Is There Something Wrong with Me? - Goodyear,AZ

I'm allergic to most medications. Prescription and over the counter. My mom was thinking that this is some sort of immune disorder but I can't find anything about it. It's easier to tell doctors what medications I can have rather than what I can't. I have real severe reactions, chest pain, difficulty breathing, swollen tongue and lips, hives, itching, nausea, seizures etc. I will also feel all over sick like i'm being poisoned. I have to take thyroid medicine and I'm allergic to Synthroid, levithroid and now I'm reaction to Armour Thyroid. I tried natural stuff but it's either not strong enough for me or with the strong stuff, I'm allergic to also. The only pain meds I can take is tylenol and Morphine. Morphine makes me itch real bad but that's it so I end up taking that for surgeries. Doctors have recommended me going to an allergy specialist to find out what I can take but I already know I can't take anything. Even if I'm not allergic to it, I will become allergic to it eventually. I always do!! As far as natural stuff, I'm only allergic to herbs I got for my thyroid from the chiropractor and I'm allergic to the generic brand of "Airborne." Otherwise, I don't react to natural remedies but it's hard to find stuff strong enough to support my thyroid or to help with pain if I need it. Obviously, I don't take much as far as medications... Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

My thought is that you are allergic not to each medication but rather to something thru have in common, for example an inactive ingredient like a filler or a dye. I would ask the pharmacist to brainstorm some possibilities. Is it just pills? Have you had reactions to creams or IV medications?

My thought was that there is some inert, inactive ingredient, or ingredients, in the medications, like artificial coloring or something else, that they would all have in common and maybe that is what you are actually reacting to. I would take your doctors advice and follow through with the allergy specialist.

I'm allergic to chemical preservatives in food, and they use the same stuff in most medicines. Do you find yourself reacting to processed foods, too? Or maybe you eat healthier than I did and haven't been able to make a connection. I can't have anything with phosphate, sorbate or benzoate on the label. It's hard to find meds without at least one of these ingredients. If you are allergic to an additive in the medication, you may be able to find a pharmacist who is licensed to make prescriptions from scratch. I think they are called "compounding pharmacies". They can mix up the drug you need with fillers that are safe for you.

Since the allopathic medical model isn't doing much for you, you might want to consider seeing an alternative practitioner or two. Many of my friends get good results, slower but gentler, through naturopathic medicine. I get noticable help with pain issues through acupuncture. Good luck.

I would see an allegist. Even if you know you are already allergic to everything. Seems to me like this is something that should have been looked into further a long time ago. Although, I don't know much about allergies, only the seasonal kind.

I would visit an allergist/immunologist. They can run tests to see if you might be allergic to certain dyes, additives, etc. like others have mentioned. They can also run tests to see if you do indeed have some type of immunologic disorder. I think this is your best bet so you can have medical guidance in this. Good luck to you! I hope they can figure out what causes all of these medication reactions.

I agree. My mom recently developed certain food allergies to the point where she needs to avoid gluten. Because of that, I have found out that many medications contain gluten. Maybe you're severely allergic to that or something else or a combination.

It sounds to me like your Liver is not working properly. I would check into some homeopathic liver cleanse supplements. check http://www.mynaturalmarket.com and vitacost.com to find them online. They are usually less expensive this way. I assume you have a diagnosis from an endocrinologist because of your thyroid problems, but because the liver isn't part of the endocrine system, if there is a problem with it, they wouldn't have caught it. The liver dysfunction could also be the cause of weight gain or lack of the ability to loose unwanted fat. If it isn't processing things correctly, these things could appear to be caused by a sluggish thyroid.

Sounds like something is wrong, I would keep going to the doctor until they have tested you to make sure you are getting the right medications and treatments. Too much is going on with you to experiment without being under licensed medical care.

Blessings.....

I am allergic to alot of meds also. most anitbiotics, pain med, even pepto bismo. someone mentioned to me that it could be something used to make the pills rather than the medicine itself. i recently had to have surgery and the antibiotic they normally give i am allergic to. they gave it to me while under in an iv form and i was fine. you may want to go to an allergist and get tested to see if it is a true med allergy. i am.

Maybe an allergist can help find out what exactly you're allergic too and what is safe for you. I'm allergic to Airborne because it has Echinacea and many people who are allergic to walnuts are allergic to Echinacea.....So there are patterns and if you are exposing yourself daily to things that you are allergic to, my understanding is the sensitivity grows. Might be a good idea to get help to control it so you can reverse this in your body so it isn't fighting (immune system aroused) all the time.
