Is It Normal... - Los Angeles,CA

My 23 month old will repeat the same word over and over even if I've acknowledged his comment and he throws in a sound like "mm" between each utterance.

Example: Our dog is nearby
Him: Della
Me: Yes that's Della
Him: Della. mm. Della. mm. Della. etc.

Example #2: Running a bath and its warm (he labels it hot)
Him: Hot
Me: No its not hot. Its warm (it really is, bordering on chilly)
Him: Hot. mm. Hot. mm. Hot. etc.

Example #3: At a restaurant and daddy walks to the bathroom
Him: Dada?
Me: Daddy went to go potty. He'll be right back.
Him: Pause. Dada?
Me: Daddy will be right back
Him: Dada?
etc.

Is this normal?? I have a sister who's OCD and a strong history of mental illnesses so I know I'm paranoid but I want to make sure this is normal behavior. Please let me know. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OK the general consensus seems to be that it's normal so I'm going to not worry about it. He's right on track in terms of how many words he speaks and how much he understands so I know there isn't a language delay...I was just worried about the repetition. Thank you!

My 2 year old does it. I just sort of assumed it was normal. I thought the little noise in between was just her processing it in her mind and repeating the word.

My kids didn't really do that, but then again it's hard to read from a forum without observing the environment. Doesn't seem ritualistic which would be indicative of OCD. That would be repeating the same words in the same way. So if it was always 'Della' or always 'Hot' and always at the same times. That would be something to get checked out. I wouldn't worry about this though, he is still very young.

My daughter is only 3 months so she's not talking yet. But my brothers, neices, nephews, they always repeated words over and over again and they are just fine.

But......there's always the pediatrician! Ask and see what the doctor thinks. Because I'm certainly no expert!

It's perfectly normal. My almost 21 month old son says dada over and over and about everything.....I wouldn't worry about it at all at this stage. Now when they are older and speaking fluently but will repeat one word over and over, I would then begin to get concerned. But at this stage, perfectly normal.

May want to get his hearing checked... just as a precaution.

To my experiences as a Mother, Nanny and Nurse - no, that doesn't exactly sounds normal but may still be within normal range.

My little girl was talking full run on sentences by 16 months - so that may be why my Motherly instincts say not exactly normal... but I am aware boys develop language and working vocabularies much later than girls.

Yes, I think so. Our 21 month old is saying Mommy over and over again. It refers to me or whenever he wants something. He just points to it and says mommy mommy mommy! Why? Becuase Mommy will get it for him. I think it's normal - at least it's normal in our house.

Your pedieatrician should ask you about language at his 2yo check up. Ask the Dr. then.

He's FINE!
They do this.
Repeating things, is how a kid learns.
It is also a way for them to 'organize' their thoughts etc. They will do this (when he is older), with objects/toys too... categorizing & grouping them and liking to do this. It is developmental based.

Yes, it's normal. My son is not quite there yet, but we just had a conversation with the pedi about talking, and expectations. He's learning, and repetition is part of that. It will get better as he learns more and masters language. That said, if your gut is telling you there is something that is definitely not normal with his behavior, bring it up with the pediatrician. They should be asking about his language development at his 2 yr checkup anyhow, so bring up your concerns and give examples like you did here. Then your pedi can evaluate and give you peace of mind.

My kids sometimes will just keep repeating the same thing until I either acknowledge them or they THINK I have heard them. Sometimes they don't even give me a chance to respond before doing it :). Or my 6 year old still has some trouble with some of his sounds and he will just keep repeating it until it sounds right. It's cute/annoying. i think it's normal, but if you're worried about it, go ahead and have him checked out :).

My son used to say "momma" for everything. He would say momma if he was hungry, if he wanted to play, if he wanted you to stop pushing him on the swing, if he was deciding what he wanted to eat. It drove my hubby crazy, but I thought it was kind of cute! He obviously has grown out of it being almost 5! ;)

It is normal for toddlers to repeat words as they are learning to talk--kind of like how an adult may repeat a phone number to remember it.
As long as his development is typical in other areas, it likely isn't a reason for concern. You could always mention your concerns at his next well child checkup if it still nagging at you.

my 3 yr old does that and he just got his ears clear enough to hear. they are learning new words mine said shoes for 4 hrs the other day. I was hoping he would say another new word but he was so excited with the one he did learn he had to make sure I knew he knew it. :) normal mom in my opinion.
