I have no hotel recommendations since I was there a long time ago as a poor graduate student. Enjoy. Oh, there are some economic and political issues going on there right now. I think travel is still encouraged, but you might want to look into that too before you finalize any plans.

I don't love Rome and been there several times in attempt to appreciate it, but I love Venice & Florence.

Lugano is amazing but I felt like it was more Swiss than traditionally thought of "Italian."

Capri is very touristy and expensive but gorgeous. Pompeii is something to see.

But, next time I go back, I would love to rent a house on either the Amalfi Coast or Tuscany and just be. I would eat and drink at a slow pace and soak in what is there. See a church if I want to... maybe, but really just being in a slower, food driven culture is where its at for me: )
