My 13 year old daughter is obsessed with my little pony and is asking for the DVDs. She also loves to google them and draw them. I am finding it strange that my daughter who insists she is not a little kid any more is obsessed with a thing for little kids. She also is obsessed with pokemon if that helps. Any advice?

What can I do next?

Well at least it won't get her pregnant!

It's a cute pony toy/show with happy stories. No problem.

ETA: I realize that whether something will "get her pregnant" is not the main standard, lol! I just meant - it is a nice show with imagination and creative characters...if that is her biggest "vice" at 13, I think you do not need to be worried! :-)

I know a 30 year old lady who is obsessed with Hello Kitty. My almost 13 year old is totally obsessed with ALL stuffed animals. Maybe they will grow out of it, maybe they will not. At least they are obsessed with things that are not to grown up for them!

Some kids go through a little regression when they are having a hard time growing up. I think it's pretty harmless. If she wants to draw them, it sounds like good practice for art class...don't over-think all of this.

sounds ok.. maybe a bit immature.. but I would rather have that than a 13 year old that is wearing tons of makeup and making out with high school boys..

really this is not a big problem... things could be worse..

I'm a teen librarian, and the My Little Pony series called Friendship is Magic is a huge thing with that age group right now. I ordered a bunch of books for the non-fiction collection at the library, and the cataloging department had to call me up to double check that I meant to order kids books for the teen collection! And these books have been checked out of our library non-stop. Pokemon is also still big, even with kids that age.

Umm...

I kinda like it myself...

Don't judge me!!! Lol.

The new MLP is a lot different than the version that played when I was a kid. It actually has nuances to be picked up and enjoyed by an older audience, that are still appropriate.

I have a high acheiving, responsible, athletic, mature eleven year old who still plays with barbies and does her dolls hair. She is secure enough not to be concerned with trying to act grown up. She likes what she likes and doesn't care if some kids may think it's babyish.

Be happy your girl isn't growing up too quickly. I'll take My Little Pony over booty shorts any day of the week.

My 11 year old is also obsessed. She's always liked it, but last year, it resurfaced as a passion. But then again, so is my 19 year old nephew (he's a "bronie," which I find far more odd). There are a lot of adults who like it, too. I look at it this way - I'd really rather she be into that than what all her friends are into - boys, texting, instagram, etc.

Normal. Many older children enjoy and are attached to things meant for a younger age. I wouldn't be concerned. There are a lot worse things she could be doing in her spare time.

My Little Pony has had a bit of a resurgence among the "tweens". It's quite popular for boys that age to be fans, too, my #3 son (age 13) is one and calls himself a "Brony". My daughter (age 11) even has a shirt that says "Come at me Brony!" from Hot Topic that's quite silly.

So, yeah, this is normal :)

It is a pop culture thing among older kids/teens/young adults. It is entirely normal. I would not worry about it. My college-educated, adult SS plays Yu Gi Oh (kind of a retro thing).

why, is there some big dividing line in which teenagers have to stop liking the things they loved when they were 'little kids'?
i don't ever remember NOT being obsessed with horses.
for that matter, really liking something and wanting to draw and read about it isn't 'obsession', it's called having favorite things. teens are prone to that.

Yep normal. Not that it wouldn't ne normal in any case but especially MLP is targeted at both: little girls and teens/adults.
The series producers are actually including little references here and there that are directed to a teen/adult audience (Dr. Hooves anyone?). Hasbro has also started to sell merchandise that is aimed at the pegasisters and bronies, as the teen/adult fans of MLP are called.
And then there is the new spin-off: Equestria Girls... in which the ponies morph into teenage girls...

I think it is normal as well. For my daughter (she is 11) it is pet shops. OMG she has sooooo many.
It is actually refreshing to hear this.
When I was 14 I still played with barbies.
Kids are growing up way to fast.
Many Blessings

I think it is more or less normal. When I was in college for some reason (I'm embarrassed to admit this) we all had a fixation on the Little Mermaid.

Ironically I was just reading a blog today that was written by a 21 year old college student about the fixation that young adults have on My Little Pony and the sometimes almost pornographic art and writing that some of them produce. If she is looking for My Little Pony things on line really watch what she is coming across. Some of it that I found by accident was really disturbing!

Normal!!! My 12 year old daughter also likes My Little Pony and Pokemon. She loved these things when she was in kindergarten and first grade, then they disappeared. They have resurfaced over the last year. I think it's a pop culture thing. My daughter doesn't really play with them, but she likes to draw them (she draws ALL the time) and watch little videos with them. She just bought a t-shirt at Five Below with the ponies on it. So, I'm not worried about it. Yet :)

Yes, very normal! Your DD is at the age where she wants to be a big girl but also wants to be a little girl too. I went through this with my DD who is now 16. Her mind is thinking "i am a big girl" but her heart is saying "i still like barbie dolls".... she will grow out of it soon! Give it time!
Just be glad that she is not wanting high heels, shorts skirts, make-up or a push up bra! I know way to many of those girls!

There are actually some teenage boys obsessed with My Little Pony, they call themselves "Bronies"... If you ever watch the current cartoon, its actually quite tween-ish, they act all sassy and teenager-y and there is this whole mythical element to it that appeals to that age. Magic, evil ponies, etc.
Some people are just more "obsessive" than others-they get really into something for a period of time until they burn it out, and start a new obsession. This could just be your daughters personality.

My 12 y.o. has a pokemon obsession. I'm okay with that - it gives her and her 9 y.o. brother something to share in common.

Don't be in too much of a hurry for your little girl to grow up. Kids this age still have one foot in childhood. It's completely normal. I've had high school students who proudly carried Hello Kitty lunchboxes.

yes, surprisingly
luckily my just turned 14 yr old daughter is only obsessed with Iron Man... and other DC oh, wait, is it Marvel?, characters. She just redid her room this summer with a comic hero theme. I tell her it's the perfect little boys room. But she just read this and said, "she's a little weird" LOL

oh and my daughter has 120 rubber ducks in her collection... yeah...

The whole Bronie thing is so WEIRD!!! I had never heard of it until I was listening to Howard Stern one morning and they were interviewing Bronies and making fun of them!

As for your daughter and her ponies, no worries. She'll be on to less juvenile things soon. Be happy that she is still a little girl and not trying to act 18!
