Is There a Wax or Lacquer for Slides?

We just purchased (second-hand) some play equipment for our daughters to play on in the back yard. The little ones favorite part of playgrounds are slides. I am so disappointed!!! It seems like the slide has been somehow dulled, or sanded down. My kids have to scoot their way down it. They cant slide at all!!! Does anyone know of something I can put on it to make it more slick? For instance wax, lacquer, or varnish for fiberglass/plastic. Please help... disappointed Mama and kids :-(

What can I do next?

Silicone spray!!!!! It is the best. I used that, after my son fell head first off a slide because his shoes stuck at the top....Silicone spray stopped that from happening, and doesn't need re-applying very often.

I remember when I was a kid, we would use wax paper to go down the slide. We would just sit on a big piece of it and it was like going down a water slide. It also seemed to help lubricate the slide.

Sure is and you probably already have it in you kitchen! Give them each a piece of wax paper and have them sit on it when they go down the slide. After sliding a couple time each with the wax paper under their bottoms they won't need it anymore. Be sure to keep an eye on the little one because the slide might get to slick. I remember my brother and i use to beg our parents for wax paper so we could slide faster. I bought my son a toddler slide for $2 at a thrift store, rubbed it down with wax paper myself and it was just like new!

You didn't say if the slide is metal or plastic but we used to use car wax on ours...the more coats the better...but it was metal. I've heard it works with the plastic ones when they are fairly new...but haven't tried...some people say to use plain wax like on a surf board...Try calling the manufacturer or a toy store like Toys R Us for suggestions. Happy Sliding!!

You might try Future Floor Wax. It's liquid and you can apply it thinly with a sponge. It's some kind of acrylic and it dries hard and shiny. If you want to remove it just use ammonia diluted with water. If there is a greener alternative by all means use it, but I used Future for a couple of projects years ago and I thought it was pretty neat. Good luck!

You did not mention what material the slide is made of, but my mother always rubbed oatmeal on our metal slides to make them faster.

It is a lot of fun for kids to get a square piece of waxed paper (from the kitchen) to sit on when they slide down the slide. My kids have done this as well as students. It's agood time. Enjoy!

Armor All (for your car) works great! It also gives new life and shine to the equipment. Good luck!

Another option might be surfboard or ski wax. You should be able to find it at any sporting goods store. I'd go really lightly on it at first so it doesn't get TOO slick.

They could sit on wax paper or a waxy produce box bottom.

Try fabric softner. I would just the sheets first and it that does not work use the liquid. I know that it works on shower doors to keep water marks from forming and it seems like it would work for anything you need slippery.
Good luck.

When we were kids, we used to slide down on a sheet of waxed paper when the slide wasn't fast enough.

I do not know of a laquer but I do know that wax paper will help. Buy wax paper at the grocery store. Tear off sheets about 12 inches. Have your girls sit on it to slide down the slide and in no time the slide will be fast again then you will not need the wax paper. Have fun!

As a quick fix, try having them slide down with wax paper under their bottoms.

beware, they will go very fast. After a few "swipes" the slide may become slick again. This is what we did in a preschool where I worked, and it was a great fix. A few kids would volunteer first thing in the morning in the playground, and the slide would be slick for everyone...

Take the wax paper advise, keep an eye on your kids and stay away from adding harmful chemicals to the slide!

When I was young we used wax paper on the metal slides at the park. (We'd sit on the paper and it made us *fly* down the slide.)

My nephew has used surfboard wax to achieve the same goal on his wooden slide.

When I was little we went to this park with a big concrete slide. We would use wax paper to slide down on. It worked well for that. good luck.
