Is My 15 Month Old Eating Too Much or Too Little?

I just wanted to know what other 15 month old eat and how much. I sometimes feel she eats a lot and I sometimes feel she eats too little. The thing that has me confused is the fact she is only about 19.5 lb and she is a little string bean but she will eat till shes full (or appears to be). What do you other moms think? Here is a sample menu for the day, morning snacks on dry cereal and milk till breakfast is made, BREAKFAST: is a full peice of french toast (minus crust), one egg, 1/4 cup or more of sliced pears, LUNCH: 1/2 TO 3/4 cup of pasta flavored with butter and cheese, 1/4 cup of peas, SNACK: cereal bar or 1/2 cup of fruit(sometimes both). DINNER: Full size grilled cheese sandwhich, 1/2 cup corn, DESSERT: 1/8 cup of yogurt and diced pear. Thats a pretty basic day, she is not a big fan of milk but I can usually get her to drink a cup and a half through out the day along with her water. Does this sound about right? Any advice is welcome, thanks.

What can I do next?

It sounds like she's a good eater. Talk to the ped. dr. if you are really worried. She may just have a fast metabolism. My nephew eats up a storm and is a walking stringbean.

My first child was a pipsqueak at that age and still is. She was 18 pounds at age 1. Now in kindergarten she is the second to smallest. It's just her make-up.

The barometer to go by is: is she gaining weight and inches each month? A few ounces and a few notches count.

You are doing fine with her menu. One thing you could try is Pedi-Sure. It's available in the baby food aisle. It is on the expensive side. I never used it, but do have a very close friend who has because her child had severe reflux and wasn't getting enough nutrients from her regular diet.

Hi R.,
It sounds like a great diet. I have a 16 month old boy. He's 27 pounds. He eats a banana and then a little later 2 eggs for breakfast, lunch is usually an 8 ounce yogurt and some strawberries or grapes, and dinner is whatever we are having. I give him a snack after nap and he grazes some through out the day. He loves rolls or bagels or teddy grahams. He probably goes in for a snack every few hours - I put his food on the bottom shelf of the frig and he will pick out what he wants (so funny).
Some days he eats a lot and others less. He also doesn't drink much milk. I got Elmo (of course) cups with straws that he does best with. He didn't do so well with the Avent cups and bottles are too slow. Sometimes I put a little Nesquik in his milk, which he enjoys. (Don't tell anyone)

Hi R.,

Great food choices! At this age, children are the most 'natural'. What I mean is that unlike us (and especially me!) their bodies will tell them when to stop. We (me!) will eat for a variety of reasons when were not truly hungry (i.e. 'its breakfast time', 'it tastes good', 'boredom', 'thirst', etc). Children your daughters age are good regulators and are the most in touch with their systems in terms of what they need to eat. Just let her be. As long as youre offering a varied diet (which it seems as you are) and healthy food options (lots of whole grains and fruits and veggies)then let her decide the hunger bit. CHildren at that age tend to eat in little bits and frequently. You will also notice that some days she'll eat a lot whilst others nothing at all. THats normal and healthy.

R. -- sounds to me like you are doing a GREAT job! Some kids are just smaller than others. I would worry about it if your pedi is worried, or if she is slipping percentiles. But I'd be surprised, given her appetite, if she is. Sounds like a lot of it is genetic, but you are feeding her a GREAT variety of good foods, and she is eating them! Good for you, Mommy!
