Is It Time to See the Dr. Possibly Tmi Question?

I used to be very regular with my period - every 28 days. Since having my dd 13 months ago my periods are coming earlier and earlier. I get one every 3 weeks now. They used to start light, then go heavy, then light and lasted 5 to 7 days. Now it starts heavy and like a waterfall and major cramps, which I never used to get. The only upside - they last 4 to 5 days now.

Is there reason to be concerned? Or is it my body just changing? Things are progressively getting worse, as in short time frame between periods, and heavier when they start. Also, I am not on any medications.

Thanks,

What can I do next?

Yes, Sam, it's time to go to the doctor. You want some blood work and an ultrasound. It's important to know if you have bleeding fibroids or polyps, or if you hormones are out of whack.

Go ahead and go. It'll make you feel better to get back on a regular schedule!

Please get it checked. I was getting uterine polyps and ended up having the lining of my uterus removed. (Not a D & C, I can't remember what the procedure is called). I still have the symptoms of a period but no bleeding, well maybe enough for a band-aid, lol.
It is probably nothing, but I wouldn’t wait.

Edit**I forgot to add that my periods before the surgery were extremely heavy. It was getting worse every month.

I never had cramps until I had kids, now they are pretty strong. I don't know how old you are (getting close to perimenopause?) but chances are there is nothing serious going on. Your body changes considerably after giving birth, especially if you breastfed. That's a lot of hormone changes and cycles can go weird.

If you did go to the doctor, they'd be able to examine you and make sure there's nothing wrong (cysts?) and probably suggest birth control pills to control the cycles better. Might as well go get examined, it'll be a relief to hear from a professional that it's normal.

I might give them a call, or at the very least bring it up at your next annual appointment. In my experience, a lot of things can fiddle with your period from age, change in weight, excercise, stopping breastfeeding, sleep patterns, number of children you've given birth to among a whole myriad of possibilities. My periods have actually changed very similarly to yours. I do know that the increase in cramps is because my uterus has been "used" so to speak so it has to work harder now to do its job.

sounds like your body is changing...however, since it's different...I would go to the OB and tell her what you told us....maybe they'll draw blood to check your hormone levels...

Personally - having them so close would bother me.
